Even as a Democrat, I am getting very tired of our ever expanding Government. However, requiring critical systems like power and transportation etc... to have upgraded security is kind of a no-brainer.
Actually, when they say "those businesses managing systems whose disruption could prove detrimental to critical life-sustaining or national-security initiatives." I think they are referring to iTunes, Amazon, Facebook, etc./sarcasm
Weel, it seems like Symantec isn't really telling the truth about PCAnywhere not posing a threat to its customers. A quote from this Feb 1, 2012 article:
Last week, the company took the highly unusual step of telling pcAnywhere users to disable the program based on a 2006 source code leak and this month's claims by members of Anonymous that they were mining the stolen code for vulnerabilities.
Symantec spokesman Brian Modena declined to declare the now-patched pcAnywhere as safe to use when asked that question multiple times, but hinted that the fixes the company has released were sufficient.
So I guess that if you patched your version of PCAnywhere then you're safe according to Symantec.
I have some hope that Apple will open up some more under Cook.
It would actually be interesting to hear more about what Tim Cook is, umm, cooking. After Jobs passed away, I don't remember seeing any Cook news in Slashdot, for example.
That's because people don't hate Cook... yet. I'm sure as soon as he does one thing that Apple haters don't like they will wish upon him the same fate as Jobs.
As part of the DNSChanger botnet takedown, the feds secured a court order to replace the Trojan's DNS infrastructure with surrogate, legitimate DNS servers. But those servers are only allowed to operate until March 8, 2012. Unless the court extends that order, any computers still infected with DNSChanger may no longer be able to browse the Web.
Maybe loss of service will finally motivate owners/managers to clean up the problem.
You're right. The only way that most of these companies or government agencies will even realize that they are infected/affected will be when some of their PC's stop working properly.
Why would I want to have an employer with that kind of approach and attitude to managing employees?
Don't worry, before too long these simulators will be used to measure the ability of robots to fill the job instead of humans. Then we'll really be able to "take the human out of hiring".
The questionnaire was a Foxconn job application. He's certified to work on the low-light factory floor which is under development so the employees won't really be able to see how bad they have it./sarcasm
Keep in mind that we're assuming any "ET's" out there are on par with our technology. What if they're just like us, except around 100 years behind us technologically. They won't be listening to the skies. They'll be watching a silent movie about A Trip to the Moon.
Just like everything else in life timing is everything.
Other than that, with around 20-something days/year of leave entitlement, living there should be nice, because:
I'm sorry to be the one who has to tell you this, but the entire duration of the trip will be counted against your current and future vacation time. Plus, you'll have to pay for your own travel expenses. Welcome to the new world order.
Use a Blackberry. Lack of apps aside, even if the malware authors want to code one, the antiquate API would drive them to whiskey abuse.
Use a BlackBerry? But how will I get my "totallies freez and safes, I promizz" LOL Catz knockoff? My phone wants catz that wantz cheezeburgerz, and I don't want to spend $1 to do it!
How will they validate that the employee that was turned in really vandalized the data? Witch hunt?
Who knows. And how do they prevent someone from offering up an innocent (either as a joke or as a calculated move)? The world has changed. First there were bug bounties, which made sense. Now there's a bounty to identify accused vandals. Next there will be serious (and dangerous) bounties on spammers, anonymous bloggers, and who knows who else. And after that? A bounty on more than just their names? Bounties on the heads of members of Anonymous?
That slippery slope people keep clamoring about? I think were about to find out if they were right.
If they can keep this GMO sequestered in a watertight tank and remember that it could possibly destroy the ocean it would help the population of the world. It's sort of silly, however, that they spent all those resources creating this GMO when hemp is a very common and old source for ethanol. But nooo, we don't want to upset the fine folks at Dow, Goodyear, or Monsanto do we. Let's forget hemp and create a new organism.
I'm sure that if we could introduce those fine folks to hemp... or it's cousin 'weed'... they would be much more amenable to growing it themselves for industrial purposes. Hell, if we threw in a bunch of cookies and milk they may even stop being evil for a few hours.
If the pacemaker vendor doesn't want to make the source code available its perfectly within its right to refuse to supply the pacemaker. Lawyer can go look for someone else to acquiesce to her ridiculous demand, assuming she doesn't die waiting for someone to give in, but any delay is entirely of her own creation.
If she wants to review the code, with the implication that she can somehow improve it, let her buy the pacemaker, root it, write her own software and live (or die) with the results.
I'm just saying it may not be wise to take sides. It could alienate customers, potential talent and government support.
Lose customers because of a pro gay marriage position? Where are these customers going to run off to? Potential talent may think twice, but I doubt most people looking for a job are going to care enough to skip a gigantic company due to this political issue. And government support? Where else is the government going to go? They're scared of Linux and don't think about Apple, so it's Windows or bust.
I know as a developer who uses MS products I don't want to get dragged into a social debate when all I care about it the technology.
If your customers are going to squawk to you about things MS are doing then there's nothing you can really say or do. MS has done enough evil. Have you been dragged into the social debate about those deeds?
So.... should I get the vaccine, or just continue panicking?
It's so hard to choose between manufactured fear, and placebo relief.
Feel free to do both. Getting the vaccine doesn't help prevent panicking (about this variation of the flu, any variation of the flu, or anything else for that matter).;-)
The problem with pulling out of India is that, eventually, the issue will be resolved. By then, other companies will have taken over in place of Google, Facebook, etc.
Isn't it prudent to pull out of India if the costs (financial and freedom) to continue doing business there are so dire? Who cares if they can't show ads to those people who are being censored? Once the content police are done polishing the content of the entire internet they'll start telling Google, FB, etc what ads they can sell and how they should look, etc.
does the DHS even have the necessary expertise in IT security ?
Of course not. What a silly question.
Understanding something is not a requirement for supervising it. Ask your boss.
I take it we're using the customer service skills of the TSA as an example of DHS's practical application of their lack of knowledge? ;-)

The spirit to take risks is the spirit of adventure.
Could you please rephrase that using an analogy including Rock, Paper, Scissors?
Hands up all those people who didn't already realise that's what it meant.
I thought they were laying a trap so the next time an author republished the work Apple could sue them. /sarcasm
If Anonymous can listen to FBI calls then they'll certainly know when the FBI will be coming to kick down their door.
This will really piss off the FBI and it will be the political motivation for the FBI to pull out all the stops to find members of Anonymous.

If they could receive our signals, why aren't we receiving theirs?
Because by now they've received broadcasts of the original Star Trek series and don't want William Shatner to find them.
Assuming average density the same as Earth ...
The planet's solar system has much lower abundances of heavy elements and therefore will probably not have the same density as Earth.

I wonder if they're hiring? Certainly they'll treat their employees better than they do their product, um, customers. Right?

Is that of a pimp to his prostitutes.
I think I had that question on my SAT's.
Small studios produce a title every few years. With the cost of keeping their hardware current this option makes a lot of sense for them.
