Well, those previews killed all interest I had in the game whatsoever. Sounds like a re-hash of the same old junk, just with a new engine and the same old "Poser-built" artistry. Blech.
What's funny is that this article is a great example of how evolution isn't a dogma. The scientific community is constantly seeking to improve or amend it. Insteal the ID'ers (funny how close that is to "idolaters") will just use the headline "Scientists disprove Evolution."
Kojima actually studied to filmmaking before he got into games. Or he at least wanted to be one. I forget the exact details, but I know for a fact that he pursued film before game making. The influence can certainly be seen in his games.
What a stupid reply. Thanks for taking the time to lower my IQ. Keyboard layout and programming languages. Yeah, totally the same thing. Oh wait, you must be one of the guys that's trying to sell one of these pieces of crap. My bad.
1 - Why do people keep coming up with new keyboard layouts when there's already only a few hundred million people with QWERTY committed to memory? It's not like they've come up with a new energy supply.
2 - And why does Slashdot keep posting about them? Have any geeks anywhere (other than the makers of these keyboards) actually sat around thinking of all the things they could have, it'd be a new "improved" keyboard layout? If there's a good reason please let me know.
That'd be great, ANOTHER class built entirely to kill us Mages to add to the already existing Rogues, Druids (other than Moonkin), and Shamans (glad they're on my side).
What I'm hoping is that they finally get around to the Hero Classes that were listed on Blizzard's In Development page for so long. Perhaps a Hero Class that 60 casters can move to, one for warriors, and one for the in-betweens.
I REALLY, really doubt the Blood Elves will be the race, though. They just look WAY too much like the existing Night Elves. Why would they create an entirely new race that looks 95% the same as another. Think about how unique each of the existing ones are. I'm sure Blizzard's capable of adding some new races that are just as unique. Perhaps Centaurs for Alliance (Taurens' arch enemies)? Goblins for Horde (so we have tiny PCs, too)? Or Ogres?
There's no such thing as bad press, unless you're in office, and this guys' not in office (yet?). Either he's playing the game exactly the way he wants, doing anything for attention, or he's insane and getting attention for everything he's doing. Either way, it keeps his name in the news. Doesn't matter WHY his name's in the headlines, just that it's there. As a result, he wields more power than the other 99% of us that are sane.
Keep an eye out. Hopefully in about a month I'll be releasing something that should change a few minds.
(btw, I created "Ours Again," and am one of the producers referred to working on "Game On" in the article).
I agree. I was disappointed that it's not a "Most Influential" or "Best Of Its Time" list. How many people would really play SMB today over HL2 or H2?
I was very disappointed by the bias against FPSes, though. Halo, Half Life, Half Life 2, and Deus Ex are all in the top 20-30. How is that possible for any reason other than they decided no FPS would make the Top 10 or 20? Two RTSes are in the Top 10, at least one in the Top 10.
As an FPS gamer, this oversight ticked me off a bit. I've played just about every game on this list, and I consider HL2 to be the best singleplayer game I've ever played. Dr. J and Pistol Pete might have been great before, but Michael Jordan's still the best basketball player of all time. IGN's list, though, would have all the "old school" players on top, even though current players have far-surpassed their skill level.
Of course anyone hears the word "censorship" in America they immediately knee-jerk into holier-than-thou mode. In America, yes, censorship is a huge problem. Does that mean it's bad everywhere?
Here's a clear question to ask yourself: Is it possible for a situation to exist where an amount of censorship by the government is "okay"?
If there is one, it'd be China. Unfortunately, not everyone has 4 years free to study the country like I did, so most will simply judge from afar.
EXACTLY!!! This congressman is really on to something. We SHOULD demand to see all of the personal financial information of our country's "leaders." This is a GREAT idea, even if it means doing the same for the scientists. Somehow, I imagine the "dirt" dug-up about the scientists would be far less, well, fertilized.
yes, Ion Storm were the developers that ruined DX2, but I think it's the Xbox's limitations that forced them to make the wrong decisions. First off, I don't think DX2 could ever meet the level of uniqueness DX had, since there was already DX, so they were bound for an inferior sequel right off the bat. They did make a pretty interesting story, and the graphics/physics system was ahead of its time.
BUT, Ion Storm was forced to remove the more endearing gameplay mechanics because of the knowledge it was being ported to console. For one, the Xbox's physical memory is quite paltry. There is no way that the Xbox could handle the enormous, wide-open levels of the first game unless they settled for a sub-par graphics presentation. Which of course, no one ever stands for anymore (WoW is about the only other major game than DX1 that put substance and style over power and polygons when it comes to graphics).
The other thing was that the game had to be controller-friendly. So they created a dumbed-down inventory system with none of the depth that made the first game's item manipulation fun. They also dumbed-down the character building. The first DX's character building was so in-depth and varied, and had such a strong influence on how you played the game, that it had really combined the best parts of both FPSes and RPGs. DX2, though, just had some arbitrary skills to improve that did effect the game, but not to the level of the first.
So both the limitations of the hardware, and the limitations of the audience of the consoles put very large restrictions on the development of the second Deus Ex. Yes GTA was done beautifully on all systems, but DX isn't GTA. GTA is nowhere near as complex as the first DX. A great Deus Ex sequel could only have been done for PC.
The answer is yes, the more expressive animations were limited by the game. More the model than the engine, though. Valve has an interest in not letting their characters look too odd or crazy, so the models were built with some limitations to how much their faces could contort. The models are very good at subtle emotions, but not so great at more expressive stuff. The engine itself is capable of much more, though.
according to an interview, Spielberg is actually very familiar with the entire Transformers storyline and is a huge fan. It's not like Spielberg needs the money. For some people to suggest he's doing it for the paycheck is quite silly. I'm quite optimistic knowing he's involved.
I'm not that sure Deus Ex is that great of an example. I thought all sides of the spectrum in that game made compelling arguments. Even the ones considered by the article to be "monsters." They weren't monsters, though, but real people. Far more real than the pure-evil supervillians of most games.
It would be interesting, though, to have them portrayed a bit more realistically, though. Usually, it is those pushing for violence that are the most charismatic, and the easiest to follow. Finding the peaceful route is always the hardest, and usually least popular. Think of all the charismatic leaders that have inspired violence: hundreds, thousands. Now how many can you think of that have inspired people towards true peace? Can probably count them on your fingers; Ghandi, MLK Jr., Jesus Christ, Laozi, Buddha, etc.
Would really like to see a game where it was harder to find, not just harder to follow, the peaceful path (where as in Deus Ex you just had to not kill people, though it was much harder, gameplay-wise).
one other thing that SOMETIMES works is that although they don't allow themselves to be deleted, these files do like to be copied. So try Cut/Paste into the recycle bin, then Empty it. Has worked a few times for me.
My mother's a very experienced teacher, and very experienced with computers. She's basically her school's IT expert. She told me "OpenOffice" is total crap." I'll have to take her word on it.
I talked a bit about this kind of thing in the blog the /. edition of Carnival of Games linked to:

I think the use of pre-rendered CG is unnecessary, and costly.

Exactly. HL2 is exactly what this guy was talking about. HL2 SHOW you the story. Cutscenes TELL you the story. Big difference.

Two questions:

reason #3402 why WA > all. :P

now if only they'd start charging $100 each for the BULLETS that cause the wounds, like Chris Rock suggested, THEN we'd be getting somewhere!

maybe the memory wipe changed his voice somewhat. That'd be enough of an explanation for me, since I know it's the same actor doing the voice.
what about Ice Climber? Will that save me?

yep, I bet this would be the way to go. Would cost some more money, but how much money is the amount of YOUR time saved worth?
