As the name suggests, artic silver contains a fair amount of silver in it. Silver, being a good conductor, could easily short out your socket if you're not extremely careful when you put it on.
Even using it with just a heat sink you have to be careful you don't use too much of it!
I remember back in college I had a 486/33 with a promise ide caching controller with 4MB on it. With Win 3.1, after the initial power on, I could reboot it and it would be up in windows in about 2-3 seconds without even accessing the hard drive. Oh how I loved that promise ide controller!
You do have a point there. If you're looking for a pet that'll greet you at the door and just love ya to death, a snake is a bad choice, as would be any reptile for that matter.
In my sophomore year of college, my roommate had a pet ball python and believe it or not, made for a pretty good companion while working on the computer. He'd stay up on my shoulder, or on my arm, perfectly content to watch me work away. And before someone asks, he never tried to strangle me! *grin* The snake was about 3' long, and from what I remember my roommate saying, they don't get all that much bigger than that. And taking care of it was a breeze. Just make sure it has a clean cage and give it a mouse once or twice a month. And for those that are really adventerous, let a mouse loose in the living room and watch the snake hunt it down! Just be sure not to bother the snake while it's feeding, it does NOT like that!
Of course now, I have a springer spanial, but only because my wife HATES snakes.
Not available to people in Washington???

Did anybody else notice on the signup page for lindows that it's not available if you live in Washington state?? I'm assuming that has to do something with Microsoft, but not sure what...anybody have any ideas on that??
Actually, if you use distilled water, you don't have much to worry about. Distilled water is a very poor conductor. If you were to use tap water(which has salt, among other minerals in it) then you'd be in some danger. It's the minerals that make water a conductor(albeit, a pretty poor conductor at that).
Ya know, allthough it would be dangerous, it would sure look pretty cool with arcs traveling across the space station. Sorta like something just that time traveled from the future! *grin*
Am I the only one who finds this statement on the second page of the article funny??
"When performance does become important, various techniques are available that can make dramatic differences in speed. For example, Microsoft Corp. has rewritten the Nile benchmark we used in these tests..."
So that's how you get the big speed, to hell with the application, rewrite the benchmark itself! *grin*
Actually, you can get Netscape, along with a lot of other software from Compaq. I don't have the web addy handy, but do a search on Compaq's webpage for Alpha Power Tools and you should be able to find it.
The only problem I think I'll have with Tru64 is my Adaptec 2940. From what I've read, Tru64 doesn't support any of the Adaptec cards. Luckily, only my zip and jaz are on that.
Oh, there is one other thing. I know I need SRM with Tru64(I'm using AlphaBIOS for the dual boot with NT). I know there's a way I can switch between the two without loosing the other, but haven't found any clear info on how to do that. Anybody know of how to do this??
About a year ago I got a 21164 533MHz for personal use. It has been the best machine I have ever had! The only time it is ever rebooted is when my wife wants to get into NT(ugh, still working on getting her to use Linux) and it hasn't been power cycled since I first installed it(especially thanks to a UPS:) Granted, it can be harder to find apps for Alphalinux, but I've been able to find everything I need for it and it all runs really quick! What I really like about it is, that I can run pretty much any hardware that works on a normal PC. I have a zip, jaz and cd-rw in it with 256MB of standard RAM(I know some older Alphas require special memory).
The only problem I've come across is getting em86 running on it, but so far I haven't really needed it.
And someday, when I have the time(and courage) I'm going to try to install True64 on it.
I've been looking at adding wireless ethernet to my home as well, and from what research I've done, I think I'm going with the Orinoco RG-1000. But I do have a couple questions about this that maybe someone can help me with.
First, what kind of drivers are there for linux?? Are they opensource drivers??
And second, I have a Zyxel Prestige 310 hooked up to my cable modem that I use for NAT/Firewall/etc. Can I use the RG-1000 with my existing ethernet and still have the Zyxel handle all the router stuff?? Basically, I just want to add some wireless nodes to my network without changing anything else.
Actually, if the cable snapped anywhere in the Earth's atmosphere, you'd be shot into space like a slingshot I'd suspect. In the article they mention having something like an asteroid outside of a GEO orbit to make the balance point the space station itself(to offset the weight of the cable). So if the cable snapped, the center of gravity would be put past the space station and I would think the asteroid would pull everything into space.
They may have won the case, but DeCSS is already out there on countless websites. Granted, it may be illegal to have now, but that doesn't mean people are going to stop using it.
In actuallity, this may be a good thing. Maybe it will show the powers that be exactly what the internet can and will do. No amount of legislation is going to be able to control what is out there.
Since AMD and Intel are each making their own instruction set for 64bit, does that mean that software will have to be written for both?? Or is there going to be some compatability layer that allows AMD chips to run Intel code and vice versa??
I think the point MS is making is that it comes down to who's doing the support. When you buy a computer with a OEM copy of windows, the company you bought the computer from is responsible for the support. But when you buy it through this select license, MS is responsible for the support.
So I can see where MS is coming from here. But I think if they're going to be doing this, they need to allow vendors to sell computers without the OS.
Actually, yahoo can do what they want with your email, including letting anybody they want read it. Since it's on servers they own, technically, they own all the email, even users private email. Just like at work, you're employer has rights to read and do what they want with your email since it's on their equipment.
It's really quite simple if you think about it. You see, you take clothes out of the washing machine and put them in dryer. Well, when they dryer is done you have a lint trap to clean out, and since the clothes just came out of the washer clean, there shouldn't be any lint. Therefore, the lost socks become lint in the dryer and get caught in the lint trap!
I have a a Zyxel Prestige 310 with my cable modem(supposed to work with DSL as well) and I love it! Not one problem with it, and very configurable. I think I got mine on special for $200, but they're normally around $300. Check out www.zyxel.com for more info on it.
OK, I got onto Redhat's ftp site and am wanting to get the ISO for 6.2. In the ISO directory I notice this zoot-doc.iso. Does this mean they have a cd's worth of documentation?????(it's >600MB)
Don't laugh, this has happened before. Rember this.
the internet pr0n industry. Instead of just seeing it, you can feel your pr0n too.
;)
Think about it, you know you wanna try it
Now with all the linking on slashdot to .mil sites, I can see the military thinking it's a huge DDOS terrorist attack!
Now repeat after me...I will not slashdot military websites...:)

So, are you saying being around a 4600lb magnet is birth control, or being a big enough geek to have a 4600lb magnet is the birth control??

You can find them in the comp.dcom.modems.cable newsgroup. I just checked (I use supernews) and they're still there.
