    --Kppp has been getting a lot of bad reports lately on the Mepis user board. I stopped using it years ago myself, and use ' wvdial ' instead to connect over dialup. Wvdial does a much better job of autodetecting your modem, and has a better success rate for keeping the connection alive.

    --I seem to remember reading a magazine article many, many years ago (we're talking maybe sometime in mid-to-late 1980's) that said something about Intel registers having to be programmed in "backwords" order... That would explain it.

    --Agreed - up to a point. I went without a TV feed for 2 years and got along pretty well with VCR tapes, the computers, and books; but I missed pro wrestling, cartoons, and the Sci Fi channel. These days I don't watch cartoons that much, but the other 2 are pretty much the only reason I have Dish Network installed. That, and Most Extreme Elimination Challenge. :)

    OT, but who's your favorite char in SC2? I pretty much can play anybody on the Dreamcast version, but on the Xbox the only char I come even close to "mastering" is Nightmare (who was one of my favorites, along with Kilik, in the original.)

    ** I did install Caldera once, a long time ago. They were the first distro where you could play a game (Tetris?) during the install, which was pretty impressive at the time.

    --What I'm worried about is the Zip that is used on Linux (and possibly other) boxes. I sent an email to the developers almost A YEAR AGO cmoplaining about the still-extant 2GB filesize problem, and AOTW they still have done NOTHING about it!

    --The level editor for Timesplitters 2 on the Xbox is the best I've ever seen - unfortunately it's a bit buggy and doesn't have a lot of memory for *everything* you'd like to put in, but the interface is 3D and very intuitive.

    --Amen. I was profoundly disturbed by reading that article, and thinking what it might have been like for the astronauts in their final moments. God forbid anything like this ever happens again - we should have learned better from Challenger. Yes, space travel is dangerous - but *obviously* we haven't done enough yet to try and make it as safe as possible.

    --God rest them; at least their ending was mercifully brief, compared to some other possible scenarios (Apollo 13 comes to mind.)

    --I agree with what you're saying about recurring characters in $popular-Tv-series not getting into fatal situations these days. Most modern writing is much too "safe." OTOH, look what happened when they killed off Tasha Yar - it's still being talked about today.

    --Now the reason that I mentioned Bob 'n Ed, is that one of the MAJOR female chars (that I really like) in the strip, is getting killed off this week. :( It's really hard to take, as she reminds me of someone I know IRL. It makes for some DAMN good drama (author sez he's NEVER received this much feedback before) but it kinda sucks, too.

    --Oh well. I recommend anyone who sees this post to go and catch up on the BnE archives, there's some really funny stuff in there. And if you want to complain about Kelly being transported into a Terry Pratchett-like situation, you can let your thoughts be heard here:

    --In all seriousness... Aside from Jolene Blalock, I have not seen ANY reason to watch the show. The writing (from what I've seen) is substandard for what one expects of Star Trek.

    --No dis to the cast members, doubtless they've been trying their best and "the show must go on" you know - but puh-leeze. I'm a fan of "TOS" -- and Scott Bakula, while good in Quantum Leap, can't hold a candle to Kirk *or* Picard. (For that matter, neither could Janeway.) I never watched DS9 enough to form an opinion on Sisko.

    --OTOH, even tho the Remans were overdone, I definitely liked "Nemesis" - if I had the funds, I'd buy the DVD. For my money, Nemesis ranks up there with ST II (Wrath of Khan), and the Borg movie (never could remember which number that one was, but I liked it.)

    --IMHO, the *only* thing that can save Star Trek is to get people like Harlan Ellison and Diane Duane writing for them again. And fire Berman. Nothing personal, just need a change in the guard.

    --Oh, and bring Wil back so we can get an update on his character. :)
