I will retract my statement about slashdotters being uninformed. Your response proves that is not true. While scanning the posts regarding MySpace, it dawned on me that a lot of opinions were coming from fingers that do not actually use the site.

I will agree that it is an abomination to reputable, well made websites, for all the reasons that you stated. However, the concept behind MySpace is what I appreciate. It is not a new idea, but it is the first site to "get it right". There is a lot of work to be done for the MySpace level of social networking to be tolerable by the elite tech user, but for the masses it works and it works rather well. Everytime I am reminded about News Corp. ownership I do cringe and feel a small part of myself die.

Social networking is revolutionizing the way our world works. The kids discovered it, and used it. Now the adults are discovering how useful it can be. Soon enough it will be like email. I am over 25, have an active social life, and MySpace has become part of my daily routine. It is socially generated content that keeps me up to date on the lives of the people I actually find interesting - my friends! Stop listening to the 10pm news about how someone's daughter was stalked by some perv on MySpace. With over 111 million users, those cases are few and far between. Educate your children, stop being a stupid american and pointing the finger elsewhere, you know who is at fault. To all you older folks out there, what is wrong with embracing something youthful? MySpace has humongous marketing potential. It isn't going anywhere for quite a while.

Sure, you may not save money today by being an early adopter. However, you will be making a big statement to the industry that you want efficient transportation, and sensible use of a commidity that is the life blood of our economy.
Due your math for today, but think about tomorrow. Hybrids can only get better, but if no one buys them the manufacturers will not make them. After massive adoption, we may start seeing articles crying that the next technology is not cost effective. Compounded interest and technology have a lot in common.

  8. Looters on Music Industry Threatens to Pull Plug on Apple · · Score: 1

Apple scares the industry. For years the music industry has not had to do anything. They find musicians and force music onto the masses through politics and marketing. The musicians create, the consumer buys, the music industry profits.
Apple has removed several key parts in the industry - media, and distribution. With iTunes, the artist can ideally record music, put it on iTunes, and then promote it. The music industry will see nothing, and Apple will see everything.
Please Apple, do not cave in and accept these demands. Given enough time, the non-evolving leaders of the current industry will dissolve and people will forget that they ever dealt in music.

...and will the investment ever recoup the costs compared to paying an electricity bill before the lifetime of the unit is up?

I may be a little offtopic here, but I think it is important.
I disagree with applying economics when it comes to energy, especially in this case. In order for any technology to become commodidized, early adopters will always pay through the nose. As producers make large margins selling to these early adopters, they pump more money into reaching a larger market, which includes price reduction, product advancement etc.
My argument is that we should not be shying away from energy ideas because they are prohibitely expensive, or they do not recoup there cost. Was electricity cheap before it was in every household? Was running water? Spend the $$, save the future, and stimulate the economy. What is the problem with this?
It is my opinion that I would rather spend more money on renewable energy for the piece of mind that my "eco-load" is reasonable, than to pad my bank account and contribute to a serious problem.

  14. Environmentally friendly? Independent of oil? on Genetic Research In The Heart of Amish Country · · Score: 1

I have been reading posts and I see two claims that Amish practice environmentally friendly farming methods, and that they will survive peak oil.

Sorry, but in my personal experience (I lived next to Amish for years) some actually do more harm than good. The particular family that lived next to us operated a sawmill. They would stockpile months worth of scrap wood and light a fire to it that would rival A&M's bonfire. It was cool a few times, but they neglected the fact that this was done next to a very important and protected trout stream. It would rain and runoff from the ashes would seep into this stream causing changes to the PH level, harming the inhabitants.

Since electricity was not acceptable to this particular church, they ran their sawmill using diesel fuel. Our well water began to smell funny, and tests confirmed that diesel fuel was in our water. The trout stream ran next to the sawmill, and apparently they would clean fuel containers in the stream. Our well water was located 500ft below this stream. They obviously were doing something more than cleaning containers to get diesel fuel into our well. The Department of Natural Resources investigated and found that the level of diesel fuel was around 2000ppm in the stream!

I am not here to rag on the Amish, but to simply remind you that everyone is capable of damage to the environment; when profit is involved. The amish are a peaceful group of people and they live a life that seems enchanting to some of us, but corruption and greed lives everywhere.

I cannot recall the actual numbers, but in general legal software in China costs the average worker a larger ratio of their income vs. the cost to a US citizen.

Is this fair? That just depends on your perspective. Do you blame the chinese government for the low median income, or do you blame the people for not being more ambitious?

The two arguments above are Black and White, there is a lot of grey out there. I personally think it is unwise to make sweeping claims that these acts are legal or illegal.

Energy should be approached in the same way that we approach our finances - with conservation and diversity.
