    I know microsoft is just being the bitch for the MPAA/RIAA.
    Microsoft makes more money than both(Maybe).
    If Vista didnt play HD content at all and publicly denounced the MPAA/RIAA they would easily be able to win the argument on the side of consumer friendliness. But you see its all about protecting your content. And if microsoft uses WGA why shouldnt everyone else have their own disgusting unfriendly shit to stop you from doing what you want with the content that you own.

    Microsoft will push manufacturers to no longer ship machines with XP.
    They are forcing upgrades with DirectX10.

    The average user is going to end up with Vista, my mum will get Vista with her next lap top.
    No matter what microsoft will make money.

    And we, the technical consumer are going to get fucked. We will have a drm infested piece of shit os forced down our throats to play games and watch HD movies... I for one will be sitting out the next format war. DVD is good enough, DivX is great and MP3s are great.
    I will also be ignoring games that only use directx 10 for as long as possible.

    I think all that we need to sink vista is a directx10 patch for winxp. Then I will never even have to see this abomination of an operating system. I mean honestly why would I buy it. Microsoft has clearly said they arent making the OS for me the consumer but for the Media industry. MPAA/RIAA can go fuck themselves for all I care. If they die there will always be music and movies. Albeit most likely shit movies. I wish microsoft would just protect the rights of their consumers for a change.

    Vote with your wallet. Dont buy vista AND convince as many people as you can to stay away from it aswell.

    not according to australian copyright law.
    We are legally entitled to copy only 10% or 1 chapter (whichever is larger) of a book for educational or personal use.
    This does translate into movies and music when copied for educational or personal use.

    If they dont include everything that was fair use in the next generation of players, then I think that all methods of circumventing whatever security measures they put in place is fair use. Especially if it leads to mainstream pirating. Because we all know that mainstream pirating leads to cheaper licensing fees. YaY for pirates.

    We are a huge country with 5 people per sq kilometre.
    I mean besides antartica we are the most sparesly population continent on the planet.
    I live in the burbs, 45mins from the CBD.
    I have a 24MBS DSL connection. Our local council recently installed Fibre To The Kerb.
    So i could get cable instead if i wanted to.
    I get 80gb/m limit for $99 AU, and if i go over that limit im shaped to 64k. No extra fees.
    Any suburb that doesnt have a high speed SLAM complains like buggery till they get one.

    I think the American system is fucked, and your $200BN went straight back to the govt as bribes so the telcos could keep their monopoly. But hey thats how your system works right? Just pay enough money to the govt and you can get any law passed.

    I dont think so.
    Programming is like learning another language.
    If you know what it is you are trying to express then reguardless of the difficulty of the language, given time you will be able to use that language to convey your message.
    However if you dont know what it is you are trying to say, no matter how good you are at a language you wont know what your talking about. The hard core shit that you learn from a cs degree is not the programming languages but how to go about solving programming problems. Learning how data structures work an how they are laid out in memory is totally different to "int [] foobar".

    Learning recursion, and many generic solutions ie. Towers of Hannoi teaches what you need to do not how.

    When I was doing CS i got pissed of that we only did a few programming units and a few assignments. When I got my job and had to learn languages and debug other peoples code I found that I picked it up right away. Whereas an accountant that learned VBA to do spread sheets would know sweet FA about how to debug ADA.\

    Did I make a point or just spout crap for 10+ lines?

    48 for a mac.
    how big is a datetime? give it 128.
    30 bytes being generous.
    another datetime for disconnect.
    30+30+8+6 = 74bytes
    why not make it a clean 100 bytes.
    If you stored the connection details for every single possible ip adress in the 64bit space.
    you got 4billion connections a day at 100 bytes.Thats only 400g
    So the entire worlds isps would only generate 144TB of connection data a year and only if everysingle ip in the space was used and being connected everyday.

    A few thousand TB is waaaaaaaaay off mate.

