how many people use msn? it cant be 10% usually when google doesnt find anything, I just rephrase the terms. dont ever remember thinking "i bet msn has it"
besides you really want msn tracking you?
and for what? credits? might as well be free skee ball coupons
software is not a "commodity" market. once assembly lines are made the supply is theoretically infinite.
copies do not cost 50 or 70 bucks to make and distribute.
which makes me wonder why there is so much silence here about the real reasons ps2 had 100 million units. 1 you could get mod chips to play pirated ps2 games on it. many, many ppl never bought a game. they had hundreds of games. granted many of them were crap, they still only cost a blank dvd, a download, or at worst a rental. 2 dvd was the new movie format, ppl were dumping vhs as fast as possible. ps2 was prob the first console that seemed natural to have an optical drive on it.
ps3 is not the same. a disc is a disc. dvd's arent going anywhere. anyone who wants/needs blu ray can afford the player right now. might be different if there were free HD tv's out there. games also need HD, but u cant play them on plasma (burn in), which has the best image/color so far
"Cohn and his colleagues have created a design that they believe could triple the power of a test engine"
is that all?
this has been done years ago on a buick grand national. they were late 80's v6, and turbo'd. by adding efi, and some other tricks, quite a few people have gotten over 1200 hp out of these motors, and not just in a lab, but on a streel legal, drive-able car.

ok i won't.
just tell you how this works.
adobe sells prosumer lvl sofware. they charge their fee, and are paid when someony buys the software. nobody ask them to justify thier price. ppl may say it's gouging, immoral, and possibly even illegal price fixin, etc. adobe (and other monopolists) take a hard line stance, buy it or fuck off somewhere; we have money to make. we do it because we can. u cant stop us.
pirates* copies prosumer lvl sofware. they know the original costs money, but chose not to participate in that money generating scheme. what's in it for me? they ask. less than nothing, they conclude. ppl, software giants may say it's gouging, immoral, and possibly even illegal price fixin. pirates take a hard line stance. it aint stealing, you got your copy, we have ours, sell it, or fuck off somewhere, we got money to save. we do it becase we can....
*the term pirate is not to be confused with a bootlegger who resells counterfeit items, although an unsavory character who could destroy small ip firms, is more a product of market forces than anything else..
your choice of exampless are not exactly accurate...
"it doesn't matter if someone rapes a girl if she was dressed like she wanted it, and like I said, that's bullshit"
while nobody will disagree with what you said (logicllly nobody is really able to consent to rape...) this example does not in anyway apply to M$. it even implies that they could somehow be morally right. You have to understand; M$ is not a victim of any sort, they are predatory.
a more fitting example would be: M$/bsa is the prostitute that did not get paid after trying to screw you--check your system for viruses, trojans, and you wallet.
"That arrogant smugness, unapologetically doing what you know is wrong, is exactly what makes them look reasonable"
no that is what makes them rich. they have figured out it is worth more to break the law and pay fines than not to. they don't give a shit about the law when it does not suit them. the many lawsuits they face are a sundry business cost to them like paperclips, or toilet paper.
"It's people like you who completely undermine everything that people who contribute to FOSS projects stand for"
Really? if so, is this pirate required to support foss? just because they dont give a shit about M$?
"If someone wants an office application, there's no need to look for a FOSS alternative; just pirate a copy of Microsoft Office. Don't use Linux, just pirate a copy of Windows"
so you think it's any accident that it is easier to find pirated, illegal copies of M$ than it is to find free legal foss apps?
whenever there is a high stakes competition for millions of dollars who do you think will win: well dressed, educated, sophisticated marketing types, or fat, flip flop wearing, shirtless, virgin linux nerds living in their mom"s basement?
bsa can "require" all it wants. does not mean its legal.
all u gotta do is send em a letter asking them to cite what grounds, exactly they have for you in particular. inform them you only run legal software/alternatives, and it's none of their business what you are running. add that you will be seeking renumeration for time, and punitive damages for malicious prosecution if they have no reasonable grounds. most of all be polite, tell them they are cordially invited to fuck off and die.
insurance companies only want to offer insurance to people that dont need it. is this adverse selection too? you dont hear any wise assed economists lipping of about how insurance companies rip off everything they touch.
you do hear about people with disproportianate life insurance policies referred to as lottery winners, or criminals, but when the policy was bought insurance gladly took the premium, they just cry foul to try an weasel out of paying--the gambit is a poor beneficiary may not be able to afford court to enforce payment. this is very old sophist technique
term life insurance is the pinnacle embodiment of this principle
rationally speaking, why would anyone buy something they dont need?
