  1. Re:Am I alone? on American Anime Localization Company Tries Torrents · · Score: 2, Insightful

Off the top of my head, without even thinking:
Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Hellsing, Wolf's Rain, Crest of the Stars, Serial Experiments Lain

GitS has various exploding body parts. Bebop has drugs taken through eyeballs. Eva has blood and guts flying everywhere. Wolf has massive animal cruelty. CotS has people getting sucked into space. Lain has multiple suicides. All of the above are classics with cuteness levels that never even approach "crazy"

In fact, I'd be willing to say that there are more serious animes than "crazy cutesy" ones. Of course, that would depend on what one considers to be too much cute.

  2. Re:Madlax is decent so far on American Anime Localization Company Tries Torrents · · Score: 2, Insightful

Okay if this were .hack or Tsubasa Chronicle, the whole always-the-same thing would be applicable. It is indeed a flaw that Kajiura needs to address. But there's no way in hell you can say that about Kajiura's work in Noir. There are so many incredible tracks that are completely unexpected from her, so much so that I regard Noir as her best work, if not one of the best soundtracks of any anime.

Tracks like "Salva Nos" and "Liar You Lie" are pretty much vintage Yuki, but the piano tracks such as "Solitude by the Window" and "Kirei na Kanjou Piano Version" are beautiful in their simplicity and their originality. Add to that tracks like "Colloseum" and "Le Grande Retour" where she just pulls out something *completely* original... I just fail to see how you or anyone could see Noir's music as bland. If nothing else, there's no denying how varied it is.

You watched Evangelion and you say it's not deap or complex in any way? I guess that means you've already theorized the movites of the Angels, researched rich Kabbalistic symbolism present throughout the series, and know exactly who the shooter was in Kaji's final scene. Seriously. I respect the fact that anime isn't for everyone, and I think your otaku boyfriend is an idiot for not understanding that. But you simply can't say it isn't deap.

  12. A Defense of Save Points on A Gamer's Manifesto · · Score: 1

While I do agree with most of the article's points, save points are completely essential to the gaming experience, especially any game with boss battles. Take for instance games such as Metal Gear Solid (which, don't get me wrong, was an utterly phenomanal game as well as my personal favorite). In MGS's boss battles, if you lose, you just hit continue and try again. If a boss is really hard, you might end up dying quite a few times. But the end result is, you just stop caring. "Oh crap, bullet in my head. I'll get it right this time..." Sure it's still fun, but urgency, the will to win, just isn't there because you can always just start over again with no penalty whatsoever. When you finally do beat the boss, you smile with satisfaction, and move on. This is not realistic.

Now look at Devil May Cry 3, in which you're only allowed to save between missions, not during. In DMC's boss battles, you are MOTIVATED. You just finished spending quite a while solving that puzzle, plowing through hoards of enemies, and slaying a Hell Vangaurd just to GET to the boss. You do NOT want to have to do that again. When Vergil swings that sword at you you dodge like your very life depends on it. Seeing as DMC3 is a hellishly difficult game, you'll probably lose a few times, and it will hurt. You will feel as if that was YOUR chest that just got a new hole in it when Dante goes down for the count. But when you win, when you finally land that final shot, well... not many things can match that feeling of pure joy.

So yeah. Save points can be painful sometimes, but the increased motivation, joy from victory, and immersion in the game are well worth it.

I've heard some conflicting reports on what this end of "support" means exactly. Does this mean that Microsoft will no longer help you if you call them up asking for help with a language that a 10-year-old could learn? Or does it mean that Microsoft can now release Windows Updates that completely break VB6 progs? If the former, why would that mean companies have to freeze their codebases just because they have to figure things out themselvs? If the latter, how exactly could you buy support?

As someone earlier pointed out, breaking encryption alone is NOT a violation of the DMCA. It's only a violation if you're breaking encryption used to protect a copywrited work. If the MPAA broke encryption on one of their own movies, that's not a violoation. However, an interesting thought occured to me. If *all* P2P traffic is encrypted, wouldn't it be like a minefield? What if the MPAA decrypted something they though was a movie but infact was a RIAA-controlled mp3? The two most evil companies would be sueing eachother =) Well, okay, they're partners in their evilness so I don't think they'd sue eachother, but what if the MPAA decrypted some other dude's patented material. With the encryption, there's no way to tell what's patented and who patented it.
