Obviously nobody is going to notice a voter who opens up a voting machine to put in a reprogramed flash card for a machine he knows nothing about. Ooooh I'm scared.
I was once a Wal-Mart cash associate. Yeah, I hated the thing. I was responsible for making it sure it worked all the time, but Windows would constantly crash on the thing. How do you explain to customers why their self check out machine broke?
That actually comes from Moses. When the Isrealites sinned, a lot of people got sick. So God had moses show the Isrealites a golden snake. Whoever looked at it was healed.
That's actually one of the reasons I gave up obtaining unlawful copies of music, movies, and software. (other reasons include wanting to follow the law and cheesy stuff like that). I had tons of SNES ROMs, MP3s, and Anime on my PC. Didn't really want to play any of them.
Now that I buy my games again, I enjoy each one I buy. I mean, why bother completing a game when I had a bunch to choose from. I was mostly playing half of level one of each game. It's counter-intuitive but I think of it as paying for the ability to enjoy a product.
And I know there's the unwritten/. rule of not bringing any religion into the discussions, but in C.S. Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters", Wormwood was instructed to have his patient to do wrong and then get nothing in return. That's what happens with piracy. We have all the games now, but we don't enjoy games anymore. We have all the latest movies, but there's nothing good to watch. We have every MP3 on the planet, but we're not in the mood to listen to anything.
Yeah, Slashdot is teh most AMAZING tech news site Evar!!1 It's too bad all of their news flies at the speed of CowboyNeil.

I see your point. Being in the states, it's probably a little harder for me to understand. Especially since I've imported games to the US that won't be released here. I guess the one thing that I think of when it comes to pirating games that havn't been released here is Final Fantasy.
Obviously a lot of the Final Fantasy games didn't come to the US until the Playstation. Before that one could rationalize that they should pirate them since it's not coming state side. Or how about Earthbound 0. I know that's one game I'd love to get my hands on, but if Mother 1+2 comes to the states and I've already pirated and beat Earthbound 0 would I want to get it? Finally, I think of Sonic Championship. It's a game I thought I'd never see on a console. Just a few months ago, it came out for the GameCube as part of the Sonic Gems collection.
So I guess the thing that keeps me from pirating is that: #1 Games eventually will make it here state side. #2 Old games will eventually be re-released (a collection, X-Box Arcade, Revolution, etc...) #3 If I really want it, I can pay $65 to import it.
That being said, I do use emulators for games I currently own for consoles that don't work anymore or perform poorly. A good example is Zelda: Majora's Mask for N64. I've got the Gamecube version, but the emulation on the Gamecube is choppy. So I use a PC to get a smoother game experience. Another example is my Genesis/32x game collection. There is no way I'll ever get my Genesis to work again. So I keep my old carts and run their ROMs on my PC.
So you can do what you want when it comes to buying vs. pirating a game. I'm glad you support the franchise when you do (but unfortunately, not necessarily the dev team for the game). I just wanted to provide some additional insight into the complicated issue.
You know, I use to be the same way. But instead of buying the game after I liked one game in the series, I would try to figure out where I could download the rest. I then started to lose interest in gaming. I didn't appreciate the "collection" I built up. How could I? After all, who has time to appreciate 1500 games.
I eventually decided with my wife that we should no longer pirate music, movies, games, etc... Now I've fallen in love with gaming all over again. When I buy a game, I get joy from going to the store, handing over my hard earned money and get a well made game. If I want to try before I buy, I play demo discs or borrow games from my buddies.
As for hard to buy games, there's nothing like eBay. It's a blast to snag that super rare gem. And then sometimes, one finds out why it's a super rare "gem". But anyway to sum things up, pirating is a lot like porn. It's addictive and you lose interest in the real thing.
I don't think parents trying to "ban" a videogame has anything to do with teens playing less games. I have a hard time imagioning most teens agreeing with their parents on any games.
I know when I was a teen, I wanted to play MA-17 games just because they were MA-17. Now that I'm a "grown-up" I can't stand most M rated games.
It would be awesome if you could move around in 3D evironments shooting cartoon ducks (and possibly that laughing dog). I think the one thing that differenciates Revolutions controller and a light gun is the ability to freely move. If I remembered correctly, light gun games moved for you.
