    Sure, the GPL doesn't matter in this case. What matters is that the copyright holder can chose to 'take the code non-opensource' for any and all improvements they make. But you can still fork the original 'open' code, if the license was truely open.

    If it is GPL, but the copyright is retained by a small number of people who are willing to sell their rights to it, then it can be taken closed-source. Of course, anyone can fork from the last GPL'd version. That's essentially what happened with SSH if I understand that correctly.

    Not sure how it's grown over the years, but Visio was a 'port' of Diagram for NeXTStep by Lighthouse Design, Ltd. ( Lighthouse Design on Wikipedia ), they even had the order direct from the company that made Visio.

    He was probably right to oppose nuclear power. Certainly we have better technology today to make safer nuclear power. Again, nuclear power will never be completely safe, but neither is wind, hydro, nor coal. Conservation, both thru individual action and thru technology are probably the safest 'forms of power', but they would never be enough.
    It is time to bring nuclear power back into the discourse about our energy needs, but I'm not sure it's time to start building plants as fast as we can either...

    Depends on the company I suppose. I've been telecommuting basically full-time at my new job for the last 4.5 months. I drive the 90 minutes into the office once a month and they put me up in a hotel for a few days to a week. My last job I was telecommuting for 6 months (relocated so my wife could attend a particular university) before the next round of layoffs got me. According to my boss's boss (my boss got the ax too), I was in the front of the list because I was remote and due to the merger feelings about telecomuting at the top of the company had changed. All along, my boss had no trouble with me telecommuting and my coworkers had no trouble colaborating with me. Voice over IP with a good headset on all the ends can be a great boon.

    The trouble is, the terrorists have their incomes outside the states, and are just spending money here. Therefore, they don't owe any taxes and the IRS has no reason to track them down.

    In my college years, the sailing instructor talked about two guys who were hired to deliver a boat to Dana Point. They were coming to Dana Point from the north, set the autopilot to the harbor entry bouy. Unfortunately for the boat owner or their insurance, the actual Point (landform) from which the city takes it name was between them and the entry bouy. Hillarity ensued...

    I've been meaning to do that with my DirecTivo (Philips DSR-7000 I think). Two questions:
    Can you get shows you've previously (before hack) recorded off the box unencrypted?
    Was it a ton of work to get setup and working?

    The trouble is, what they have that is of value is well-audited, high-security code. You can't 'merge' that into NetBSD or FreeBSD (both of which I use) without basically rewriting (or reviewing to such an extent that you understand it as well as if you wrote it, which may take longer) the stuff.

    The difference is that with print, you're not making a copy of it for people to enjoy it, but with audio, since we can't store audio directly, in order for people to enjoy it you'd have to make a copy of it. That's why if I buy a print or a painting and put them up in my business, the artist has nothing to say about it.

    Interesting analogy...
    On the other hand, if you use that piece of paper that you found the snippet on, you almost certainly couldn't be found guilty of anything. You could put it up in a store window, or show it to your friends, or give it away, or trade it for goods (like the penny).
    And also on the other hand, if you were to _copy_ the penny, you'd probably get into lots of trouble (ok, maybe not for a penny, but if it were a $20 :-)

    But when the US government does something, almost nobody says a word.

    They used to, but now they're detainees... You see, in the US, if you speak out against China you're a patriot, but if you speak out against Bush or the rest of the US government you're a terrorist.

    I'm still hoping for a reversal, but after the 2004 election where Bush was the 'war hero' and Kerry the 'coward flip-flopper', I'm not holding my breath.

    And I thought Steve Jobs had a good RDF...

    I use the windows in our house to heat it in the winter and cool it in the summer. All it takes is some good blinds/curtains and the persistence to make use of them at the right time of the day/night.

    Not only that, but since I've already made an investment in the technology, if I can convince other people that it's better than other tech, they are more likely to invest in it, leading to more people working to improve and support it. That helps protect my investment.

    It's easy to change everyone's lifestyle. "Run out" of oil, price of gas goes to $20/liter. Everyone's lifestyle changes.