solution ? simple. amke health coverage mandatory offering, at set price, hire a government actuary to do it, one that is accountable to the public. if cost of providing such healthcare insurance is less then massive profit insurance companies usually make then result = no "market failure" just pissing and moaning about paper losses, cost etc. the true test? insurance can claima loss, but if they were really losing money they would close up shop. when was the last time you ever heard of an insurance company going under?
it is called fraud, stealing etc, and is a simple tactic used by businessmen everywhere to cheat investors.
simple logic. if you are the sole owner of your house, you can sell it for whatever you like, that is your right. but if i have a stake in your house, especially as an investor, you are bound by many laws and fiduciary duties.
it does not take much imagination to see a very realistic scenario here. if your house is really worth 100 $, but you sell it for 20, giving say 10 investors 50% of the value to pay of their stake. that amounts to 1 dollar each, or 10 dollars.
this is where is makes sense to lie, because you paid 1/5 of what you should have. selling a ~20 billion $ company for ~300 million can only be done with dumptrucks of money pulling up to executive driveways in the middle of the night.
just got home DRUNK with a poutine black angus combo
the employees were not sneaky, just really cranky, even tho i tried to be as polite as possible. one of the cashiers had an xtra thumb, so u know they got super powers...
they shud make this into a mmorg and call it BTK...make of that what you will--oh wait there already is one, its called minimum wage...long grinds, low xp and very little coin to get new money making powers (like said xtra thumb).
their king looks like a very creepy, stalking version of what "the king of the jews" might look like today, had he lived. guess he knew what was coming and escaped a "fate worse than death"
and satan thus tempted: "don this uniform, king, and all you see before you shall be your customers!"
"no shit" replied the messiah "do i also get that spiffy pocket bike?"
"thats up to corporate" said the devil "i'm not burger king, they just hire me as a consultant."
will these "companies" give you a similar list?
I seriously doubt it. nobody in their right mind would do such a thing.
also if you disclose something it can invalidate a patent.
the really easy way out of this is to assume a legal stance. if they want prior inventions, just list what patents you have.
anything else is not a prior invention, but a work in progress. until somthing is 100% done, not 99.9999989 % and fully patented, it is not an invention, but an idea. remember it is not who thought of the idea first that counts, but who patented it first, and there is nothing stopping any company from cherry picking your ideas and patenting the ones they like.
good point. im sure that nobody consents to their being videotaped while committing a crime. the difference is police are actually allowed to cimmit a wide range of crimes in the name of justice. all the way from possession of stolen goods, drugs, to kidnapping, even murder. sure cops will try to explain these things away as necessary to combat crime, but when looked at objectively, it begs the question; do we really want our police engaging in such things.
about the only argument that i can support in favor of the polic is use of force. every polic officer has the right to come home safe at the end of the day. no cop should ever be punished for defending themselves. however they should get a severe punishment for attacking people without cause, or after they no longer need to use force. this is why the right to video tape them is so essential. it keeps the dirty ones a little more honest when they never know who could be watching.
these politicians are idiots. are they even in touch with reality, or is there a competition between them as to who can say the most outrageous lie that still gets public attention, & doesnt actually do anything.
next step is for tehm to find bin laden and the rest of al q. jsut back up myspace.com, and hire idiots to look thru it. it so simple, should have known they were there all along.
seriously the representatives who thought this up should be fired/recalled,; not only are they totally incompetent, adn make the usa an object of ridicule to the rest of teh world, but they are dangerously stupid, so much so taht they can actually do a lot of harm .
1 it is ok for police to lie to you about anything they want. but you can get charged for lying to them... 2 it is ok for police to wiretap, record any citizen they want, without a warrant, but it is against the law to record a police officer harassing you?
i expcet the second part to get thrown out in court. you can easily say to the cops that by talking to me, coming on my property etc you agree to be recorded. dont like it? you can fuck off then. it looks like they did not get a warrant to sieze the cameras after all. if the pigs did that to me i would give them a week to make things right, before this became the next viral video on the net.
wont settle, fine, let the public see what they did, this will help keep a judge "honest" during any trials that come out of it because they will not obviously help the police with everybody watching. it would even be a good thing to tell the judge an old colombo quote "you may want to hlp the police by going easy on them, but believe me, you wont be helping them by doing that."
