thanks IRS
do you work for the IRS? Otherwise, I don't see why you would be thanking them for giving money that is already yours back.

Why is a large business safer than a small business?
One is actively trying to fuck me out of my money, the other's livelyhood usually depends on my satisfaction.
I've boycotted them 100% now...its not hard and it really isn't a $$ issue. Anyone with half a brain will realize that the stuff at Walmart isnt inexpensive, it is just cheap. There are few things in their stores that I could not get somewhere else for cheaper, often much cheaper, or a better product for a comparable prices. The only thing walmart had was its convenience...having all that shit in one place can save trips, though I found you just ended up buying stuff you didn't need.
While I agree she shouldn't make it a rule, she is not a luddite and she is right. 99% of the people I see with laptops in class do not actively participate, surf the web or try to cram everything down in their word file.
I'm still waiting for the adsense, and thus google stock, crash. It will come. There are so many adsense scraper sites and the fact that every tom dick and harry can throw adsense on a page is not necessarily a good thing. I think google should be doing some quality screening, but I guess adwords advertisers don't really care.
Ummm no. Signing the reciept is what binds you to repayment for that purchase. The card is just an object, it is not a contract. The signature on the card IS for comparison with the signature on the receipt and the reason merchants may not accept SEE ID is that most (all?) card companies dont like it when people write see ID, it defeats the purpose of the signature block. That said, a lot of places now are checking IDs for purchases...which generally pisses me off. I shouldn't need a drivers license to use my credit card. The banks make more than enough money that loss from fraud shouldn't outweigh my convienence or relative privacy.
A referees calls have real value to a basketball player. Maybe we should start selling travelling calls for the March Madness tourney. After all, supply and demand. Simple economics.
I'm sure they will be support for it by the time it is really *needed*. If it is an open and available spec, support could be coding before these things start becoming popular. Otherwise, as the linux community doesn't enjoy the advantages of MS, it will be reverse engineered after release as someone's need dictates. Honestly, how is this a useful question? These drives seem to have limited use outside of laptops and there shouldn't *Need* to be special support, as other posters have said. It should adhere to already existing SATA standards or what not and handle everything on the inside.
I beg to differ. Open source is a real issue. My school spends millions of dollars on MS contracts and has to upgrade their contracted Dell computers all the time just to keep pace. While Windows and other prop programs are needed, there is no reason that many of the workstations couldn't be switched over to linux. We have workstations dedicated solely to catalog lookups for the library. I would love to see the MS tax be eliminated there, all it needs is a web browser to run and MS support isn't needed on those machines. I would also sleep better at night knowing my personal information wasn't kept, most likely, on windows machines.
I use openoffice and have never ONCE had a problem moving a document between here and the Word2000/MS machines at school. This tells me that there could be room for an alternative, especially when computer seats are so expensive. You could take dated hardware and convert them to word processing/web browsing stations for cheap.
I don't know why I'm wasting my time with you, you are an obvious troll. Academic institutions are the places where freedom SHOULD be pushed. Open document standards should be the norm. This doesn't mean no MS machines at all. But there is room for OSS there. It's only a non-issue for those who can't wrap their heads around concepts like freedom, cost savings and portability. And freedom is a political issue. I suggest you take a class and learn what politics really are.
I just got done playing a session of Far Cry. I play ET all the time. Quake 4 is nice. Will be installing Civ 4 soon...classwork permitting.
Mmmmm....Cedega. If I can't get it to run under linux, I don't buy it.
You do know that Senate and House reelection rates for incumbents are 90%+ With house pushing 97-99 most years. That is why old, racist, biggoted and backwards reps and senators remain in Congress.
The few insightful, educated people that are able to make meaningful votes will not be able to counter the vast, sheeplike public. That is just common sense. This myth of 'democracy', that *I* can do something is almost utter garbage. Don't even start to say "Write letters", get the "word" out. Campaigns are won with money. People with 20 mill to burn, that Senator from what New Jersey?, or incumbents WIN. That's the bottom line.
That is the single most retarded comment I've read all day. Tell me how google censoring search results is going to put them in a position to 'influence change' in the Chinese govt.
