They have been saying that there will be no shortage of consoles on launch. That's not what I'm worried about. I just hope I get the games and controllers I want...
I've been trying to track down a pre-order for weeks (in Canada). No luck. EB has been taking pre-orders for weeks, but only if you trade in ten games. Future Shop is not doing pre-orders. Best Buy hasn't made a decision yet. Toys-R-Us took a small number of pre-orders right when the price was announced. And the best (read worst) part about this whole thing is that when I ask the employees why they're not doing pre-orders they make some type of reference to the "XBox incident". Thanks Microsoft, for runining it for everybody!
Despite the crassness of parent, it's a pretty accurate representation of what a good portion of the rest of the world is feeling. TV and media distract the average American suburbanite into not thinking about what actually matters. As long as they can drive to their office job in their SUV and come home their TV, everything in the world is fine. They don't have to think because they pay to have someone think for them.
You're welcome here in Canada. We're far from perfect, but we're a world better.
I think, the price of the internet should eventualy move to nothing, with the right commercalization wouldn't commerce want to you log on to the net like they want you to turn on your TV?
Oh, that's why TV is free...
Big business will charge you any way they can. And they'll usually make you watch ads at the same time. Ads that they charged someone else to put there.
The only reason I can think of for sharing music across wireless is to actually give the music to them. If they put on such arbitrary limits, why not just play it for them?
From the perspective of a musician, I'm happy when people share copies of my band's album. If I could beam you a copy from across the room then I'd actually consider getting a wireless enabled music player! The point of recording music (for most musicans anyway) is so that people can enjoy it, not to turn a profit. Here... If you like it, then have it!

Does anyone know what Canadian pricing will be? I haven't found mention of it... I'd be happy with $250 but I'm scared that it'll be higher because of the exchange rate. I'm also hoping that the release date is the same. I usually don't jump on board right at a product release like this.
With today's rates (roughly), 25000 yen converts to $235 CDN but $250 USD converts to $280. I'm still going to get a Wii without a doubt (regardless of the awful name), but $280 plus $100 for another controller and game is a big jump from the $199 price tag that people have been tossing around.
Didn't have much success on the DC, and if I remember correctly the controllers broke fairly easily. But Nintendo has managed to sell games like Donkey Konga so Samba De Amigo isn't much more of a stretch, especially if no extra hardware is required!
Any idea what percent of the populace knows little enough to be swayed by this?
Most?
I don't know if you've tried talking about net neutrality to anyone, but in my experience it has not gone well. Other than a couple fellow programmers, I've had to explain what it is and what it means to pretty much everyone I've mentioned it to.
Administrator is indeed less powerful than SYSTEM. However, Administrator is equivalent to a user on the sudoers list and/or with group write access to system directories. SYSTEM is the correct equivalent to root.
You make a strong point, but so does the author of the article. He defines root as the most powerful user that can login and work as. Then Administrator would be root since SYSTEM cannot login.
Of course we're not winning... This system stops you from breaking the CSS.
If you copy a DVD by breaking the CSS and re-encoding it, you've got a completely DRM free disk. You can do whatever you want with it, and copy it with any burning software. It becomes clean data. This new system will let you burn copies of that same disk, except they re-encrypt it for you and re-apply the DRM. Isn't that nice of them?
Sony simply isn't trusted any more by just about everybody!
That's narrow minded and inaccurate. Nobody who reads Slashdot or Digg trusts Sony anymore. But walk into your local gaming store and as the sales guy/girl if there's any problem with Sony. Do the same for a music store and an electronics retailer.
Contrary to the slew of articles you see online, this kind of thing gets very little mainstream media coverage. The coverage it does get doesn't compare to Sony/Playstation ads and strong foothold in the consumer electronics and media business.
Yeah, I use something similar to that too. Except it's not based on the OS that's already infected. No chance of spread or replication when you're accessing C:\ via/mnt.
The "(Leonardon) Da Vinci referece = promotion of lame movie" stance I shall ignore.
People who cared about art cared about Da Vinci before. Now that the book/movie has hit American (and subsequently lots of other parts of the world unfortunately) pop culture, everyone all of a sudden has an interest in this particular great master. It's sad but predictably true. This would never have gotten the press, or possibly would have even happened at all, had it not been for the book/film.
*deep sigh*
Twenty years ago people were all the time telling me that the biggest problem with unix was all the different versions
Well guess what, it's 20 years later, and do you know what the biggest complaint and resistance I get when talking to people about Linux? "It's so fragmented and spread out, I don't know what to choose or where to find what I'm looking for."
I love Linux. I like the compatibility and reliablity of Java. But I do think that a fork of Java by another one of the big guys would undermine most of what makes it a good language to write your applications in. As has been said above, are good in most cases, but I do believe that this is an exception...
But the Saturn was far ahead if it's time. People were still happy with their SNESs and whatever when Saturn was released.
PS3 may still have a chance, but IMHO it's all the delays that are going to kill them. Mind you, all the bad press and all the BLU-RAY/HDDVD garbage can't help... And the lame controller... Ok, maybe they're in trouble...
This is sheer madness. I use a piece of software called "The Gimp 2.0" but I have never once heard anyone make fun of it. "Gimp" means disabled where I grew up, why would you call a piece of software 'disabled?' Who cares? No one because it kicks ass and it's a free alternative solution to photoshop.
Oh really? I know one person who refuses to use the software profesionally because it is a slang term for disabled.
People do care. That's why there's so much thought put into names. They're important.
what about maps like de_cpl_mill (nee de_clan1_mill) and other cpl maps that were emblazoned with the CPL logo? does that not count as advertising, or does the cpl have a special agreement?
Am I the only one who has zero idea what this guy is talking about?

Must... resist... bad... jokes...
My kingdom for mod points right now...

I think we just figured out who's going to win in HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray...
I don't know if you've tried talking about net neutrality to anyone, but in my experience it has not gone well. Other than a couple fellow programmers, I've had to explain what it is and what it means to pretty much everyone I've mentioned it to.
Because that tiny percentage is growing, and it is growing at an increasing rate...
I guess I missed the memo where we were told that we could refer to Nintendo as "Ninty" and expect to be understood...
Of course we're not winning... This system stops you from breaking the CSS.

Rain Rain Revolution?
Or they'd just rather spend the funding they do have on content and journalists, rather than software...
IMHO what makes this interesting isn't money, it's that a huge technology-centric organization like the CBC can use OSS and that it works great!

First things I see: - Slow as hell - Non-standard scroll bar hard to figure out - Search results returning weird things No thank you MS. Try again.
Have you ever used a trackball for gaming? I haven't, but I don't imagine it would be very effective.
I have.
It's kinda like trying to control a fighter plane with an Atari controller...