police are expected to be polite and a role model for children. not some slick hustlers thay try and use the law to make life easier for them. if they dont act honorable, the reputation of the entire police force suffers. this effect adds up, until the force is mistrusted and hated by the population. this will cause honorable police to quit, and what will be left are the corrupt ones. this is already happenein, and the usa is slowly turning into mexico, with the highest levels of police corruption yet seen.
piddler countries like spain can be bought easily, and their population whipped into line. it is highly unlikely that the people will ever see freedom there. but this threatens us all. there needs to be morre strict pre-emptive legislation that makes it a CRIME to lobby government to preserve industry agianst the wishes of the people. this would stop the aa's from trying to sneak bad laws into act every day, and would eliminate the need to constantly watch them. the penalty? why stiff fines, and a tax on every such proposal, to be distributed among the CONSUMERS of copyrighted works. for those lobbyists? an extended stay in a federal Pound Me In The Ass prison.
i think a lot shit we get here about china is to distract us from a very systemmatic, and calculated erosion of our rights here.
better secure freedom in the usa before interfering with another unjust government.
how does an athletics director get to decide who can keep their scholarship anyway? arent scholarships created by donation to help worthy individuals? i seriously doubt that any of them ever say anything about having to do what you gym teacher says.
this policy is so obviously wrong its gonna fail in court fast. free speech anyone? protect the students? bullshit, it discriminates against certain types of students. how come this policy is only for atheletes, and not other members of the student body. it further discriminates against those who rely on scholarships (ie financially challenged) to enforce a policy that nobody else with money would even consider. in fact anyone with money would instantly sue if some idiot at a university (that they are paying the salary of) tried this.
i guess it just goes to prove the old saying : those who can, do. those who can't teach. those who can't teach, teach gym.
what a way to waste money.
i remember vga cards used to be cheap also, and afterthought compared to the pc. now they are easily 10x the price, all because of hype.
considering that these pad must cost tens of cents to make, i think the company has a good business plan no matter what i think.
nobody, i repeat, nobody just moves 37 billion on a whim or co-incidence.
there are even two statements in the story that show otherwise. 1 buffet and the gates' are close friends. buffets would have known about gates' resignation far sooner than anyone. 2 condition of buffet's donation is that the gates are involved in their foundation. wonder what they are planning.
now tell me again how this is judt happenstance. reminds me of the comedy "arthur" where he holds a sign saying "hey brother can you spare 750,000,000?"
now the question is not that it was planned, but why are they trying to hide it. history does not look too kindly on the charitable foundations of the ultra rich. many of them are little more than clever tax shelters. for the rich that do not like this comment, i will point out that the ultra weathy have historicslly been far more effective at amassing their fortunes, than creating charities that actually made any social impact. this is probably more about keeping the governemt's hands off this money.
want to wipe out aids? tb? oh shure lets set up a fancy society that says nice things. we can pay retail for these drugs, and the kickbacks will fly. why not buy a pharma company or 2, along with the ip to it. then give the drugs to those who need it. fyi tb is on the rise in the us, and prison popultaion has 5x the rate of tb infections. fighting tb indeed. for me, i'll belive in these foundations of the ultra rich when i see results. just moving money around does not impress me.
do you thik some 5.15 $ per hour schmoe working at a cellphone retail outlet has any access to data? or the operator of a telco?
you might as well go ask the janitor, since they are union, probably make more, and would have far better access to such information.
there is no possible reason a store cleark would be allowed near this info. 1 it would cost far to much to implement data services so widely 2 the risk of fraud, and 5.15$/ hr employees doing something wrong and profitable is far too great. and 3 the biggest reason of all.. wait for it... what possible motive does a company have in making this available on the level you want? just because it will make you happy? they dont give the faintest whiff of shit about you, your phone, or if it was stolen.
do you honestly think that the NSA even talks to shitheads working in the telcos? no it goes more like this. NSA agent shows up at telcos executives house, and says, well shame what happened to those bozos at enron, all those skeletons in the closet gettin out like that. Telco executive cuts to the chase : can i help you. NSA now that you mentioned it , yes. we want complete phone records, conversations, everything, about everyone in the usa. executive amused: that sounds pretty difficult. what would you need all that for. NSA you know, everybody has skeletons in their closet. its not the skeletons that cause executives to goto prison, its the fact that their closet gets so full because they were not able to bury them in the backyard when nobody was looking. and after a few of them are dicovered it gains momentum, soon people are looking in every closet, and even digging up the backyard. when that happens it is far too late for the executive, because they are in night of the living dead, pirates of the carribean...
telco executive; you are absolutely right, ill send a taskforce to your office tomorrow to work out this problem with skel... im mean national security.
