I never said I didn't like freeciv, I just think most of the freeciv devs are assholes. I think the game could be much better if they didn't squabble between each other about design changes and would take the advice of the people who acctually play the game. The devs don't even play do they?

  2. Open source isn't so high and mighty... on Freeciv-2.0.0 Stable Released · · Score: -1

You guys talk about commerical games being so bland and unoriginal in comparison to open source but in reality all open source people do is make poor imitations of old commercial games. BZflag = battlezone, freeciv = civ, wesnoth = one of the billion hex games out there. At least the commercial people are payed and therefore make good new games using new technology to keep it interesting. Besides the Freeciv devs are assholes.

It's the retards in college taking arts, smoking weed every night they aren't piss drunk kind of people that buy games. they will buy the most shiney endorsed package they can find even if the game sucks; they want to know they're playing something cool, not something that has really well thought out gameplay. Besides you aren't giving the big companies enough credit, indie games don't have a chance in matching either quality or pretty much any other aspect. It's like saying people should use gimp instead of photoshop because it's open source... another brainless argument.

    BILL
There was a dream that was Windows. I can only whisper of it now. Anything more than a whisper and the dream vanishes. It's so... fragile. The true glory of Windows is in a very fragile idea. Imagine a place devoted to the rights of the citizen. Where every free man has a voice. That was the dream... And I fear it will not survive the winter.

He holds out a hand to Linus. Linus takes his hand, deeply moved, kneeling.

    BILL
Let's just whisper here, you and I.

    LINUS
    Yes, Dev.

    BILL
If the dream is ever to live again the people must have a true voice. The voice I took from them. That all the Devs took from them, bit by bit, conquest by conquest. And now that I am dying I am going to give them that voice again.

    LINUS
    You're not dying.

    BILL
I am, Linus. It's strange... I find as I near the end I think little of the waning moments around me... instead I think much of the past... and of the future. How will the world speak my name in years to come? Will I be known as the philosopher? The warrior? The
tyrant? Or will there be a more golden sounding to my name? Will I be the Emperor who gave Windows back her freedom?

    A beat.

    BILL
Before I die I will give the people this final gift. I will give them the Linux reborn. The voice of the people empowered again, as it was always meant to be. It is my design that they will elect the next Emperor. And I would put forward your name with my backing.

    LINUS
Dev, you do me honor -- but your son has pride of place for succession.

    BILL
You are the son I should have had...Although I fear in my deepest heart that if you had truly been my son my blood would have polluted you as it did Commodus. We're a cursed bloodline. We have lived so long in power and depravity that we nolonger remember a life without it. We can no longer even imagine a life without it.

    A beat.

    BILL
    Look at me, son.

    Linus looks at him.

    BILL
Son... I know that one grove of your vineyard is worth more to you than all the treasures of Windows. I know one loving word from your wife is worth more than the accolades of an Empire. But... a fond old man, who loves you more than he can say, begs you to at least think about what he has said tonight.

    LINUS
    I shall, Dev.

    A beat.

    BILL
I'll keep this letter to myself. I hope that with the sunrise you will agree. And embrace me as a father.

Linus nods and rises. He begins to go. Stops.

    LINUS
You have always been my father.

    He goes.

Acctually... most you CAN buy. They probably make more money on selling DVDs then when they acctually air the show! I download House and Stargate every week off btefnet; I already get Fox so nothing wrong with downloading House to watch when I feel like it, and Stargate because you can't get sci-fi or skyone in Canada so I wouldn't get to see new episodes for a gazillion years... bou hou hou. "In the past, such efforts typically failed if the show's ratings didn't generate enough ad revenue to cover costs. But the cancellation calculus is starting to change. Fox's "Family Guy," axed in 2002, is getting another chance on the air because sales of DVD collections of the show have been so hot. Indeed, fundamental shifts in how TV companies make money are starting to complicate cancellation decisions _ and small but dedicated groups of viewers are gaining newfound clout. Of course, audience size still matters a lot in prime-time network television. But now other factors are influencing the cancellation decision. DVDs have become such a gold mine _ profit margins reach 50 percent _ that broadcasters are increasingly open to the idea of keeping a ratings-challenged show on the air, especially one with a fanatical core of fans, in order to generate more episodes to sell later on DVD. Other nascent income streams _ on-demand services, and downloadable episodes sold on the Internet like songs _ also are giving consumers more direct power in programming decisions." Blah I give up; like CNN is biased towards mericans, slashdot is biased towards code hugging programmers... If the programmer works for anyone besides Microsoft, they'll get treated like holy angels who can be excused for ANY mistake, no matter how preventable, but if they DO work for Microsoft, ANY mistake they make is treated like an unforgivable stupidity. The least the moderators could do is be as objective as possible when posting a story; journalists are supposed to show more than one perspective of a story.
