    I wasn't sure about this earlier, but the court must be able to tell apart work from private mail.

    Not at all. That's why i wrote, i don't think it was illegal.
    Probably you are much more knowledgeable, so you can tell:
    1. Would it have been legal if she used her government mail service for those emails?
    2. Would it have been legal to send such mails on ANY service?

    I don't think she did anything illegal. Probably she did something stupid.
    On the other hand, the hacker did something illegal and did it stupidly.
    So this is 2:1 in the Palin vs. Hacker match.

    About five years ago i got some 'pirated' cds. I also bought some legally (in those times DRM was not so rampant).
    I bought CD's of people whose music i liked from the 'pirated' samples.
    I still listen to those, and don't buy or pirate any more.
    Music companies will eventually die out, because they don't have any added value over indie, pirated or otherwise free music.
    DRM just takes all remaining value away. They should try to innovate their distribution methods and pricing, maybe then they will survive.

    The problem is that country USA makes its law a law in country Everywhere.
    I don't mind if they 'export democracy', the problem is when they start to export their corporate laws which don't even have a wide consensus in the USA.

    The point is that DRM won't deter people interested in pirated copies.
    DRM screws only the people who buy the game with it.

    You mean, you had your drive 'accidentally' overwritten by zeros using the dd utility?
    Or what?
    Obviously the issue here isn't about recovering data from a hd failure or accident.
    Also, reputed data recovery firms (who got a cleanroom, for example) were allowed to do all their high tech woodoo, so it isn't an excuse either.
    The only valid argument is that this contest doesn't worth the hassle (not because of the meager price), but because of the meager publicity.
    Otherwise it is fine.

    1. if you don't accept this simple the challenge, you definitely scam your customers. Some will take notice, and you lose more.

    2. if you accept the challenge and WIN, then you get free advertising. (If you accept but lose, you still get some bad PR, but at least you can say the drive was fake).