NSA : thank you for you help, you are a true american. shakes hand, exits.
lol well said.
wow = 13 bucks a month-- very cheap night at the movies ie not even any boose in the theatre.
game = ~50 bucks and an anti social dead end when you are done.
200 bucks a month in savings = leasing a car, a very nice vaction at the end of the year for 2, read tropical paradise for 2 weeks, all included, 5 star. look at it this way, those games you were buying for 200 a month probably gave you ~2 weeks total playin time over the year, where would u rather be? (unless you are unemplyed, and therefore not in the 200 / mo on games equation)
even if you dont like cars and holidays, you can get a plasma or projection tv, a new wardrobe (so you dont have to goto those linux meetings in flip flops and a bedsheet).
2400 dollars will buy you a badass barbecue of the pimp persuasion. it will also buy you a decent hot tub.
compare all of these thigs to a playstation 2 with 50 old games, and the stupidity of the investment really starts to show. why do you think so many are into making cames now? the profit margin is huge. companies do not invest millions into video games because the think they are cool, they do it to make billions, off any sucker that will pay. this is why they want to outlaw 2nd hand sales, to prevent cheap sales, and so that their stuff does not look like the worthless crap it really is, once stripped of the hype.
even if you say that video games are your hobby it is no defense. if i had a hobby of collectign worthless software, i would wait till i could get it for cheap or free, l;ike buying that ps2 w 50 games for a couple hundred bucks tops. to rush out and pay tops dollar for every game when it comes out, just to feel like you are up to date or a part of soemthing screams luser. the only thing you are part of is yourself being ripped off.
thios is only gettin worse. the whole point of having a COMPUTOR is so that you can manipulate your own media, ie get rid of ads. if i wanted commercials i would go watch tv.
i hope more people realize that this is just headed to having all internet videos with commercials on them, without the user knowing what they are even getting.
this shit has to be left in the dust by everyone, or you wont recognize the internet in 15 years; it will be like digital cable, only with commercials.
hopefully people will keep writing software to prevent this from happening. i know google does have something in the pipe about searching images and even video, so its not too far fetched to have a program that searches and destroys unwanted ads.
as far as people being paid to post shit on the net? i dont care if it dries up. i like free video, with no ads, if you cant do that then you can find another line of work or fuck off and die. i didt tell you to be in this business, and i dont want what you are selling. if you dont provide ad free video i can get it from tons of other places
i already dont like google video because it doesnt let you right click and save their stuff. now there is going to be more drm and commercials? i think my response is clear: and the horse you rode in on.
there are many arguments you can make here.
citing some arcane study may not have the impact you are looking for.
cost benefit analysis is what a company wants to see
so you argument should be
cost: 0 , monitor was discarded
benefit 1: "This has made it much easier to do my job"
benefit 2: if work is easier, i should be able to do more of it in the same time frame
argument 1: even if its only a 1% increase in productivity it is worth it, because the monitor cost 0
argument 2: this is also a perfect oportunity to study the benefits of addtional monitors, and possibly decide if purchasing them are worth it also
argument 3: CSI has tons of monitors, and they always get the job done in less than an hour
argument 4: with 2 monitors i can actually do work, while waiting for a group in World of Warcraft
"It's the difference of cutting off oxygen as opposed to the bullet in the head," Vonage lawyer Roger Warin
cutting off the oxygen supply has long been a term used by management to describe a method of dealing with competition.
gun to the head references are more often used by unions (buzz hargrove comes to mind)
wudnt watch this with shitty macromedia flash or whatever it is. those idiots are trying to turn the internet into a tv.
how many people use msn? it cant be 10% usually when google doesnt find anything, I just rephrase the terms. dont ever remember thinking "i bet msn has it"

is was a rip off then, its a rip off now.
50$ in 1990 was a lot more than 70 bucks is now.
inflation?

piddler countries like spain can be bought easily, and their population whipped into line. it is highly unlikely that the people will ever see freedom there. but this threatens us all. there needs to be morre strict pre-emptive legislation that makes it a CRIME to lobby government to preserve industry agianst the wishes of the people. this would stop the aa's from trying to sneak bad laws into act every day, and would eliminate the need to constantly watch them. the penalty? why stiff fines, and a tax on every such proposal, to be distributed among the CONSUMERS of copyrighted works. for those lobbyists? an extended stay in a federal Pound Me In The Ass prison.
i think a lot shit we get here about china is to distract us from a very systemmatic, and calculated erosion of our rights here. better secure freedom in the usa before interfering with another unjust government.
this is despicable.
