dont forget that while sony may have tipped lik-sang into going out of business, it was nintendos' suit that put them on shaky ground in the first place.
fun and art are not the same thing. they both can be the other, but are not mutually exclusive. to move along in the direction of equating games with movies. games should be held to the same standards as film. the difference is that you add in nonlinearity and interactivity.
i personally feel that games, like movies are an artform. whether a particular movie has significant artistic merit is up to the critic or in the case of games, the player.
when you critique a film, you examine its artistic direction, themes, plot, dialogue and emotional impact. due to the nonlinearity and interactivity of games, you must factor in cohesiveness in relation to the plot [are you wandering around aimlessly simply because the game does not set coherent goals?, do said goals make sense in relation to advancing the plot?], precision of the form of interaction [does your interaction with the game have a profound effect on the game environment?].
with nintendo you have a company that is focused only on one aspect of emotional impact: fun factor. emotional impact is something inherent in all video game consoles. they all have the capacity to be just as fun. changing the form of interaction does not automatically make something more fun; it makes for innovative interaction. thats it. [note the general low scores for non first-party wii titles.] they are not automatically more fun than the exact same game released using traditional controls. if nintendo released the wiimote back in the 80s instead of the control pad, we would all be clamoring about how the new control pads are so great: "wow, i can control the actions with just a press of a few buttons instead of moving my whole arm/hand. this is great and simplifies interaction to allow me to concentrate on the actual game!". the wiimote is still not a completely precise 1 to 1 input device, so interaction is still not perfect and/may/ be a degradation of control in certain genres.
so as a developer for a nintendo platform you have this corporate philosophy that pushes for solely fun games. pushing for one single genre does not move the industry ahead. nintendo should have learned this from the rise of the playstation. limiting your emotional impact to general light-hearted romps around fantasy spaces loses its appeal as gamer tastes change and evolve. sony platform developers latched onto this and released a wide variety of games that covered every genre, theme and touched upon multiple emotional aspects: pure fun [crash], suspense [resident evil], mystery [metal gear solid], sadness [death of aeris in FFVII] et al. nintendo has always been limited in this respect.
given that limited scope of games that nintendo [and therefore their consumers] prefer, you also have the new limited focus on providing a solid environment to expand; due to processing and graphical constraints. great art can be made anywhere, but if you give the artist a bigger canvas, at least he has the 'ability' to paint a much more grand scene. by limiting the graphical output, you potentially hinder the artistic direction of the artist. by limiting the processing power you potentially hinder the level of interactivity in the environment itself [physics issues, AI]. limiting interactivity on one side of the fence undermines the strides that they claim motion control will usher in on the other side of the fence.
picasso could paint a masterpiece only using the color blue, but you always want to give him the freedom to choose additional colors should/he/ so choose to use them.
you point out the key issue with reviews. usually they revolve around a single users' experience. if the reviewer that plays the game has a penchant for say... FPS games, if he has to sit down and play a roleplaying game that is generally overlooked in light of its mod community, he is going to score the game lower. a reviewer that prefers tekken will be harder on a title like DoA [IMHO he should be]. whatever that users preferences are come into play.
what i think game magazines/ sites need to do is outline each reviewers tastes and have multiple users review the games. that way readers can find a reviewer whose tastes align more closely with theirs.
you bring up a very important dilemma. is kotaku a blog or is it a journalistic site?
a blog has no responsibility to anyone, nor do they need to answer to anyone.
a journalistic site needs to remain professional and unbiased. they need to report the news, and maintain a certain level of integrity.
if kotaku is simply a blog, they did the right thing by not backing down. however, if they are simply a blog they should not be able to benefit from industry perks such as debug systems, prerelease games, exclusive interviews, etc. these kind of perks are simply noncash bribes so that the product gets a mention.
if they are a journalistic entity, they should work with the press officers at sony and within the confines of journalistic fact. if they wanted to proceed, perhaps they could have offered a re-write [lets not forget that kotaku slanted the article to imply that the feature would be a copy of its various competitors] and requested a possible exclusive the day of the conference.
if the rumor is 100% incorrect, sony could have just stuck with the party line of no comment in regards to rumors. the problem is that the rumor is so huge that it could very well overshadow whatever announcements sony will actually make at GDC. that would lead to sony needing to request it to be removed.
