Freedom is in the eye of the beholder. What I think is freedom is probably not freedom to you, because you're scared of me and the things I like to do, even if they are not dangerous to you.
You know what? I like to drive really fast, too. Want to take away my freedom to drive before I commit a crime? Better hurry and pass those laws.
My point is everyone should have the freedom to do whatever drugs and sex they want to do with anyone who is willing to do it. But everyone should be educated about the effects of drugs and sex and provided proper treatment if they choose to seek rehabilitation. That's what a loving and caring society would do.
Society in the USA? Well, we're not very loving or caring. But we got lots of money and lots of prisons, and that's all that really matters.
So fragile that even the smallest rocks flying around in space could easily take it out. All you need is a small fracture in the hull for the heat of reentry to burn the thing apart. And we're too cheap to give our astronauts some real protection, like thier own escapable lifepod, built into the shuttle's design.
What troubles me is by our actions we probably think the shuttle itself is more valuable than the astronauts aboard.
With the cost of these things you'd think they'd be made out of titanium. What ever were we thinking to allow our government to care for the safety of our astronauts?
I think most Americans believe if they throw enough money at a problem it will go away. Pray for the lives of those astronauts and morn them on CNN every day for a year and it will be alright. Time for those dreamers to wake up, IMHO.
Its like education. When money gets involved, everyone loses. I don't know. Send more teachers to space, that's got to be the answer.
The thing to keep in mind is that this is terrorism not war. The goal of terrorism is to inflict terror not destruction.
But at least we know our government was preparing to defend us. Jeb Bush even went so far as to prepare to declare martial law in the state of Florida on Sep. 7th, 2001.
There's so much evidence that suggest our government knew about the 9/11 attack that I don't even think we can call it terrorism anymore, when we look at our history and things like the Northwood document. Its just shooting ourselves in the foot to get the ignorant masses to rally for war. Let's hope all those innocent American lives were worth the billions we can make off of oil and other middle eastern resources.
Don't worry, nothing is going to happen again. Until they need another war. But I think it was worth it. Don't you?
Fix the few glaring problems? Hmmm.. and just what ARE those problems? I've been trying to determine where the fuck-up is for years now and the closest I can get to finding the problems is our own administration who had every opportunity to protect us, but did everything in their power to fail. Its almost as if they wanted this to happen.
I mean.. fuck, what do I mean? How can you explain that your government "let it happen" to a bunch of sheep? They want to believe that their government protects them when all the evidence points to the contrary. So they go on being sheep, believing what they want and doing what they are told.
And what is that? Steal from people, then admit you're wrong months after you were proven to be infringing on someone else's IP. Yeah, let's hope all capitalists act appropriately. Its so typical of greedy white trash.
This is why I will never buy another linksys or Microsoft or SCO product again. I've drawn a line, anyone else want to cross it?
And THAT is what capitalists call innovation. I mean, just look at it, images embedded directly into HTML. Doesn't Amazon already have a patent on this?
Us geeks who have to write this stuff know it sucks ass. But can you imagine how many HTML web monkey can get their jobs back when they have to write out those images pixel by pixel. This could respark the dotcom boom.
Fine, well, if I were to hack some corporation or person on the net I would do it through a wireless connection to some open network like yours, then hack through one of your systems and trash your system on my way out to delete as much evidence as possible. Its virtually anonymous and it doesn't matter whether your data is valuable or not. I'm not interested in your data, I'm interested in anonymity.
You can trust 99% of the people, but it only takes one like me to ruin your day. And I think that is what all this paranoia is about. I exist.:)
Well, they are starting to design and build some rather nice CPUs now. I don't know much about where this technology comes from, but I think there are a lot of smart people all over the planet. I don't think Russia's technology is any better than US technology or India's technology. Today anyone can learn enough to do almost anything on the internet.
You don't think we'll get interested again if China starts putting mining colonies on the Moon and Mars? Or do you mean the race finished for Americans a long time ago? I agree with that one.
We already think its over, it has only just begun.
Now I'm curious. Which vision is that? The one where everything is free? Or the one where everyone is free to steal other people's work and profit from it?
Once Microsoft is taken out by free software, people will learn that that algorithm can be applied to other business models, like the music and movie and game industries. Eventually there will be no jobs or money left, if we're so stubborn that we refuse to give up the market economy and base our life on something other than money.
