    it's not meant to prevent theft of new Apple products, it's meant to shut out 3rd party repair places

    And in the case of John Deere, farmers are turning to technicians with cracked Ukrainian John Deere software that they bought off the black market

    The Apple System Configuration Suite software is cloud authenticated:

    The AST 2 System Configuration suite is a diagnostic software that Apple uses to ensure that the computer is functioning properly. It includes the Mac Resource Inspector, which does a “quick health check of hardware and software,” as well as tools that check the system’s memory, display, power adapters, cooling system, and other aspects of the computer. It functions only if connected to Apple’s Global Service Exchange (GSX), a Cloud-based server that Apple uses to handle repairs and service. It requires a login from Apple to access.

    But if there's a thriving black market of John Deere tractor hacking, I find it hard to believe that such a move on Apple's part won't spawn an equivalent surge in hacked Apple System Configuration Suites.

    They can try to log in with the wrong IP address, device profile or browser fingerprint for the account, and then be put through a few hours of the game 'do you recognise these dark, grainy, blurry pictures of your friends?'

    Alternatively they could fail the 2FA SMS check.

    It never made any sense to me why you would pay for hardware just to loose your privacy.

    If you choose the Chromebook c201, it can increase your privacy since it can run libreboot to replace the Intel ME. The firmware is protected by a physical screw so it can be software flashed. Then it can run Debian, Devuan, Parabola etc.

    Yet... Trump's tweet has achieved its goal.

    Up until his tweet today, Google's first page of results for 'Trump News' did indeed return 'only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media.'

    But since Trump's tweet that crucial first page is now 100% news about his tweet, replacing the voice of the news with noise from Trump.

    It's open-source, therefore it can be forked.

    And according to Kodi, forks must be re-branded.

    The XBMC Foundation requires that all forks of Kodi/XBMC must be rebranded, unless otherwise granted permission from the XBMC Foundation. In other words, they cannot be called Kodi or XBMC, and may not include the Kodi or XBMC logos, graphics, or other trademarks.

    So let Facebook ban Kodi. Then sit back and watch as they play whack-a-mole with the many compulsorily re-branded variations of the software.

    It's Machine Learnings. So...

    step one: gather information about everything the user does on the computer
    step two: broadcast that information back to MS HQ (because the ML happens in the 'cloud')
    step three: if anyone's still annoyed, blame the lack of ML input data, and increase step one.