Its a bit harder to purchase consumer goods not made in countries like China than it is to make the choice not to do business with the Chinese govt as a billion dollar company.
Lets see: Someone just living: little disposable income with which to fight the balance of the economy.
Billion dollar company willfully choosing to participate in government censorship programs.
I think there is a big difference. There is no double standard. Companies are not people no matter how many laws give them people like rights. Comparing a company's actions to people's everyday choices is just ridiculous. If I made a million a year, I'd be able to spend more money to aquire products from better places (voting with my money so to speak.) But you know what? You know who moved the factories there in the first place? Oh my god. I'll give you one guess cause your so smart. That's right: the companies.
While you make some good points, you are going a little too far with the whole if you see it you are probably the racist. I have the ability, and I'm nobody special, to examine things relatively objectively and see how certain things may be percieved or intended a certain way by others without having those perceptions or intentions myself. Even if the boy doesnt see that flag as racist, its intent could still be as such. Furthermore, whether or not the act of pairing those movies was an intended racist act is really irrelevant: the point is that it could be percieved as such and offend somebody. Now you may not care about that, I'm not really PC so I don't, but I bet walmart does. Cosell may not have intended those remarks to be racist, but they could be percieved as such and if he couldn't fathom how it could be construed as innappropriate then I'm sure he could have been informed and his veil of ignorance lifted.
Just cause someone can see how something could be a racist act doesn't make them racist. It makes them perceptive.
That is not so bad, and if it is about an unnamed professor I don't know what the school is doing. I'd sue, these are the types of cases that need to be brought forth. Schools are businesses, they really only care about their bottom line despite their espousing (falsely) intellectual freedom and some times they need to be slapped back down.
While I know that it is unreasonable to expect companies or even individuals to actively persue open formats, I feel that it should definitely be considered in the best interest of the people for governments at all levels to make such efforts. People comparing this situation to defense contracting or the use of other closed products are making bad analogies. This is not like hiring a private contractor or purchasing a commercial product. This is more like making codes and regulations that can only be followed with the use of a certain company's product. This would be like if the electrical code said that you could only use wire from a special company or that it had to be assembled in a certain way that only said company has the information and patent for. I'm lost as to what grounds anyone could argue for closed formats anyway - any takers please fire away. There is nothing preventing MS from implementing these formats in Office - this seems to be a case where there is only one logically right option and those that try to push the closed format option look ridiculously silly.
Ummm..no..open formats are bad...because...ummm...just trust us...Office doesn't use them...and office is so popular so it must be ok! I mean, seriously, what is the logic?
Only if they are taking a loss on the first item. I doubt Gillette is taking a loss on the razor bundle, its just a smaller margin of profit that the blades alone. The manufacturing costs aren't that high.
Same with printers. I doubt they are taking losses. Yes, they bundle half full cartridges but I highly doubt the manufacturing costs outstrip the sale cost...these aren't complex devices.
Phones: Myth. Manufacturers make plenty of money. Network providers subsidize the phone for the end user. There is a difference.
Drugs: Invalid. Thats more akin to handing someone a free sample of food in hopes they like it, become addicted. The product you want them to buy is the product you gave them a try of. This is not what MS is doing.
They will treat her and bill her. The bill will go into collections. It will stain her credit history. There is no such thing as this treat if unable to pay, it is treat if unable to pay up front. Then the homeless and other people who give fake names get away, and other citizens get jacked with bills.
Sony's UMD is a direct result of the current media control situation in America. If companies weren't allowed to have their hands in so many pots, UMD would not exist in its current form. Sony is only able to do it because they own the rights and the means to it all anyway and had to negotiate no deals.

Anyone else find it funny that google allows such clicktrap spamming websites to run their ads? I don't.

That is one theory. The other theory involves lobbying and new laws.

How can a closed source buggy system be considered 'known'?
I just got done playing a session of Far Cry. I play ET all the time. Quake 4 is nice. Will be installing Civ 4 soon...classwork permitting. Mmmmm....Cedega. If I can't get it to run under linux, I don't buy it.
