I think you are reffering to the I860... it is now known mainly in the microcontroller version called I960.
The I960 has been, and still is, used in many RAID-controllers. AFAIK it was a RISC CPU but I'm not sure...
"Why do these display companies actually think consumers are giong to buy this stuff if they keep rehashing it without making real imporvements?"
You have answered this question yourself... the answer is in the question.

The difference is that consumers will brainlessly consume anything the manufacturers deliver...
Intel & HP could give for a upgrade from Alpha to Itanium was/is: "Easy migration to MS Windows Server and MS SQL server", what bloody respect do they deserve ??

I do not agree... the system should be able to present graphical output for anyone. The problem is not the OS... the problem is the (G)UI... Someone said once that a picture tells more than 100 0 words... how do you make a useful picture for a blind person ? How do you represent colors ? They will come... when my Geek-O-Finder hits the market early next month... and until then you should ask yourself "Am I a real geek ??"... The Geek-O-Finder will be available i 4 versions : a blue one for boys looking for geeky girls, a red one for girls looking for geeky boys, a silver one with a switch for locating geeky girls or geeky boys and finally a black one for avoiding geeky people... Unisex versions will cost about $100, Bisex about $200 and the anti geek unit about $300.
I'm sorry to inform you that your assumption that "market powers" rules the market are false. We (the customers) are not getting what we want or need we are getting what the megacorps want to sell us.
If a manufacturer really wnat to deliver what customers want he will be terminated by the megacorps, either in a court, in the press or simply by beeing bought by a megacorp.
We are not customers any longer we are now consumers...
There are two problems with.NET : Microsoft and Windows. The day M$ will deliver a.NET for something else than Windows there will only be 1 problem with.NET...
