The Apple System Configuration Suite software is cloud authenticated:
The AST 2 System Configuration suite is a diagnostic software that Apple uses to ensure that the computer is functioning properly. It includes the Mac Resource Inspector, which does a “quick health check of hardware and software,” as well as tools that check the system’s memory, display, power adapters, cooling system, and other aspects of the computer. It functions only if connected to Apple’s Global Service Exchange (GSX), a Cloud-based server that Apple uses to handle repairs and service. It requires a login from Apple to access.
But if there's a thriving black market of John Deere tractor hacking, I find it hard to believe that such a move on Apple's part won't spawn an equivalent surge in hacked Apple System Configuration Suites.
what the heck anyone would really do with a stolen login to the place
They can try to log in with the wrong IP address, device profile or browser fingerprint for the account, and then be put through a few hours of the game 'do you recognise these dark, grainy, blurry pictures of your friends?'
Obtaining a thing of value (product or service) by intentionally providing false information would be Fraudulent misrepresentation. Claiming you'd forgotten your own name might reduce it to Negligent misrepresentation.
This took place in Singapore and, as anyone who's ever worked in Singapore knows, almost everything is illegal and punishable by fines, canings, beatings or imprisonment. The authorities fine you $500 for carrying a Durian fruit on the subway...
In other news, Android users are mysteriously finding their Location Services and Google history settings turned to the 'on' position, even if they had previously manually turned them off./s
Location settings are not under Location Services or Google history. They're in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'.
It never made any sense to me why you would pay for hardware just to loose your privacy.
If you choose the Chromebook c201, it can increase your privacy since it can run libreboot to replace the Intel ME. The firmware is protected by a physical screw so it can be software flashed. Then it can run Debian, Devuan, Parabola etc.
The XBMC Foundation requires that all forks of Kodi/XBMC must be rebranded, unless otherwise granted permission from the XBMC Foundation. In other words, they cannot be called Kodi or XBMC, and may not include the Kodi or XBMC logos, graphics, or other trademarks.
So let Facebook ban Kodi. Then sit back and watch as they play whack-a-mole with the many compulsorily re-branded variations of the software.
Everyone I know has moved to wire.app. Encrypted text, voice & video. Not tied to a phone number. Works on win, mac, linux, android, ios. Free. Open source.
step one: gather information about everything the user does on the computer
step two: broadcast that information back to MS HQ (because the ML happens in the 'cloud')
step three: if anyone's still annoyed, blame the lack of ML input data, and increase step one.
it's not meant to prevent theft of new Apple products, it's meant to shut out 3rd party repair places
And in the case of John Deere, farmers are turning to technicians with cracked Ukrainian John Deere software that they bought off the black market

Then we could have non-techies doing really stupid things like asking if Office 2019 needs WiFi 2019 to work properly.
Or techies asking if WiFi 2019 needs Kali 2019 to penetrate properly.

Bring on the Coke-branded right booster
Then look no further than the Pepsi Concorde.
Before you start frantically googling, yes it's real.
In the preface to "The Picture of Dorian Gray" Oscar Wilde proclaimed "all art is quite useless."
Yet some art remains pretty damn valuable.

So an @protonmail.com address would be undesirable? @protonmail.ch even less so?
I'm not an ambi-turner. It's a problem I had since I was a baby. I can't turn left.
Yet... Trump's tweet has achieved its goal.
Up until his tweet today, Google's first page of results for 'Trump News' did indeed return 'only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media.'
But since Trump's tweet that crucial first page is now 100% news about his tweet, replacing the voice of the news with noise from Trump.
The UK still has a fully operational 2G network.
The only way to achieve a steady stable NTRIP connection here is with 2G.
Truth isn't truth.
Haven't you heard?
Kodi as an open-source media platform
It's open-source, therefore it can be forked.
And according to Kodi, forks must be re-branded.

Can't imagine anyone on slashdot voluntarily wants to use dropbox.
It's clients who want to use it so we must install that godforsaken crap to deal with them.
Now Linux support's dropped, we finally have a valid reason to tell clients their hideous ecosystem is incompatible with our OS.
Everyone I know has moved to wire.app. Encrypted text, voice & video. Not tied to a phone number. Works on win, mac, linux, android, ios. Free. Open source.
Slashdot readers know how to bypass a paywall. I mean, c'mon.
And for the Slashdot readers who don't know how to bypass a paywall: Facebook to Banks: Give Us Your Data, We’ll Give You Our Users unlocked
I've yet to meet one person who has said, "what this phone needs is a notch".
Yet... now that Google's banned them, I really want a three-notch phone.
It's Machine Learnings. So...
step one: gather information about everything the user does on the computer
step two: broadcast that information back to MS HQ (because the ML happens in the 'cloud')
step three: if anyone's still annoyed, blame the lack of ML input data, and increase step one.
This could get ugly...someone might actually get a warning not to do it again!
Even less than that. I prefer The Register's way of putting it:
UK spies broke law for 15 years, but what can you do? shrugs judge. Appeal against my latest judgment? Oh wait, you can't!
