  1. Well just explains it all... on Key Advantage of Open Source is Not Cost Savings · · Score: 1

It finally makes sense. I'm paying the communists without even knowing it! God damnit Stalin, you never go away. Its all pretend that I downloaded my copy of linux and installed it while I had to go to the store to buy commercial software and pull money from my account. Somehow the first part costed me more! This world just keeps making more and more sense. Anyways on a serious less sarcastic note, these studies are getting very old very fast. Cause they keep claiming it costs more without ANY proof that I have been able to see or locate. At the same time I'm hearing studies that say government and businesses are switching to it because it is cheaper. Someone is lying! My guess is its the people saying Open Source is more expensive cause for some reason when you have the money to lie and it benefits you, you create the lies that the people will see. While all this jibber jabber and hocus pocus junk continues to confuse people. I will flip off corporate idiots who make useless studies and continue to use the software which I never spent a dime on.

Who is going to trade in their 20 GB, 30 GB, 40 GB, or 60 GB iPod for a 4 GB phone! Well hmm... I can run Linux on my iPod and I can store more music. The best part! I didn't have to switch my cellphone carrier for it either. So everyone will magically switch cellphone carriers and go through that pain in the ass for 4 GB phones. Ya right... So if you currently use Nokia phones then thats awesome and you should get this but I don't think the world is going to change because of this device.

  15. Re:Dual system scenarios on Midsize Businesses Not Considering Linux? · · Score: 1

Yes that is the simple reality of the world we live in. People stick to what they know because new things present challenges and consume time because you do have to learn it. The nice thing for your situation however is that Mac OS X is Darwin Unix at its core and therefore has a lot in common with Linux but probably just as many things are different as well.

As far as support, I couldn't agree more. Most people never actually use support. Windows dominates not because its support is far superior, cheaper, etc. Rather it dominates simply because people know it. Its part of already controlling the market place. It makes the computing business quite interesting because the best product doesn't win by being the best but by getting the market first...

Its interesting how not many people mention or talk about this at all. Maybe the linux community needs to seriously consider offering training programs around the world of some sort. Yet that effort would have to be huge and it would be hard to organize.

  16. Dual system scenarios on Midsize Businesses Not Considering Linux? · · Score: 2, Interesting

From reading all the comments thus far, its becoming obvious that these companies don't want to run linux because they already are paying for support with Windows.

My question is quite simple. Is it really more expensive to run Linux after already paying for windows? Seriously because I thought (never bought a windows OS myself) that you had to basically purchase a copy of windows for each department, etc. Microsoft I believe makes you pay for multiple copies of the same OS because thats how it makes the money to maintain its position in the marketplace. I could be wrong but if I'm not then it tells me a lot of companies find Windows cheaper when they use it illegally.

A lot of this varies greatly between companies too. A dry cleaning company may be more reluctant to use Linux then a company specializing in electronics. Keep in mind that these surveys generalize a large amount.

Please explain why this is a HUGE issue? I don't normally use laptops to setup headless boxes that need to be secure. It all depends on what you use it for. Obviously I didn't buy my mac to become a server. I have a dedicated linux router that provides all the security I need on my WAN and I have ClamXav for my mac. As a client it works just fine.

Just remember its hard for apple to try to make Mac OS usuable for the morons and robust enough for the geeks. All in all I think they did pretty decently. Its more secure then windows although the permission setup is still not as secure as linux. Hey at least they provide a decent firewall out of the box that doesn't require massive updates to even use.

  18. My dealings with Apples and Macs on Forbes Predicts 5% Desktop Share for Apple in 2005 · · Score: 3, Informative

A few years ago everyone told me not to touch a mac. Then in 2004 I got a 20 GB ipod and realized the potential. I can listen to almost all my music in the car using an aux input on my deck and I can portably listen to music on my way to class or anywhere I feel like. I even sometimes carry around an RCA cable and jack to RCA convertor so I can use it on most people's stereos. At the time I still had a thinkpad which was running linux (I was switching distros often) and I was not satsified. Don't get me wrong, I love linux but I realized that until the wireless drivers are improved, its not a great laptop distribution (I had a discussion about this with one of the PHLAK developers who was also irritated about this situation). So what did I do? I bought a Powerbook G4. OH NO some people are thinking. Its memory is lower quality and its processor isn't 3 Ghz. Yet ultimately the processor is powerful enough to do everything that a laptop should do and the software is seemless. I can compile most programs I want from linux and it accomplishes my needs with perfect wireless support and allows me to still have an easy setup to use gcc during my Computer Science classes. It beats Windows and if you ever have doubts just run a PowerPC distro on it. Yet I think some people will be impressed with how far MacOS has gone in the last few years.

Then again if it is passed at least its not in a state that I live in. Also its worth mentioning that the reason this stuff isn't taxed most likely has something to do with the products being routines on a computer system and not actual physical objects... Maybe they need to think up some rules and procedures to decide what constitutes a taxable item.

This is a very tough subject to judge. Consider if someone prints an ad in a magazine and then that magazine is found a year later in an office somewhere and the prices again are off. Should they be at fault? As far as their site goes maybe they could avoid the issue simply be putting up when the last time they updated it was and the fact that prices may vary as a result of that date. Its that simple. If they do that then the person should know the content is out of date just like an old newspaper. This should never be an issue but in this case it seems very unique to the fact that the makes of the site did nothing. Still I don't think that courts need to start fining half the net over this sort of thing. Keep this as a special case and don't use it as something to change how we look at the net and business.
