there may well still be a lot of legacy Pentium IVs around running just fine. Maybe we'll be able to get these guys to consider alternatives at that point?

Most Pentiums IVs can support 64 bit processes.

from Intel's website Scalability and performance with Intel® EM64T Intel® Extended Memory 64 Technology (Intel® EM64T) can improve performance by allowing the system to address more than 4 GB of both virtual and physical memory. Intel EM64T also provides support for 64 bit computing to help handle the applications of tomorrow.

My guess is that they added it strait to the server buddy list, buddy lists for AIM are stored on their server, which they have control of they probably just added it to that list. I'm willing to bet there software doesn't have some backdoor (this isn't Sony) allowing them to add buddy lists from your software, when they have a much easier way of doing it.

Wonderful article. Twenty years ago I believed that writing software would soon become a licensed profession. (Need alicense to own a compiler, for instance.) I thought that the event that would inevitably trigger this is when a software bug caused a human death.

This is like saying you need a license to operate a Soda Vending Machine because some idiot decided tipping it over trying to get a free soda was a smart idea. You might have to put warnings on compliers like do not code if you have no clue what you are doing, etc but requiring a license won't ever happen. I am sure there will be lawsuits in the future regarding software bugs, but any software being used where an error could cause a human death is going to have a corporation behind it, that can be held responsible.

I read that too and thought it was odd that none of the weapons mentioned, ak-47, m-16, pistols, are weapons that snipers use. An M-16 has an effective range of 300-400 meters or so. Snipers are capable of sitting 1000 meters out and hitting their target. The sound of a weapon discharge at that distance is very faint. Also, this is picking nits... but... Snipers use smokeless powder. They work very hard at not being seen.

Your post has some incorrect facts
    1) An M-16 has an effective range of 550 meters, and its not hard, every year I have to qualify with my rifle and we fire at the 500 yard range in the prone, at a normal human target I hit 7 out of 10 shots with ease, and I'm far from being a skilled shooter.
    2) Most snipers in the Middle East use an ak-47s with a scope
    3) Snipers are capable of shooting up to 1500 meters away; the record for the longest kill is held by Carlos Hathcock from 2250 meters away (granted he was one of the best snipers around)