lets say sony replied back that the rumor was 100% true. that gives competitors a solid week to work on a FUD campaign to derail their announcement. it gives the internet a solid week to complain about it being a copy of this and that, and get desensitized to the news. its a no win situation, other than suggest sony reply back with the 'sony does not comment on rumors and speculation' what would you have done?
the fact that sony ALWAYS replies back with no comment except in this situation, 1) gives credibility to the rumor [sony wins]. 2) creates a big hoopla over the internet and wins sony headlines over the next week [sony still wins] 3) gets EVEN more people to listen in for the keynote next week 4) elicits a bunch of "i'm not going to buy a ps3 now" comments from people who never had intentions of buying a ps3 in the first place [they dont matter to sony's bottomline; sony still wins] 5) kotaku starts writing a bunch of negativity about sony [kotaku has always been pretty hard on the ps3 anyways, so sony doesnt 'win' but still... no loss for sony there either.]
the ps3 warranty in the US is one year. if you have been paying attention to the launches, from a hardware perspective the ps3 is a very very solid machine.
also, something people have neglected to mention is the fact that software emulation for the xbox360 is crap because they lost the rights to the nvidia graphics solution of the first xbox. sony owns all of the IP concerning the ps1 and ps2 chips. i think this statement may be slightly blown out of the water until we actually get a list of BC games. i remember the BC problems with the slimline ps2 were similarly blown out of proportion when they were first announced. since the firmware is easily updateable, the software emulation could wind up being more compatible than the US ps3; hell, more compatible than the US slimline ps2...
"...they are liars, thieves(MPAA/RIAA), and rootkiters."
1) liars: name one corporation that doesnt lie
2) thieves: MS has stolen plenty. universal [HD-DVD supporter] is a part of the MPAA as well.
3) rootkitters: MS is the one company most responsible for DRM period. lets not forget that the rootkit simply exploited a vulnerability that MS left open in the first place.
dont get me wrong, im not trying to say that sony is the company of saints. all im saying is that both sides are equally evil.
europe is a HUGE territory for sony. they are already reports of record preorders [one order every 20 seconds? http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/a42660/playstat ion-3-enjoys-record-pre-orders.html ]. the ps3 is expensive and people have come to terms with it. sony could easily sell 500k ps3s bringing that total to what? 2 million world wide within the first week or so. this brings ps3 sales to 1/5 of what the xbox360 has shipped so far worldwide within four months. keep in mind that the 10 million xbox360s are also *shipped* numbers. MS has lowered their spring ship estimates because they flooded the market with consoles this winter in order to make the 10 million console claim.
then keep in mind that these are sales "without" games since resistance seems to be it for most people. what then when singstar is released? europe loves their singstar and eyetoy. what about when sony's litany of exclusives start to be released? no one will disagree that the price is steep for the ps3, but if you dont think sony can sell 5 million consoles you are in denial. in a six month period sony can sell 5 million psps worldwide [and thats a console everyone claims is "dead in the water"]
europe is a huge territory for sony and they are already reporting record amounts of preorders
2) the bulk of "interesting" titles for the ps3 arent being released until the end of feb/ march
lets not forget that until now the main ps3 title has been resistance. gundam musuo[in japan], singstar [in europe], VF5, motorstorm[US] and some of the other newer releases will push sales along. by march, the ps3 release calendar looks to have a solid stream of new content coming.
3) sony still has a few surprise games left
given how few japanese owned an xbox last generation, i expect ninja gaiden: sigma to actually be a pretty big system seller despite the game not getting AAA-level press buildup.
4) the ps3 is partially responsible for the blu-ray buying surge.
there are over 1 million ps3s in circulation, but only ~92k hd-dvd addons sold so far. keep in mind the hd-dvd addon has been on the market over a month before the launch of the ps3.
the ps3 is selling better than the ps2 did at this point in time, but we will have to wait until this time next year to tell if sony will see a huge surge as quality games are released, or if sales turn out largely lackluster. if sales of the hardware pick up, you can imagine that sales of movies will as well.
do people still believe this? sony has no say so on what form of content gets printed on blu-ray. sony themselves may not allow porn to be replicated using its plants, but thats the extent of sony's say-so. sony didnt stop porn from getting printed to UMD. sony didnt send cease and desist letters to websites that cater to delivering porn to its PSP. why do you think they randomly stopped turning a blind eye to something that helped do in one of their first formats? this is FUD.
as a matter of fact, there have been several pornographic blu-ray movie studios producing content in japan since late 2005. vivid, one of the US's largest distributors of pornographic films just simultaneously released a movie on both formats here in the states as well.
look all this up. dont believe the FUD. just because one studio comes out and tells their sob story does not in fact make it true.
