I was pricing an entry level PC for my parents and the price for a good monitor almost swamped the price of a PC.
The incremental cost between a thin client and a full PC are small. The real cost savings is in the software.

a) take their PC to a repair shop
b) call their son in law to fix their PC.
c) throw out their PC.
Open Source Software is sometimes better (firefox vs IE).
Some commercial software is worth the price.
I used to fill out my taxes by hand until one tax retrun where I made a $500 error and it took me months to clear the issue.
The $40 is so worth it to me because of the saved time and better accuracy.

Firefox makes adaware pretty worthless. Whenever I miss the satisfying feeling from cleaning out spyware I just fire up IE and surf for a few minutes.
Over Xmas I did an spybot/virus scan/adaware on my girlfriend's mother's PC. 1300! spyware files and 15 trojans.
I asked her if she ever updated her PC when the microsoft shield blinked. She said she ignored that stuff.
That has to be some kind of record of spyware for a single user right?
One huge reason I chose not to buy an iPods for people versus other HDD players was the iTunes software. I would rather use file manager to move mp3s.
Also iPod doesn't support OGG.
With Myth TV on a pc you can then edit/burn/email shows/clips to people.
Also since the system is next to your stereo you might as well just play your mp3 collection.
Plus since most people have "extra" Pcs around you can use one old PC as a Myth box for cost savings.

I read that as 15+ days. I am pretty suree most plasma screens last that long.