i hope these idiots get sued into oblvion.
how does an athletics director get to decide who can keep their scholarship anyway? arent scholarships created by donation to help worthy individuals? i seriously doubt that any of them ever say anything about having to do what you gym teacher says.
this policy is so obviously wrong its gonna fail in court fast. free speech anyone? protect the students? bullshit, it discriminates against certain types of students. how come this policy is only for atheletes, and not other members of the student body. it further discriminates against those who rely on scholarships (ie financially challenged) to enforce a policy that nobody else with money would even consider. in fact anyone with money would instantly sue if some idiot at a university (that they are paying the salary of) tried this.
i guess it just goes to prove the old saying : those who can, do. those who can't teach. those who can't teach, teach gym.
what a way to waste money. i remember vga cards used to be cheap also, and afterthought compared to the pc. now they are easily 10x the price, all because of hype. considering that these pad must cost tens of cents to make, i think the company has a good business plan no matter what i think.
"The timing is just happenstance"
sounds like you are lying.
nobody, i repeat, nobody just moves 37 billion on a whim or co-incidence.
there are even two statements in the story that show otherwise.
1 buffet and the gates' are close friends. buffets would have known about gates' resignation far sooner than anyone.
2 condition of buffet's donation is that the gates are involved in their foundation. wonder what they are planning.
now tell me again how this is judt happenstance. reminds me of the comedy "arthur" where he holds a sign saying "hey brother can you spare 750,000,000?"
now the question is not that it was planned, but why are they trying to hide it. history does not look too kindly on the charitable foundations of the ultra rich. many of them are little more than clever tax shelters. for the rich that do not like this comment, i will point out that the ultra weathy have historicslly been far more effective at amassing their fortunes, than creating charities that actually made any social impact. this is probably more about keeping the governemt's hands off this money.
want to wipe out aids? tb? oh shure lets set up a fancy society that says nice things. we can pay retail for these drugs, and the kickbacks will fly. why not buy a pharma company or 2, along with the ip to it. then give the drugs to those who need it. fyi tb is on the rise in the us, and prison popultaion has 5x the rate of tb infections. fighting tb indeed. for me, i'll belive in these foundations of the ultra rich when i see results. just moving money around does not impress me.
they are probably not lying.
do you thik some 5.15 $ per hour schmoe working at a cellphone retail outlet has any access to data?
or the operator of a telco?
you might as well go ask the janitor, since they are union, probably make more, and would have far better access to such information.
there is no possible reason a store cleark would be allowed near this info.
(unless you are unemplyed, and therefore not in the 200 / mo on games equation) even if you dont like cars and holidays, you can get a plasma or projection tv, a new wardrobe (so you dont have to goto those linux meetings in flip flops and a bedsheet). 2400 dollars will buy you a badass barbecue of the pimp persuasion. it will also buy you a decent hot tub. compare all of these thigs to a playstation 2 with 50 old games, and the stupidity of the investment really starts to show. why do you think so many are into making cames now? the profit margin is huge. companies do not invest millions into video games because the think they are cool, they do it to make billions, off any sucker that will pay. this is why they want to outlaw 2nd hand sales, to prevent cheap sales, and so that their stuff does not look like the worthless crap it really is, once stripped of the hype. even if you say that video games are your hobby it is no defense. if i had a hobby of collectign worthless software, i would wait till i could get it for cheap or free, l;ike buying that ps2 w 50 games for a couple hundred bucks tops. to rush out and pay tops dollar for every game when it comes out, just to feel like you are up to date or a part of soemthing screams luser. the only thing you are part of is yourself being ripped off.
screw google and these ads.
thios is only gettin worse. the whole point of having a COMPUTOR is so that you can manipulate your own media, ie get rid of ads. if i wanted commercials i would go watch tv.
i hope more people realize that this is just headed to having all internet videos with commercials on them, without the user knowing what they are even getting.
this shit has to be left in the dust by everyone, or you wont recognize the internet in 15 years; it will be like digital cable, only with commercials.
hopefully people will keep writing software to prevent this from happening. i know google does have something in the pipe about searching images and even video, so its not too far fetched to have a program that searches and destroys unwanted ads.
as far as people being paid to post shit on the net? i dont care if it dries up. i like free video, with no ads, if you cant do that then you can find another line of work or fuck off and die. i didt tell you to be in this business, and i dont want what you are selling. if you dont provide ad free video i can get it from tons of other places
i already dont like google video because it doesnt let you right click and save their stuff. now there is going to be more drm and commercials? i think my response is clear: and the horse you rode in on.
