  1. Stickers on Cherry Announces Linux keyboard · · Score: 2, Interesting

A lot of keyboards just use permanent stickers for special keys. This way they only have to make one keyboard and then they ship it to mulitple countries. Why not just leave the stickers off the extra keys and supply sets for the user to put them on?

At least to a US economy. It won't shock me if it turns out to be a hoax, but it probably scares some people that it might not be. This could be the basis for a push to the "raid the compound" stage instead of less aggressive measures. If the invention is not snake oil, the crude oil industry would like to know before it's released. I'm not screaming conspiracy, but it's realistic that people in oil would nudge investors and the govt. in this direction. "Hey, don't you want to know what he's doing with all that money?"

Just suppose for a moment that he stumbled on easy cold fusion, and then actually started to produce a product. Then release the details the day before the product ships. There is no time for FUD, and the economy could go into a tail spin. People doubting the value of cars, oil, etc. I'm all for free energy, but don't start a fire under a snow covered tree.

Desktop domination comes from shipping the OS installed on OEM systems. It could be a worthless peice of tripe, but if Dell/HP/Gateway ships it, it's mainstream. Unlike a picture frame, people just use what comes inside their machine.

  5. The Installation Issue. on Lycoris Build 71 Beckons For Your Desktop · · Score: 5, Interesting

For those of you saying that "Linux won't work for the desktop until my grandma can install it.", please remember your grandma can't install Windows either. Being mainstream is not about how easy it is to install. It's about being OEM installed by major retailers. Most people never install a version of Windows from scratch. The upgrade releases are usually easy, but you get driver and dependancy problems sometimes. This is especially true of the NT/2000/XP line. I find that anyone who can run Windows preinstalled can run Linux preinstalled.

Forget the star/number/etc. rating and read the reviews. People that have actually used a product will have real comments about the good, bad, and ugly of it. Ignor reviewers that say "Wonder product! I am completely satisfied." or "Waist of money!". They don't tell you anything. Stuff like "The battery door broke after a few days, but the company Fed-Ex'ed me a new one.", or "Works great with Bob's widget.12.tgz drivers!.", give you actual information about what happened when they used the product. Judge for yourself how many stars they're worth.

Think about it, the current plain old telephone system is no good unless it is ubiquitous. That's why the telcos are in trouble. They needed to put entire systems in place before they where useful. Fiber is fantastic except when it comes down to two little wires in the last mile. In for a penny, in for a pound. Telecommunications systems need to be complete or not at all. What they are ticked off about was that they didn't see a market for "the television editon on DVD" first. If they shut down Clean Flicks, you can bet your @ they'll start put the TV version on Blockbusters family shelves. When it comes to the money scene, it's all about cutting out the middle man! :-)

The only thing the reviewer could complain about is that the fingerprinting alters the original. It sure beats listening to it on a walkman though.

The enterprise is best place to start combatting the desktop front. Linux makes a great desktop OS for most people once it's setup and configured to there needs. That's were the rub comes in. You needed an experienced admin to do that. If employees can come into work, sit down and click on an icon to get their email, they'll be happy. I don't want to hear flames about application x is not available, bla bla bla. The majority of business computer use is email, web, and office tools. Linux has all of those things functioning well enough for most people. The ones who gripe, are the same ones who will gripe about the changes from 2000 to XP anyway.

  14. What's all this about looks? on Home Entertainment PC Mod · · Score: 1

So your home entertainment systems looks like either a pc or a pile of stereo equipment. At least with a pc you have plenty of case options to match the room. It may still look like a pc, but as long as the feng shui is good, it works. Standards in pc hardware shape make adding and upgrading easier than a home stereo too. Try mixing and match different pieces of home entertainment equipment from different manufacturers. Sure most is a standard width and made to be somewhat stackable, but the front bezel's usually have designs that only match there particular manufacturers line. That is, if you go with black, the universal home stereo color. If not, your really in trouble. With a pc, just buy a case with front door. Then it doesn't matter that the dvd drive is a different color. It's also all in one clean, easy to manage, box. :-)

Ok, so it's slightly off-topic, but it follows discussion on recent posts. A lot of consumers beleive you get what you pay for. Most aren't going to spend $400 for a full copy of XP, but they see that in the store and when they buy a computer with OfficeXP SBE (a cheaper version) they think they really have something. "Why would anyone charge $400 for a product if it wasn't worth it?" Linux needs an office app that includes all the basics, but added database and other high level apps most people don't use. Then put it next to the "stripped down" version that has just the apps people want. RedHat knows this. Go to Best Buy, and you see the $200 pro version next to the $60 standard. I'll bet they sell more of the $60 version, but the $200 pro version boosts the percieved value of the $60 standard one.