BONUS LINK! http://wesleytech.com/blu-ray-vs-hd-dvd-replicatio n-costs-revealed/ one of the reason blu-ray movies are cheaper or equal price to their HDDVD releases is due to the fact that they are cheaper per gig to produce. this flies against one of the major bulletpoints of hd-dvd.
alot of people like older movies. i am definitely dont believe in buying my movies all over again [esp since regular dvds work in next gen drives] but i would rather buy a movie that i've seen and know is worth watching multiple times such as casino, usual suspects or goodfellas than some of the newer crap movies. as for older crap movies; if you are buying scooby doo in HD... i hope youre doing it for your kids' sake.
i dont see a problem here with older releases. some of us are still waiting for titles to be finally released on dvd. why is it a problem that they are doing what/some/ consumers want?
when dealing with any HD source, you have to properly calibrate your color levels with each piece of equipment you use.
any serious A/V enthusiast knows this. however since consoles and most gamers are new to the HD realm, alot of people just plug the console in and go; later they come back and complain about the colors. my dvd players, ps3 and ps2 looked fine on my tv, but when i hooked up my xbxo360, i noticed most games were ridiculously dark until i realized that i needed to calibrate that input on my tv.
theres so much misinformation in here that i dont even know where to begin.
- sony admitted that like the ps2-slimline, there may be some problems with games that did not properly follow TRC specs. - MS did promise that they would eventually get 100% BC, starting w/ major titles first. - ps1/ ps2 games are not quite running on the same hardware. processors? maybe. the output of the ps3 is not the same as the ps1 and ps2. - several hundred games? gross overstatement. a major of games suffering problems are games not even released outside japan. - sony stated that the goal was to eventually create an emulator system for the ps3. its possible that they might add extra filtering at that point. - sony has not tried and failed to write an emulator; given the fact that they have proven to be able to emulate the ps1 on the psp, i believe they may have the technical ability. an emulator would have led to an even longer delay. - with 220,000,000 ps1 chips manufactured, and 120,000,000 ps2 processors manufactured the costs for including those processors in the ps3 are likely very nominal by this point. - blu-ray drives are not failing to read recent movies. i believe youre referring to 'the decent'. the ps3 is one of the few available players that plays the menu and the movie fine. the others play the movie, but require a firmware update to interact with the menus. - sony has thusfar had a very low failure rate on the ps3 in comparison with most recent console releases.
you guys talk as though sega has not developed titles for the PS3 as well. currently i know that full auto2 is exclusive to sony platforms, and the ps3 versions of multi-platformers: virtua tennis, sonic and virtua fighter are all right around the corner from release.
also in this upcoming year, sega has more titles planned for release on the "failing" psp than any other platform.
i own both and in theory, you are right; it/should/ work better that way. however in application the PS3 seems thusfar to have better AI/ physics. i own both, and it seems that the PS3 is just able to handle more objects/ decisions at once and without as much "AI stupidity".
granted its probably just a shortcoming on the developers' part and a few months from now i will eat my words here, but so far your point has yet to be proven; especially since the 360 has a one year advantage.
"Ps3 has crap for games on launch. Wii has almost ALL killer games on launch."
if you look at any game ranking site on the internet, you would notice that across the board sony titles are garnering higher overall ratings than launch wii games. i'm not saying that all sony games are great, but im just pointing out your inherent bias. so far there are two standout titles available for wii, and alot of "filler" games. you may argue that most of the sony titles are "filler" games as well, but still their ratings are notably higher.
thank you. that is the MOST important part. the part that is greatly missing.
if someone has had a PS3 since launch and has never opened it, they obviously never intended to play it in the first place. they didnt want the PS3 in the first place. alot of resellers were anticipating that sony, like the other console manufacturers, would not be able to keep to their shipping schedule; they held onto their PS3s hoping for demand to pick up again near christmas and supply would be low, thereby maximizing their resell profit.
the console was bought in order to sell. now that sony has actually kept their promise to keep steady shipments, supply is higher. since supply is higher, prices on ebay have been reduced to reasonable levels. supply of wii have gone down, so there is a higher profit margin to be made on the wii.
anyone care to discuss the difference between courtesy scores and something on a more grand scale like say the whole neverwinter nights2 debacle? perhaps within the confines of a certain culture or even genre the game takes on higher meaning, and thereby more flaws can be overlooked.
