    It'd work WELL for things like left 4 dead, where that bloody film grain makes an appearance. Turn it way up for the horror games, save the important cycles for A.I. or mass zombie hordes :)

    Or leave it on for the ultimate A.I. experience, where your teammates just randomly shoot you in the head - I guarantee it'll pass the gaming turing test.

    Sorry, I knew the context, but assumed nobody would bother with editing BOOKS on a PHONE. He mentioned that this was OT, and also Macwrite 1.0 which has nothing to do with iPhones. Now I think about it, I'm not sorry at all, that was a kneejerk reaction... for which I must apologise.

    I make no assumptions about slashdot readers these days. They come from everywhere.

    You crazy bastard, here it is. I've had it for ages, oohed and aaahed at it for a while with the bookmarks and whatnot, and promptly ignored it. I don't do much with text files. Turned the sound off, and it's really quite pleasant. I don't know if it can open a text file at the same place you closed it, but everything else seems fine.

    This is such old news that one of my favourite books, Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome, has already covered it. Published in 1889, and required reading for anyone with a sense of humour.

    Regarding the shift, it's just a question of compatibility. Accounting software, tricky little apps that log your calls... we can't guarantee any of this under linux, and it's still cheaper for the customer to pay for and train themselves to use Vista rather than pay for ridiculous amounts of support time just to get their applications running. If their applications won't work under Vista, then they might find themselves facing a choice, but that's only the case with older unsupported apps now.

    As somebody on the internet once said, "Linux is free if your time is worth nothing."

    D-Link is Shit. Buy Linksys.

    That's fascinating. I have learned exactly the opposite. There are huge batches of crappy products for each vendor that come out in waves, IMHO. Most of the Linksys routers we sold broke around the same time and drove us back to D-Link.

    If you're curious about how such a situation could arise, I suggest looking to season 4 of Married... With Children for the answer.     Yes, printers. If someone has a USB printer they need to share, I'd much rather serve it from their virtual server with any stupid software it requires. Hardware print servers and compatibility make me cry.

    Interesting - sounds like a bit of Catch-22. If you haven't read the book, it is set in Italy during WW2. All the bomber crews want to go home, but the easiest way out is to plead insanity. You also have to request to be sent home, but doing so implies sanity, nullifying your eligibility. Great book.

    That seems accurate enough. Was there another election in 2004?

    Perhaps the search engine should parse the more 'colourful' wording/spelling or colloquialisms in the questions to help narrow down the results.
