To the "why is this here on /." replies, I humbly submit the following: Please note that this IS a geek/tech-related post. Note the explicit warning of humor, as exhibited by the big monty python foot icon. If anyone takes offence (sp) at this being yet another US-centric post, well, I'll give you that, but just remember that US political and technological affairs do affect everyone -- just ask an Iraqi... or an Afghani, or an Iranian, or a Cuban, or a Vietnamese... I'm too lazy to link to the 12,000 non-humorous /. posts on the sad state of e-voting in the states, but I'm sure you've already ignored those posts once. That said, the video itself was stale, predictable Onion humor -- you really needn't read past the headline, as there's not much more too it.

One Friedman Unit, also known as "one Friedman" or "one F.U.", equals six months. The term is a tongue-in-cheek neologism coined by blogger Atrios (Duncan Black) in reference to the discovery by Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting of journalist Thomas Friedman's repeated use of "the next six months" as the time period in which, according to Friedman, "we're going to find out...whether a decent outcome is possible" in the Iraq War. FAIR cited his use of the phrase as early as 2003. http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Friedman_(Iraq_War_time_unit)

  7. Re:Revenue or Surveillance? on Manhattan 1984 · · Score: 1

Yes, I'm as paranoid as the next guy (on /.), but I can appreciate this idea to "regulate... through differential charging." This seems to be happening in my US city, where a series of red-light and speeding cameras is bringing in a massive amount of revenue for the city. I doubt these (presumably still cameras) are networked (although we do have a series of networked surveillance video cameras, supposedly only turned on for "special" occasions). Also on this idea of revenue growing, when our automated system records you speeding, takes your license plate photo, and mails you a ticket, there's no "points" taken from your license or other criminal liability; it's just a civil offense, unlike when a human police officer catches you and tickets you for speeding.

Sure it's a stretch, but just because it isn't part of _our_ public 'online' experience, doesn't mean that it isn't (or won't be) accessible to _someone_ online (in some sense), by which I mean stored and network-accessible. Sadly, I'll probably never get to see my own complete credit/financial, telephone, ATM, public transit, driving, air travel, medical, and employment histories at-a-glance (or yours), although someone might.

Maybe a second layer of tinfoil wouldn't hurt.

At any rate, I miss that pillow. As far as doing its job (supporting my head and neck), it was by far the most comfortable pillow ever.