But look at things from my perspective. I grew up on a C-128, then moved to Windows 3.11 on a PC while most the systems at school were Windows 3.x on Novell or Macs. The C-128 is superior to the other OSs in many ways, such as having a built in machine language monitor. Then I moved and got a whole new set of computers, again PCs on Novell and Macs. Finally about 7 years ago I moved to the bay area and started working in the field. Everything was WIndows NT 3.51 and WIndows 9x or UNIX. Mac wasn't much of a player. While Windows went from NT 3.51 to 4.0 and 2000 I was learning UNIX. I learned all about IRIX and Solaris/SunOS. I learned all about Sun and SGI hardware, UNIX and its capabilities and how they compared with Microsoft products in the datacenter. Real hands-on experience, not just reading reports. After that I did some contracting and learned some about AIX, HPUX, networking and routing, OSX, and a little about BSD. The whole time I was using Linux for free at home to learn how all this stuff worked.
I've always respected BSD, but it will never be my beloved Linux. One of these days it will be able to do everything my Linux boxes can do. And when it is easy enough I don't have to relearn the wheel to install and use it I'll give it a shot. Perhaps I am missing out by not learning the BSD way of doing things. The OSX way of doing things makes me ask questions like that a lot. But I'm lazy.
Just take The News as an example.. we publish news that makes people affraid of the world around them and changes their opinions about eachother. This news gets the highest ratings in a capitalist system where metrics are the only thing that matter, which is why it gets so intense. They always go after the murder and violence first.
If we restructured even just our media system to promote real education and an environment designed for humans to live comfortably in, I bet a lot of things would change. Could you imagine what might happen if we redesigned work to be a game, possibly even fun and enjoyable, or a competition to see who can get the most done? I think money doesn't really matter, people do.
I recently learned why people are worth more than everything in the world, their minds can create _new_ things. Something new is not in this world, it is a monopoly within their mind, making them infinitely valuable. Every one of us has this ability.
The current distribution of wealth is caused by the current system of capitalism. What we need is a humanitarian system that makes sure all the needs of the individual is taken care of before the excess wealth is distributed between the workers.
I think the people who do the most work should get the most pay. But I also think every person should be given everything they need and most of the things they want if we're talking about tools, books, supplies, etc. that could be used for something productive and/or educational.
The reason our software sucks today isn't because its too hard to write, its because its too difficult for capitalists to create the proper environment that makes people want to write good software. Its the same thing for every industry.
Yes. Stop sending food and tell those sovereign nations that they MUST feed their people if they wish to remain sovereign. If they don't then the UN/US will overthrow their government and feed their people for them.
If we're willing to do this for Saddam and the Talebon why not expect every country to be humane? Or did we just do this for oil and the economics of the situation?
Space needs scientists who don't work for money. I think entrepreneurs would just get more people killed in their attempt to line their pockets.
I don't know. I just don't think capitalism is going to be me or my children into space in our lifetimes. I seriously doubt I'll go into space in my lifetime and I'm not even sure if that's something I want to do anymore, like flying on an airplane. It was a very nice childhood fantasy, but the reality of it is so much more freightening when money is involved.
Let me put it this way I'd feel safe if they treated money like no object where my safety was concerned. But at present they care more about their money than they do my life.
The firewire port is partially working, it just doesn't detect any of MY devices. But its either because I'm running a newer kernel and compiled their src rpm or maybe I just didn't try hard enough. Anyway, its very nice hardware. I hope the drivers become more stable soon so I can order some of this equipment for my dad and sis.
Teach him how the fish and the next thing you know the world has been fished free of 90% of its large fish.
That's the problem with us today, we think our parents were smart. Guess what? They weren't. And neither were their parents. We're so doomed. doomed. DOOOMED!
Why would you want to inspire your children to be scientists, researchers and explorers?
I thought the whole point to life was to get rich quick. Shouldn't they be legislators, lawyers, and entrepreneurs? I wonder how the average scientist, researcher and explorer are doing in today's world.
And I might actually be FOR censorship in our libraries IF we used open source software with open black/white lists that everyone could determine if they have content that should be kept out of the library system. But even that is a scary road once you choose to take it. We chose to go with a proprietary commercial solution.
How would you feel if Microsoft was allowed to build a school and teach your children? How would you feel about putting your children through the Nazi Germany school system? That probably wouldn't bother you too much if you were already a Nazi.
Exactly!
Freedom is in the eye of the beholder. What I think is freedom is probably not freedom to you, because you're scared of me and the things I like to do, even if they are not dangerous to you.

That was very very, extremely, informative. Many thanks! :)
Let's just agree to disagree on everything.
Nobody can trust anyone else to properly count their votes. So I say to hell with this system based on trust. Anarchy for everyone!

The nForce2 is a nice chipset but their Linux drivers leave much to be desired, like working audio and firewire.
Its also ironic that minors don't have the same constitutional rights that we do.
