You could get Streamtuner and hit record on a bunch of spoken word audio streams so they get recorded via Streamripper into mp3 streams, and take those with you. There's a whole lot of different spoken word stuff that streamtuner shows up, ready for the ripping.
I think you've gotta pay for a good version of those tools if you're running windows though, but who cares about windows anyway.
I hate to admit it, but you do have a point there. OS software should be intuitive.
But hey, just give it a little more time, we'll get there.
With the Microsoft business model, they do R&D to determine what's intuitive. Not the best way, really, and definetely more expensive. With the OSS way, people will play with the code, and the version that's most pleasant to use will be the one that becomes the standard. It's positively Darwinian.
Their stuff comes from focus groups, ours follows a community-powered evolutionary model. While the OSS model may take longer to get to the superior product, without a doubt it will get there, in all aspects of use.
But they've been doing that for more than a year now. But IMO, if you're running a p2p app without stuff like a firewall and IP blacklist, odds are that your system is already compromised.
It also might be interesting to note that the attacks are much more prevalent on the anonymous networks (freenet, ants, i2p, tor, mute)
I know I'll be doing that. I don't own a tv. (:
I've don't understand who would even want to watch it on tv when you can set up a nice computer-based multimedia center. My computer sits in the living room, with a big lcd monitor right on the coffee table, delivering countless hours of commercial-free tv without the hassle of tuning in or getting tivo.
That is exactly the reason why all music downloading, legal or not, is to the industry's profit. It facilitates knowledge about the bands that are out there in a way that has never been possible before.
I once read that the best way to get someone to swallow a lie is to mix a little truth into it. They showed the people Linux, then showed them the propaganda, disinformation, and blatant lies of their "Get The Facts" campaign.
Good for Fedora that they have these values of only-free software included. That said, when those values get in the way of the initial functionality, newbies who are trying it are going to be frustrated.
Seems to me that the reviewer should have tried something that already has full multimedia support out of the box, like PCLinuxOS.
Yeah, it might not be over yet, but I think this is cause for celebration!
Now about that bill to permanently ban software patents in all member countries..
When will it be over?
It will be over when the United States has to declare bankruptcy due to stupid policies such as the ones that give rise to bogus patents.
That's ridiculous and really messed up that a university would have a policy like that. The whole idea of a university is the dissemination of knowledge, not locking it up in legalities.
I was thinking the same thing. Knowing Microsoft's immoral business practices, they'll probably try to extend it and then call it their 'intellectual property'. Man, I hate those guys.
The best way to get something done in Europe or anywhere else is to be very vocal about the problem, in places where it's not normally discussed, and strongly advocate your position. We know that software patents will hurt the smaller companies, so everybody needs to spread that information offline as much as possible, blow it way out of proportion so all those nongeek idiots see a problem, and shout down anybody who disagrees.
These are the tactics that vocal minorities such as neoconservatives and the religious right use to get stupid laws passed, and in a world where people only ever listen to loud, abrasive assholes, we would do well to start making some noise!
I'm beginning to believe that it's not about terrorism at all and that even the fbi guys know it. It's about controlling people, whether through false terrorism allegations and the fallout they cause or merely the threat of anti-terrorism activities to keep people from speaking political dissent.
Embedded Linux use in phones has gone up 400% in the past year. Isn't it already the top embedded OS?

Man I'd be rockin that Slashdot toolbar for reals.

I second that!
"Maybe even allow you to earn credit by seeding a ton, to encourage the BT usage..." Now that would be very interesting.
Wow, that's one of the few times I've ever laughed while reading Slashdot. Kudos to you.

It's also used by the Ourmedia site so that they can get all that creative commons stuff dynamically published out to the site.
The whole idea of these new discs is to increase data storage. Why would we want to adopt the smaller storage when more is obviously better?

I love the stuff they put out, I got some great philosophy-oriented audiobooks done by them last year.

Rejecting the bill isn't enough. There now needs to be a major push for a bill to permanently keep software patents from ever becoming law.
When will it be over? It will be over when the United States has to declare bankruptcy due to stupid policies such as the ones that give rise to bogus patents.
This is bullshit!

That's when slashdot mod points will be the next currency :)

Yeah that would be sweet to have them start selling laptops around here like that. Online petition maybe?
