Did anyone read the "hackers" resume linked at the SecurityFocus site? It really sucked. What is it with so many people having such shitty resumes? It is no wonder that people cannot get jobs in the IT field with resumes like that.
Because for some people it is easier and more enjoyable to fantasize about women who might be in their reach someday. The average MILF porn chick is well within the reach of a large part of the male population while Vivid girls and the like are so out of reach that even fantasizing about them can seem unrealistic.
Me and many other small groups of people have been using this to gain control over cameras for close to a year now. Every once in a while there is a news story about this google trick and then for like a month afterwords the most popular cams get flooded and the frame rate drops down to like 5 frames per minute. It sucks.
I have really been dreading the day when slashdot ran a story about this because I know that it will result in many of these cams being slashdotted out of existence. Why can't I have nice things?
But the Fine Art of Knitting is not essential to most peoples daily lives. On the other hand many (most?) people must use a computer as part of their job.
There is a certain basic level of understanding that everyone who uses computers should have in regards to computers just like there is a certain basic understanding that everyone who drives a car should have in regards to automobiles.
If you are going to drive a car you should know that it needs to have its oil changed every "X" number of miles, you should know when and how to turn on your hazzard lights. You should know how to open the trunk and you should understand all the basic rules of the road. You don't need to be an automotive engineer or even a mechanic but in order to keep yourself and everyone you share the road with safe you should have a firm grasp of all the basics.
The same applies to computers. If you use computers everyday; I don't care if you are a secretary, an accountant, whatever, you should know the basics. You don't need to be a computer scientist or even a run of the mill geek but in order to keep yourself and everyone you share the internet with safe you should have a firm grasp of all the basics.
Corporatism: a business philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts profit above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
I would be curious as to where you got your definition from. Everyplace I go seems to have a definition of corporatism that is more similar to the following.
Corporatism: the organization of a society into industrial and professional corporations serving as organs of political representation and exercising some control over persons and activities within their jurisdiction
Our current system is actually corporatism (aka fascism) and not really capitalist at all anymore.
I have heard fascism and corporatism used interchangably and yet when I look at every major definition of fascism that I can find it doesn't look to have anything in common with cororatism.
Fascism: a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
Our species is also the only one we know whom Nature has granted two blessed capacities: the ability to perceive our doom and the ingenuity to avoid it.
Although I agree with the first part I must disagree with the secand part of your statement. Just because we are not dead yet does not mean that we have the ingenuity to avoid our own doom.
I cannot think of any species threatening event that has been thrown at us yet. When one does occur then we may be able to use our ingenuity to survive it or we may fail and perish. But even if we succeed who is to say that the next species threatening event will be avoided by our ingenuity? Maybe we do have that ingenuity, maybe not. What if a big solar flare shot out of the sun in our direction and ripped the atmosphere away from earth? How would our ingenuity help us survive that?
because his data was in "My Documents", which apparently windows will only read if it is the copy of windows it was created with.
So, can't get to his data, now what?
Unless he was using some wierd assed encryption on his My Documents folder, I call bullshit.

Reliable companies with tried and tested products, or that bedroom coder Thorwaldes who publicly admits that he is in fact A HACKER???"

I'll throw in a second vote for snes9x. As can be seen on their download page http://www.snes9x.com/downloads.asp they have ported snes9x to; Solaris, OpenBSD, Irix, N64, FreeBSD, AmigaOS, BeOS, RiscOS, SunOS, MS-DOS, HP-UX, MacOS, Linux and Windows.
It has a very easy to use and intuitive interface with all the options that one would expect from an emulator. It is stable and has played every single ROM I've thrown at it without a single problem. Whenever I set up a new USB thumbdrive with all my essential software, snes9x always goes on there.

Currently getting around 45kB/s download and a steady 57kB/s upload. Anyways, this is just further proof that bittorrent has legitimate non-piracy related uses.
This is kind of creepy. I'll also be 54 and just a few days ago I was talking with some cow orkers about how long we think that we will live to be, I said I'll probably live to be 54. And now this.
Like another poster said, this is not such a bad thing. It really is all downhill after 54 so we'll get to live long lives and then be around to see the end of the world.
Yes the legal threats page is worth reading. It has some funny comments in it. This is part of their reply to a legal threat from ADV Films:
Hello, my dear sir(s)!
We all like Evangelion a lot. This, however, does not mean that we like YOU. So instead of mindlessly acting on your notice of so-called
infringement, I took the liberty of forwarding it to our legal counsel:
On the subject of thepiratebay.org's supposed infringement of your intellectual rights. I have been given the authority, as legal consel, to reply to your kind letter.
We understand that you are familiar with Bit Torrent technology. Then you may, or may not, understand that none of the data that you hold the
copyright to reside on thepiratebay.org's servers.
This raises the question of the reach of Swedish and European copyright law. It is the opinion of us, and the Swedish Supreme Court, that
information about WHERE to obtain copyrighted material, which is the case with Bit Torrent, is not illegal.
Are you talking about the Star Wars: X-Wing Collector Series jewel pack? Because that was the only thing that I could find that came close to fitting your description. It looks like it has been out of print for a while but I am sure that cheap used copies are easy to come by.
My question is will it run on Win2k or XP? It says on the box that it is for windows 95/98. I would hate to search this game out only to find that it won't run on my system.
Why spend days downloading movies when you can sign up for Netflix and get them delivered to your home for about 66 cents each!
It only takes me a few hours to download a movie, not days. You must have a slow ass connection.
I have looked into Netflix but their website does not display properly in Firefox... OK. I just went to Netflix so that I could get the exact error message that Firefox gives but now it appears to be working fine. If yesterday was just a fluke and Netflix website continues to work in Firefox then I am going to give serious consideration to signing up.
All too often there are movies that I would like to see that I cannot find torrents for. Plus there is that whole illegal aspect to it. I think I might give Netflix a try.
Yes. It is this whole idea of what is the client and what is the server and which does which that resulted in thousands of skript kiddiots downloading Back Orifice and infecting their own machines by double clicking on the server.exe instead of putting the server executable on the victims machine where it belongs. It is kind of counterintuitive at first.
The "average" computer user is a lazy, uninformed moron. As long as people "think" they can "use" computers, real computer "users" (who actually understand a spit of how things work) are left to be the janitors.
The "average" car owner is a lazy, uninformed moron. Really. Lots of people cannot even perform a simple of a task as changing their oil. That is why we have mechanics. If every citizen were to educate themselves about how cars work then a lot of mechanics would lose their jobs.
Same with computers. Many small busineses have a dedicated IT guy because the users are so unskilled that they need on site support every day. If users were to get a clue and learn how computers work then a lot of low level IT people; help desk, end user support jobs, etc. would lose their jobs.
As long as they keep me in work, I could care less how clueless the average user is. Their cluelessness doesn't scare me. What scares me is that high schools often offer CCNA and A+ certification classes as electives. As computer savvy gets more common, IT pro's will be less in demand. If your job is selling fish then you probably do not want to teach your customers how to fish or you will put yourself out of business.
In the literal sense, it is not DENIAL of service since nobody will find the server unresponsive due to the extra traffic bringing it down.
So if a script kiddie with an army of zombies running stacheldraht attacks a site but the attack is not sufficient to take the site down, only sufficient to cost the site money in bandwidth, is that not still a DDoS attack?
