This videogame violence/sex/adult-oriented business has gotten incredibly stale.

It's really quite simple. This game was rated M, for mature players 17 and older. I'd like to talk to the parents of under-17 children playing GTA. I mean, COME ON. The name of the game is GRAND THEFT AUTO. It has a big ol' M on the front of the box. Who in their right mind thinks this is made for kids?

Parents are ultimately responsible (and held accountable!) for what their children do and are exposed to until the age of 18, at which point they become personally accountable. That's part of being a good parent. Read the ratings and use them in your purchasing decisions. Keep up on what your child is into and does with his/her time. BE A FUCKING PARENT, for God's sake!

If little Timmy played GTA at a friend's house, bitch to their parents about the game and then explain to your child why they shouldn't be playing Mature-rated games. You have the ultimate say-so in what your child does, so use that to RAISE THEM!

The way I see it, this is a complete and total non-issue. The ratings are there, broken down into the actual reasons why the game got that rating. Use them. End of story.

TR1 is still my favorite of them all. My favorite level would probably be "Sanctuary of the Scion", simply because it had a huge sphinx and two also huge Horus and Anubis statues in that giant pool of water.

That's what I liked most about TR1 was its sense of scale. Some of the places were just plain old intimidating. Tack on the musical cues (like the one in "Tomb of Tihocan" where you surface in front of the tomb -- that choir still gets me to this day).

I sure hope they bring the feeling of TR1 back to the new game. Hell, I'd buy a remake of TR1 with updated graphics. That'd be awesome, IMHO.

"Treat them like a friend you've known a while and are comfortable interacting with."

Right, because that never gets you the "let's just be friends"/"you're like a brother to me" routine, and we all know that geeks never get that.

Sarcasm aside, geeks by and large are actually pretty nice people (at least most of the ones I've interacted with), but most of them aren't considered prime choice for your typical female, whether it's because of the social stigma or their appearance or something else. They get thrown into the "nice guy/best friend" role because they have difficulty asserting themselves and voicing their desires. This tends to be a more introverted behavior, but that makes sense as most geeks are introverted. I've had more female friends than male friends in my life, and that's both frustrating and nice.

No, I'd say the biggest roadblock to geeks finding a good relationship -- hell, even speaking to a woman -- is self-confidence, because that's where it all starts: approach. It's a Catch-22, really, though, because you can't expect someone who's been ridiculed for being nerdy or weird or different to feel any form of self-confidence after being made to feel worthless for such a huge portion of their life. They fear rejection because it's incredibly painful, yet at the same time they hate being lonely.

I have about this much [] self-confidence, and I know that's what's holding me back. That and I gotta lay off the ribs. Mmmmm, ribs.

  6. My question... on Apple Switching to Intel · · Score: 1
If Apple is going the direction of the x86 processor, does this mean that finally, FINALLY, Mac gaming will take off? Maybe more developers will start writing games and other software for Macs because they would be using the same architecture as Windows machines. Perhaps games will be more trivial to port or develop simultaneously with their Windows couterparts.

Personally, I feel that Apple should make nifty consumer gadgets and focus on making MacOS into a direct, and I mean DIRECT, competitor to Windows. The only reason I'm stuck using Windows machines is because I love to play games, and frankly, Apple's offerings are either slim or 6 months behind Windows releases. It'd be awesome if I could stick OSX on my Intel box with all the bells and whistles, a nice selection of games, and FINALLY give Windows the finger.

  10. I agree, but... on More Details on Zelda Emerge · · Score: 3, Interesting

We haven't always had a cartoony Link.

In Zelda II, Link was 15 and had the Triforce on his left hand (the first occurance of this "branding"). That was the first adult-like Link there was. Then Ocarina of Time had Link at around the same age.

I was personally rather disappointed when Wind Waker was first shown. However, I grew to love the game while I played it, because no Zelda yet has let me down in terms of fun (let's not count the stuff on the CD-i).

I'm a fan of this more adult look. I always wanted the Zelda series to take a more serious/adult turn. Link just screams "badass" to me, even in tights. :) Though I'd like to see him use a broader range of sword attacks instead of the standard horizontal swipe and chargey-circlular-swipey thing. However, I guess it kind of works, since Link doesn't really know he's special until it's time for him to be the Hero.

And age doesn't mean a damn thing. I was playing Wolfenstein 3D when I was 12, and for all the screaming and ranting of "concerned" groups, I didn't end up a violent psychotic. You can be mature enough at a young age to grasp such concepts as fantasy and reality without difficulty.

I personally think these tools used GTA to avoid getting in any real trouble themselves. Why take the blame for your own actions when [controversial_game_of_the_week] is there to take it for you? Why bother finding the fault in parental responsibility when you can just sue your problems away?

  23. Emulation != Evil on Emulation and the Video Game Industry · · Score: 3, Insightful

I'm a personal fan of emulation. I love firing up an emulator and playing some of my favorite games of yesteryear.

The thing I like most about emulators is that you can save an assload of shelf space and wear/tear on your consoles by just putting everything on your computer. It's the same kind of thing with ripping your CD collection to MP3 and storing the original media away in a safe place.

The majority of emulation is done for older systems; ones that the manufacturers see no more income on. Same with the developers of the software. Those games went out of "print" years ago. The only sticking point is that some companies (like Nintendo, for instance) are re-releasing their older game libraries on newer systems as part of a "retro" line. The fact of the matter is that demand for these products wouldn't even exist if emulation never came to be. Emulation helps keep nostalgia alive. I know it helped me shell out money for the GBA port of Adventure of Link.

I think that emulation is just misunderstood. It's the whole scissors-can-kill-as-well-as-cut-paper argument, just with games.

Yeah, I've never gotten into those console wars because I don't have loyalty to the systems themselves, but rather the games/franchises on those system.

When I'd already purchased a PS2 and a Gamecube, I got an X-Box simply because of Ninja Gaiden. That's another old franchise from the past that I love, and since I had read a lot of "professional" and player reviews of the game with very positive feedback, I figured it was time to get one. By the time Ninja Gaiden was released, the price had come down a great deal, and the box came with the smaller controllers. I'd say Ninja Gaiden was worth every penny I spent.

Of course, I got a lot of flack from folks insulting me for buying an "X-Cocks" and whatnot, but I really don't care who makes the console. I just like the games. Granted, I have more PS2 and Gamecube games than X-Box games, but if there's a game I want to play that only came out for X-Box (i.e. Ninja Gaiden), then I'm glad I got one. If a game I really want to play comes out for more than one console simultaneously, I tend to get the PS2 or Gamecube version instead of the X-Box version.
