I watched He-Man, Superman, GI-Joe. All these shows had one thing in common all problembs were resolved through violence. Something bad is happening quick get my gun/sword/kneck-punch-fist, that's what I learned by watching these shows. Hey you know what my mom did when I broke my brother's arm playing "WWF" steal cage match in our backyard? She grounded me. Funny I got the blame, I had to take responsibility for my actions. I wonder what would of happened if she sewed the "WWF" instead?

Raise your kids teach them to take responsibility fo their actions. The truth is most parrents do a great/good job of this. Unfortunatly only the ones that are bad at it make the news.

I'm not atheist, but I also haven't been to church in a long time... like a decade or so, and I'm just 27 years old. I'm not a big fan of it if you couldn't tell. Just last night I had to go online to look up "The Lords Prayer" to argue a point... I lost. But I totally agree with the parent's statement, I'm against prayer in public school, putting the Ten Commandments on state property(though I don't object to them being placed in a "public" space), pro choice. Despite all that I'm still going to send my child to religious classes(not school). Despite all my problems with the church, and the doubts I have about my own faith, I owe a lot to my Roman Catholic upbringing. That being said my biggest gripe with organized religions, particularly that of the Christian/Catholic variety, are the people that got to church go through the motions, and treat people in a (as my dad would put it) unchristian manner. That always pissed me off, the lessons

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"

"Judge not lest ye be judged yourself"

"Render unto Cesar the things that are Caesar; and to God, the things that are God's"

"Forgive us our tresspases as we forgive those that tresspass against us"

These were the foundation of my faith and the cornerstone of almost every relationship I have personal, professional, and otherwise. I'm from NY raised by New England "Blue Staters" that vote it seems to me that where a community focuses on religiously seems to dictate their political views. In NY it was the love/help thy neighbor, I'm in Miami now, and the focus seems to be a lot more

"Thou shall not, or go to hell!"

It's weird down here, jail is the answer to our "problems"... the word "problems" seems to be interchangeable with lower class/immigrants/minorities. Greed and fear seem to prevail, what's the harm in letting Cuban refugee's in? Actually compared to Hetians they have it easy... Darker skinned people scare WASP's... it's part of the definition of being a WASP. The good news is that we have highly intelligent people running the show here. It makes total sense to me that we should lower taxes on those with the most(myself included), to cut programs that help those who need the most help. Public schools suck down here, and it's not going to change because everyone "protects their own". I was a huge fan of public schooling when I lived in New England, I'll be damned before I send my kid to one of the "baby-momma" factories they call a school down here. I also refuse to ask for a tax credit just because I'm paying for my kid to go to private school. A ways north of here is the home of TBN the "Trinity Broadcast Network"... how does that song go?

"Would Jesus wear a Rolex on his television show?"

This place needs a spiritual revival... big time. I see a lot more "Sunday Christians" down here. The type that would take money from someone who truly needs it, just to line their pockets just "cause they can", have the nerve to tell you about it, and then ask.

    "What church you go to?"

It never seemed that way in NY... maybe because going to church is more of "the thing to do" down here, and up in NY most people that went to church did so out of honest belief. I had a faith once, but I didn't want to be associated with a lot of the people that call themselves faithful. I don't know man I'm just ranting this subject always gets me riled up.

Long and the short of it is I agreed with you.

You make a good point, but this isn't what they are trying to address, they are trying to address the fact that Windows comes in one flavor with one set of libraries... meaning that compared to Linux it's the
MS Windows is the Dedicated-Console to Linux's PC-Box.

We all know the story already, but one more time can't hurt right?... With a Dedicated-Console the developer knows every piece of hardware on that console, With a PC-Box the developer has no clue what the end customer is going to have in their PC, and therefor has to either make compromises to get it to work on the widest array of PC's / or go for just the higher-end and alienate customers. Each option Dedicated-Console, or PC-Box has its advantages but as a developer I could tell you which one I'd prefer to write for.

A developer can program for Windows and have a guaranteed set of MS sanctioned, and maintained libraries to use on any Windows box bought off the self, or program for "Linux", and hope that the distro/user has put the libraries that you use on that box already. Or force your users to hunt them down themselves.

This may change in the In the upcoming 12 versions of Vista era, but so far MS has given developers one platform to program for when they program for "Windows". When they programing for "Linux", they have to assume that nothing is there, or they risk there program working incorrectly/not-at-all, as anyone who's installed a program that required dependencies, that are no longer easily found, or poorly documented can attest to. Windows/OSX aren't like that, they have 1 OS with tops 2-3 very similar flavors, to program for not 1 OS with 100+ different variations, and lord knows what screwball eccentricities.

In response to MS's use of Direct X some one suggested that SDL and OpenGL would be a good replacement for it(Direct X). But how would I as a developer know that a consumer purchasing my product had those libraries installed? That is the problem that these guys are trying to solve.

They are trying to make DISTRIBUTING a program for "Linux" across Linux flavors as easy as it is to distribute programs for "Windows". Linux needs this if it's going to go mainstream. I hope it takes off.

"Linux sucks because it has poor driver support."

I admit it's usualy not stated this clearly, but when the topic is Linux uptake and someone says
"the problem with Linux is poor XXX support"

it's understood that "Linux" means "Linux adoption"

I see it a lot here, and I hope you realize that what he's saying is absolutely correct. I love the ideals behind open source, and I use a ton of Open Source software OO.o, Gostscript & PDFCreator, OpenVPN, UltraVNC, ect. And because of my admittedly stellar experiences with each and every one of those programs I've tried to switch to an Open Source OS. I've installed, and uninstalled Linux at least 20 times, and getting the system to a state I'm comfortable with is nie impossible. I understand that it's not Linux's fault that Ati, and nVidia wont open source their drivers. I realize that Broadcom is a bunch of a-holes, and won't release Linux drivers so I will forever have to use NDIS wrapper to get my wireless card to work on my m6805. Myself and a good number of people here on /. understand that yes it's not a problem with Linux, when drivers don't work/aren't available.

You have to concede that regardless of who's fault it is, the fact that I as a user, can't grab a wireless card, video card, ect. off the shelf from my local CompUSA slap it in my PC, stick plop in the install disk, and just in sit back and wait a few minutes for the install to complete, as I would on any Windows box, is a hindrance to Linux UPTAKE, though not an indication of a problem with Linux itself.

To summarize, when we're talking about Linux adoption, and a poster says.
"the problem with Linux is poor XXX support"

Doesn't mean they don't realize that it's really a problem with vendors themselves, and that Linux as an OS is a success. It means that.

Pretending they're not, and telling them something they're already aware of is a waste of time and frustrating. I like it when I get replies to posts, it's frustrating however when the reply is intelligent well thought out, and is of no interest to me because I have to nit-pick semantics. You're not at a help-desk here, assume intelligence.