NWN & NWN2 appeal to certain core demographics that can appreciate the game and the potential that lies within. the reviewer sits with the disc for a few hours and writes about what the disc presented across his monitor at that time. he cares alot less about the potential mods, and the new more powerful tools at his disposal. whereas the core audience takes that into account as well. the community weighs the tools greater than the general populous. the general populous being those that may get the chance to sit down and only care about whether the first 2-3 hours are worth the money spent buying the game.
on the other end of the spectrum, zelda fans were up in arms that the gamespot review of the wii version of zelda twilight princess did not fall in line with the rest of the internet reviews. should gamespot have given zelda:tp a higher "courtesy" score? after all this was a zelda game, and with few exceptions... all zelda games deserve at least a 9, right?
for gamers that love all things nintendo, zelda DOES deserve a 9. to finally get a decent game with new controls after waiting years and years for this installment deserves a 9. to get a zelda with non cel-shaded graphics just like they asked nintendo for following TLoZ:WW deserves a 9, right? you cant give less than a 9 to the company that finally gave you the zelda fix youve been waiting over the span of two consoles, and however many years for.
gundam games, dynasty warriors games... chromehounds... they all have a specific demographic that appreciates the games more than the general audience. in their eyes those games deserve higher ratings than they get.
im playing devils advocate here, but would it be fair for them to give a genre fan-score? EX. the world thinks this game deserves a 6, but if you like this series and games like it, then the game is an 8. that wouldnt solve much. i dont think people should pick sides. the internet is vast enough to offer more than one opinion. if anything we should stop putting as much weight on the larger gaming sites and more weight on specific reviewers. find one that likes the exact same games as you do, and follow his specific opinions much more closely.
i fail to understand your argument. the cell is a processor. it does not require a significant license fee if you wish to program an application to utiliize the cell under linux. microsoft on the other hand is charging you for the ability to run your code on the xbox360. you are "forced" [your term] into using their platforms for development. [c#, windows, "XNA", directx]
the only time you pay sony anything is if you wish to purchase a developers' license. if you really want a dev kit, using linux on the ps3 shouldnt even enter your mind; your aims are larger than the scope of the commercial console.
if your argument was against sony's lock out of graphics acceleration i could understand, but microsoft is slightly more guilty of locking users into a proprietary dev kit here. at $99/ year for XNA, you quickly top and exceed the ps3 price tag within two years; thats before you take into account any additional xbox360 features you may want [hd-dvd, additional controllers, wireless, xbox live gold, headsets... etc]
the problem here yes, the wii' problem is a minor physical one, however it can result in injury or loss of property.
the ps3 problem is something that does not cause anyone harm if unattended, and adds value to different sets of users. you can view movies/ games, just not at the resolution you prefer. you gain functionality that was not readily available strictly out of the box. granted, the 1080i issue needs to be handled, but thats only one bulletpoint in three full updates.
a better analogy is:
[wii] you rarely get into accidents and you obviously dont do it on purpose, but those accidents could have been avoided if the company had sprung for better, industry standard tires. [reaction] oh well... i have fun driving the car so ill forgive the higher mortality rate.
[sony] the car has been tested and drives well on every surface except sand. no one really drives on sand much, but when we get the sand issue taken care of we will send you some new tires free, you just might have to spend a few minutes waiting while the company puts them on for you. [reaction]given the amount of money i paid for this car, i should have gotten the tires when i left the shop! no i will not waste my time accepting your free upgrades and fixes!

you guys talk as though sega has not developed titles for the PS3 as well. currently i know that full auto2 is exclusive to sony platforms, and the ps3 versions of multi-platformers: virtua tennis, sonic and virtua fighter are all right around the corner from release.
also in this upcoming year, sega has more titles planned for release on the "failing" psp than any other platform.
what's most scary is:
/. moderation.
how does his post get modded up to four? he didnt say anything that wasnt said in the five consecutive posts above his.
quite the example of the failings of
i own both and in theory, you are right; it /should/ work better that way. however in application the PS3 seems thusfar to have better AI/ physics. i own both, and it seems that the PS3 is just able to handle more objects/ decisions at once and without as much "AI stupidity".
granted its probably just a shortcoming on the developers' part and a few months from now i will eat my words here, but so far your point has yet to be proven; especially since the 360 has a one year advantage.