    Yes, there is a use. Law Enforcement LOVES long data retention. Really, they do.
    The MPAA/RIAA/IFPI/etc. all LOVE long data retention as well, especially when combined with Law Enforcement.

    The MPAA/RIAA/.... doesnt combine with law enforcement because they arent enforcing laws. What these lawyers do to get your IP address is damn right underhanded, and many would consider illegal. I would say MPAA/RIAA/... combined with politicians love data retention to push their case and make examples of people who oppose their view.

    actually every ISP (in Australia) keeps all of these logs from the beginning of time. If they wanted to know who had this ip 5 years ago at 4.22am they could get it. Im not sure if its company policy or what but we just seem to keep them. The mentality is "Why destroy good data?"

    From a consumer/privacy point of view I like this idea. In Australia our privacy laws are so strong that you can go up to ANY private company and demand a list of every single detail they have about you. Im not sure if you can demand they delete them though.

    DRM *IS* inherently evil. The only thing it can do is take rights away from you. It cant give you anything. Nope not at all. DRM is used by big corps to keep the super MPAA/RIAA corps happy that no one can steal their music/movies. They dont care if it wont play next week, or if you didnt back up your computer all your paid for music is gone.

    All DRM is, is about control. Just like region encoding on DVD's. They dont want you to buy a DVD quality movie from another country before it is in your cinema. Just because they cant be fucked with a global release or whatever. DRM is so they control your music and if they think your a twat they can just flick a switch and all the music you ever bought becomes useless. SOunds scary? No. Sounds likely.

    Dont buy into any of the corperate DRM Bullshit. DRM is fucked. DRM is evil. Yes i have an eliminate drm poster on my office wall.

    1. Reality ok how about microsoft. They have had a monopoly on the desktop market for what say 16 years. Sure they are constantly innovating but if it wasnt for patents and anti-competitive practices, suing companies for reverse engineering their products(which was and should be perfectly legal) we might have a competitive desktop market. Microsoft might actually make something compatable with its competitors and o/s software would most likely be 1/10th of the price on shelf. 2. Ok lets assume I aggree with your point and assuming your idea succeeds. When does microsoft release its monopoly on windows and let other companies make their own windows? 10 years at the top? 14 like drug companies? ok then time to let windows give up its monopoly. Its had long enough of govt. protection. Or go by the way of Disney. Where Winnie the Pooh has been under copyright for over 100years, and it looks like it will never be free.

    You see laws(like company policies for that matter) are often made by people who are no longer one of the people. They beleive they are above us and they live in a different world. Take Georgy W. for example. a significant portion of americans wonder where they are going to sleep/eat tonight. He doesnt. All of the soldiers in Iraq are wondering if they are ever going to see their loved ones again. He doesnt.

    They will adopt another more sustainable business model. Look at microsoft. If piracy was 100% legal sure they would have to downsize but their product would still be there, and they would still make a shitload of money of certification and support.
    Linux? Wouldnt even notice if piracy was legal because you can download it for free. Your argument is just want microsoft wants you to beleive so they can keep their market share by illegally monopolising the market, screwing over competitors and being an overall shitstain on the computer industry today.

(I just hope that they have pissed off enough consumers that no publishing house will use them anymore.)

    sorry you have no idea mate. When you buy a CD you are buying a product. You own the CD and all of the music on and you can do whatever you want with it as long as you dont violate fair use(ie burn 1000x copies to give to your mates) When you buy a song of itunes you arent really buying anything. You are buying the right to access the server and download a song once. Then that song beleives that it is pirated unless you can prove otherwise.(registering your computer to play). So since you own a licence to the song and not actually a product, you should be able to download the file continuously forever until your aggreement expires. The same way you can play your cd forever. Its the same thing as windows. If you buy a licence to install windows on your computer and you sit on your cd. You can ring up your local crack dealer and he'll send you out another cd(with p&h and admin charges of course).
