    1. Get behind a firewall/router

    2. Configure your IE to use a public Squid proxy to download MS updates (I have my own Squid setup at home - and also a portable vmware Squid server - which also blocks ads and other nasty content.)

    --Note: You will want to set this up in advance, since registration can take up to (4) hours; but in my case it was pretty quick.

    --You have to send them your email, then it auto-registers you; it will be necessary to enter a username and password to authenticate yourself to the cache initially before you can browse. BTW, it doesn't handle secure connections; this is mentioned in the FAQ section 3.4. But it should be a good additional buffer against outside attacks.

    Also, before doing any data transfer (IDE drives only):

    ' hdparm -c1 -d1 -u1 /dev/hda ' and also for hdb or whatever the 2nd drive is connected as. Enables 32-bit, DMA and interrupts.

    I commonly use " bs=1M " in DD operations.

    --My friend and I were trying to rebuild a 2000 Server with AD and Exchange last night after a virus attack. Worked on the box for almost 16 hours straight, called MS Support, and it *still* wasn't fixed by the time I left, at 6:30am.

    Yes, I just completed a project that made PDF forms interactive for use on the Web. Very limited features in some areas (you have to hit Tab to get to the next line when filling in fields) but it paid well.

    I agree it's limited in some ways, but useful for making things look the way you want AND making it interactive. In this case, the client had published a book and wanted to make some of the exhibits in it interactive; the Adobe tools have a 30-day free trial, and let you alter the PDF itself in-situ.

    Acrobat 7.0 Professional will allow you to edit PDF files. You can also create fillable form fields, checkboxes, etc. in existing PDFs.

    You can pipe DD through the "buffer" command: (slows it down a bit, but you will get a progress meter.)

    I actually wouldn't mind. If you've played anything like Halo online, you know that it pretty much requires all the speed it can get - and it's *extremely* annoying to be right in the middle of combat and have things get laggy, or even get kicked off the server.

    My downloads don't require that kind of priority - especially if I'm DL'ing an ISO.

    Have you actually read the article? They're using m0n0wall - self-contained bootable CD.

    Actually this may be a good idea to implement for my brother, who's always complaining his Xbox Live sessions are interrupted by my downloads. And it so happens I have an old P166 Laptop that has 2 PCMCIA slots, and 2 NICs...
