  1. Re:Welcome to the Present on Windows Longhorn to make Graphics Cards more Important · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Entry-level" is a relative term. To a hard-core gamer, a Radeon 9200 is an entry-level video card. To your average desktop user, a Radeon 9200 is a high-end video card. A 9200 with 64MB of RAM is hardly an entry-level card for your average email/internet/word processing user. But I guess by the time Longhorn is actually released, entry-level cards will be shipping with 4 GB of DDR4, will be running 2 Ghz cores and run on PCI-whateverthehelltheycomeupwithnext. The fact is that Mac OS X had these "amazing new graphics rendering capabilities" with the release of 10.2 a couple years ago. Apple is still about 5-6 years ahead of Microsoft...

Not true. I was recently in the market for a new cell phone and had just about convinced myself to buy the N-Gage as it was both a killer phone and a decent game platform (as far as cell phones are concerned). The only thing that stopped me was the fact that it was $150. I ended up going with a Sony T637 instead because it plays games and has a camera built in (and it ended up costing me only $30). I have downloaded Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and will shortly be getting another game. I have taken quite a few pictures with it and have found it to be very convenient. Oh, and I am, as you put it, a USian. As soon we kill our land line, I may very well end up with an N-Gage and turn the T637 over to my wife.

Oddly enough, I've been playing video games since '85 when I started playing on my friends Atari. I have completed every Metroid game except the newest one for the DS and the latest one on the GBA, MOH:AA and both expansions for it, I am currently about two levels from the end of HL2, I have been a frequent player of CS:Source (and good ol' CS back in the day)...it would take less time to discuss the games I haven't played. Listen, just because I don't like GTA doesn't mean I'm not a gamer. It's not that you walk, run, or jump repetitively that gets to me, it's the five solid minutes of running, driving, or flying somewhere without doing anything. Over my week off for Christmas, I played Mario Sunshine for ten hours a day three days in a row. Trust me: I play games.

Yeah, about that...I opened a present one Christmas morning that was in the shape of a Gameboy game box. I was really excited until I opened the wrapping paper, and there inside was a game title "Joshua." Talk about a letdown. Anyways, the game sucked. It also locked up my gameboy quite frequently. I've also (unfortunately) owned King of Kings, but it is no longer for sale on their website (it was released for the NES). Here's an interesting "article" about the company:

Being an Apple Authorized Service technician, I can tell you that if you try to do a memory upgrade, and you botch it, and then take it to an AASP, you will definitely not be covered under warranty. However, if you know what you're doing, by all means, go ahead. Just don't expect to get an warranty work done afterwards. Just so you know, last time I did repairs (the grapefruit iMac was just starting to show up in our service depot) Apple was still using Micron RAM. Also, unless they've changed it, Apple applies a blue paste (don't know for sure what it is) to the screws before the final assembly is made. Once you remove those screws, it strips the paste. So, if you've been inside the case, someone with a little experience will know right away.

...so in the future when Apple sucks again you will be faced with a daunting upgrade task. This is the reason why Microsoft is so big...

Apple sucks in cycles. Microsoft is consistently sucky. Just like when Microsoft released Windows 95, all companies were faced with a daunting upgrade task. Come on. Every 9x release of Windows has pretty much been a catastrophe. Have corporations jumped ship in droves just because MS released a low-quality OS? Of course not.

This is the reason why Microsoft is so big, and the reason why Linux is so strong.

Apple is a big company. Their revenue is in the billions and their customer base is in the high double-digit millions (if not more, if you count iPod owners). Mac OS X is just as "strong" as Linux. It has roughly the same number of users and offers nearly identical functionality. Why is Linux so great? Some people don't want to spend the weekend rebuilding their kernel just so they can get feature XYZ to work.

Apple loves to make the big press release and get all the people drooling at their new product...

How is that different from any other company? "Sony loves to make the big press release and get all the people drooling at their new product..." "General Motors loves to make the press release and get all the people drooling at their new product..."

And when their supplies run out that is the end of them other then buying them used on ebay

That's what service warranties are for. Most companies purchase service contracts with their hardware. Apple supports their products, including all associated hardware, for about 6 to 7 years after they stop selling them. Hmmm...yep 6 and 7 are both between 4 and 10.

I find very few points in your argument that are either well thought out or accurate. As they say, ignorance is bliss.
