Yep
Had the same here in Cardiff.
Guy thought Linux was strange and only used a snide copy of win2000.
When that died on him He asked me if I could get him a copy of Win2k to install.
I said no, I'll install Linux for his needs ( basically ebay!!) He's now stuck with a broken Win2k and no drivers for his old scanners.
He still complain a lot though!!!
You mustn't live in the west then.
They can look and seize your kit and keep it then return it with no explanation at all.
At least Amazon said Oooop's
This wont worry you till it's your turn, then you'll be looking to the minority slashdotters who really care!
I am a Linux user and now and again I have to help out the Vista members of the family.
I can't even find my way round the interface in vista!
Ubuntu is easier to install than windows, as it's quicker!
As regards help from forums, there is enough info for most people to learn the basics, as you did with windows at one point, and buy kit that will run Linux.
If you buy windows only kit (really cheap) then you'll have to run windows.
Most of the kit that's runs on Linux runs better on windows as well.
I'd say Linux is for more advanced users who have grown out of windows and lockin and now want to learn more about computers in general.
What about a button to power the dam things off
instead of waiting for it to maybe stop(windows)
I'm amazed this hasn't been done by the FLOSS people
who have less patience than me
HI
I see where your at on this, but must take this further.
As regards the moves from the Chuck Norris and co on TV/film, they at least show what happens when you kick/punch or head butt someone
I think things like 'Buffy the vampire slayer' are worse.
Although these programs don't show blood and guts, they also don't show the consequence's of kicking someone in the head
How many kids try this at school and really don't realise the damage they can do!
Cheers
Bob
Up Date re the above.
Thought I'd send an email re this:
HI
I have tried to buy the Flac version of the album.
When the box opens to buy I cannot see any text to fill in the fields.
This is using Firefox 3 on Ubuntu Linux.
Is the site only usable in IE?
Best regards

Mine came with that vista thing on, and it took ages to do anything at all including launching Firefox.
Yes it seemed to boot up quite quick but you still waited to actually use anything.
Also what about the time I spent clicking all the warnings allowing things I had no clue about to run on the pc.
Did you count this time in your daily use?
Also when they discontinue the drivers for your video card and you have to re-install,
off to some dodgy download driver website.
Ubuntu worked flawlessly on this box for the last year, and runs constantly faster all day.

Hi
Can't we use the solar and wind to make
HHO (browns gas I believe)
I cant find out how efficient this would be but you could produce the gas and store a months worth using it for hot water, heating , cooking.
This would relive the pressure on the alternative energy to light and power your home.
Actually if this worked out you could run a generator from the gas for when the solar and wind can't produce enough power.

Seems to be a strange situation as regards the infrastructure these days.
Look at Motorways (More car stuff!)
They were provided by the government before car use really warranted them. It was seen as a way of opening up parts of the UK to cars and people would move more. This is what happened.
We are now at that point with telco's.
The telco's rushed to lay the new cable and such to control the infrastructure and lock in customers but now we need to break this to allow faster speeds and more access to rural areas.
Hi
Re: '(I'm thinking P990i here)'
I have this pain for a phone here in the UK.
Where do I go to 'flash' this, and put something on that works!
Cheers
Bob
The problem here is that enough people believe in the 'figures' enough to make a whole industry out of.
Marketing seems to work if you have a big enough sample!
It's like soaps on TV, they churn over the same X million viewers so are considered a success
The other 48 million (uk) don't watch them and I would regard that as a failure.
Word of mouth is now becoming more powerfull as we have the web and can spread the word so much faster.
This is what film makers are finding out, that crap film would have done the rounds in the USA/UK and still got an audience, but now the mobile phone/forums are killing them at the start.
It's a big time of change for the marketing boys and girls
Bob
Yep
Problem solved!
If the engines all quit, there's to much ash!
Simples
Cheers
Ha!!
:
You beat me to it!!
Any Joe that leaves his/her PC on for months is
1 Running Linux anyway
2 Keeps the black hats away themselves
This is a good idea for the many people I talk to who will not use online banking.

I never get asked where is IE!

And what if you get the electricity from wind solar/wave to make storage of 'browns' gas. Works then

Linux costs the same wherever you get it!
DOH!
