but a fine and the threat of jail time isn't the answer.

I disagree. People seem to think that commiting crimes on a computer is somehow "not as bad" as the normal physical crimes of theft, tresspassing, etc. People need to be taught at a young age that doing things like putting a keystroke logger on a teachers computer is a real crime and not just harmless fun.

If that kid gets a job in an office and throws a keylogger on his bosses computer he will get into some real trouble and rightfully so. They need to learn early on that this kind of behaviour is unnacceptable.

But this is slashdot so I expect a bunch of replys saying that it is not the kids fault but it is the schools fault for not securing their computers.

Shit. It better last me at least a decade. $500.00 may not be a lot to you but it is for many of us. I have an old Toshiba laptop that I bought around ~1994 and I still use it. It is currently running FreeDOS. The battery is long dead but I keep it plugged into the wall next to my bed. If I cannot sleep I grab it and start up vi.exe to read all the old text files that I have saved on its 81MB hard drive.

For some reason those Mac Minis don't look like they will last a decade of hard use. I could be wrong though.

Every once in a while I think about getting a Mac. I used to think about buying a low end iBook. With the release of the Mac Mini I have been giving some thought to one of those.

My problem is that switching from a Wintel environment where I have a closed OS and open hardware to a Apple environment where I have a closed OS AND a closed hardware environment bothers me. Maybe if Macs really increase in popularity and we see lots more third party hardware manufacturers creating cheap Apple hardware then I could maybe see getting one. But right now I get all claustrophobic when I think of using a Mac.