Um.. yeah, Netflix is...uh... great. That is if you think decieving the customer is great. Here's how Netflix really works. (Oh and google it if you want to verify my facts.)
Month 1: DVDs come amazingly fast. You can go through your entire queue in one month.
Month 2: DVD still coming strong.
Month 3: Items in the top of your queue don't seem to come very often. Your DVDs seem to have a mysterious 1-2 day delay on them.
I'm guessing you haven't tried out Myth.19. It's got a neat feature that if you're watching a show and then later decide to record it, it'll record from the beginning. But as for Myth, I enjoy it. It's completly custom made for my needs. I can record multiple shows, watch myth recorded programs anywhere on my network, and use XBOXs as low def "portable" front ends.
I'm fail to see your point. Reread my post. I use the qualifier "some". That means, at least one. But tell me, how many marriages that involve pornography lasts until one of 'em dies of old age? Just tell your wife that you're going to go look at crazy teen sex so that you would be able to love her more and then post your response.
It's not like these sites are ruining lives by giving people cancer.
Okay, so it's not ruining lives by giving people cancer, but it does ruin some marraiges, relationships, etc... Quite frankly, it's also addictive. Try going without porn for a month and you'll know what I mean. I've heard it once called the crack/cocain for the soul.
So what's the big deal? I don't know, but sex seems to keep a marriage together. Porn takes away from that. Instead of wanting your spouce, one has an escape. Variety is always more tempting. So the relationship remains without sex and slowly dies off. And the sad thing is, is that the porn is always more tempting than the real thing.
I totally agree. Now days when a movie comes out that I wish to see, I just que it up on my blockbuster account and wait for it to arrive on DVD. The fact of the matter is, is that my home entertainment system (30" HDTV, 5.1 Surround) is comparible to a theater's. Okay, so my images aren't blurry and 20 feet high, but that doesn't matter since one naturally sits closer to the TV Screen.
When I get done watching a DVD, I can view alternate endings, outtakes, play a board game based on the movie, etc...
About the only time I go to a theater these days is when my wife and I go out on a date, there is a movie that we really want to watch, and we happen to be in the area.
Basically the source is the recipie to make the program. In this case, it contains the recipie to make MechCommander 2. You basically feed this code into what is called a compiler. This then reads the source and makes the game. So you won't have the game right away, but you can make the game with this.
I agree with you on handheld games should be available for the DS. But I also think that games from all 2D consoles should also be available on the DS. I would love to play games like Sonic & Knuckles on the road.
Perhaps that should read, "You want to teach students that programming is frustrating? Use Lisp" I'm just kidding. Lisp has always been my least favorite language. It's a beauty for me to read, but a pain to program.
I've already told my wife that no kid of mine's going to touch BASIC.:) I think the best "first language" would be C# or Java. They're both object oriented languages.
There are two thoughts in the programming world on how to teach people to program. One thought is that we teach them things like what a for loop looks like and how to do an if statement. The other thought is that we teach them objects first and then teach them the rest of that stuff.
I tend to think that learning objects first is the best way to go. The reason I say this is that after learning to write a program from top to bottom, objects become intimidating. Classes are confusing. So on and so forth. By teaching students early on how to program in that object mindset, it becomes easier to write a program.
When I learned to program, I taught myself BASIC first. Then I tried learning C++. When I got to the chapter on classes, I was lost. I didn't know what they were for and why I would need them. So I struggled with classes for years. Eventually I decided to take a step back and reteach myself how to code, starting with objects. This made a world of difference.
Yeah, outsourcing is great. It's the reason I have a job. The company I work for provides IT services to other companies. It creates win-win situations. Other companies now have a virtual IT department and I get a paycheck.:)
C'mon. Haven't you ever watch Star Trek? They send out messages to unknown aliens, hack unknown computer systems, and read unknown languages all the time! It should be easy to do.
Obviously nobody is going to notice a voter who opens up a voting machine to put in a reprogramed flash card for a machine he knows nothing about. Ooooh I'm scared.
Even better. I can ask for $10 as bribe money not to tell management that they broke the expensive all mighty self checkout machine.
I was once a Wal-Mart cash associate. Yeah, I hated the thing. I was responsible for making it sure it worked all the time, but Windows would constantly crash on the thing. How do you explain to customers why their self check out machine broke?

I guess it's fair. After all, Golden Eye won't be coming to the Revolution either.
