Note that word "commodity", confusing geeks world wide. It means distinguished only by price. Um, not exactly.
Commodity -noun, plural -ties. 1. an article of trade or commerce, esp. a product as distinguished from a service. 2. something of use, advantage, or value. 3. Stock Exchange. any unprocessed or partially processed good, as grain, fruits, and vegetables, or precious metals.
My grandmother, on the other hand, couldn't give a rats ass about having the choice for AmigaOS Phoenix, and, in fact, it will confuse the hell out of people who have no interest or need to learn about all of those things That is correct superficially, but really short-sighted.
The fact is, people don't know about OSes because they've been force-fed one OS since DOS. If it were common place to have a selection of OSes at the time of purchase, even your grandmother would have enough knowledge to select from a *simple* list, such as "Mac OSX, Windows Vista Home, Ubuntu" by comparing features.
I don't know an axle from a spark plug, but I'm still able to compare car features and purchase one that's right for me. The only reason that is true is because there is choice, and has been for a long time. If there were say, different models of FORD, but FORD was the only car manufacturer around, I wouldn't be able to choose an appropriate model either, and probably wouldn't have to, being force fed FORD's "Car; Home Edition".
P.S. I'm a little tired of the "My grandmother couldn't give a rats ass and doesn't know enough to choose an OS" argument. I'm willing to bet that even though your grandmother doesn't know the Interrupts used in the Linux kernel, she could very well look at an objective comparison of features between windows and linux from a consumer stand-point and choose appropriately. You don't have to know how the damned kernel works to know whether one OS works better for spreadsheets and running games than another.
Stop Thinking Like A Geek For Five Seconds When Talking About Laymen Computer Users.
Killing people for the sake of the bottom line is not only acceptable but also preferable! Hooray to capitalism, by which the blackness of any bottom line comes first in front of the life of a human being First off, welcome to capitalism.
Secondly, when you rape/murder/molest a child/steal on a grand-scale [such as Enron execs], you cease you be "human" and are more like a rabid animal. We shoot rabid animals because they're dangerous.
Thirdly, stop with this ridiculous "sanctity of life" stuff. A human life is not valuable simply because it exists. That's a bunch of self-serving crap.
Or you could try galeon. Configurable smart bookmark searches integrated into the toolbar, slim, sleek interface (their motto is "the web and only the web"), better configurability than epiphany and it integrates seamlessly into GNOME.
a lot of programmers only use a part of Gnome (GTK+) instead of using the whole environment Yep. I did that. Being able to use only what you need is a strength, not a hindrance. I wrote an app for asterisk that my company needed. They needed it to run in windows, so I built it in GTK+ and only GTK+ so that I could port it to win32 without going crazy trying to deal with porting gnome stuff as well.
If (and I'm assuming it is not the case and if you wanted to you could use only QT) you must use the entire KDE framework to build an app, well that locks you in to using all of KDE's libraries doesn't it? [I've never programmed for KDE so I'm not saying this is the case]
What if I only wanted to use GTK+ and say, some other specific part of GNOME, like GConf, but that's all I wanted? I can do that, thanks to the modular way the libraries are set up in GNOME/GTK+. Hell, I can even use stuff like Pango without using all of GTK+! If you ask me, they did it right. Yelling at the GNOME guys because you need to include 5 libraries and 5 header files instead of one just tells me you're a lazy programmer.
Insane Iraq policies driving up oil prices Ah, but they're not so insane if the goalis to drive up oil prices. Bush may be a complete sock puppet idiot, but the people controlling his strings are not, and they only have one thing in mind people; Money.
Apparently you don't have many friends in the bar or resturant business.
Resturants have *always* had large no-smoking sections if they allowed smoking at all. That's due to the food thing, and suggesting there are *no* resturants (even before the smoking bans) that had smoke-free sections is absolutely ludicrous (or trolling).
Now as for bars, before the ban there were always niche bars that specifically targetted the "no smoking" crowd either as a business decision, or as the preference of the bar owner. Here in Massachusetts, before the ban, there were several bars just in my area that had a strict no smoking policy.
I would be very hard-pressed to believe that there isn't a non-smoking option for a bar goer pretty much anywhere in the country.
We are a country that has Christians and are founded on Christian principles I hate this sectarian self-serving BS.
No We're Not. This country was found by men of many different religious ideals. We have very specific, plainly stated separation of church and state (which is quickly ebbing away [Thanks Right-Wingers!!!]). A good portion of the men who wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were Atheists. Seriously, do your research and stop trying to "own" the country with your ridiculous and archaic beliefs by saying the country was founded by any particular sect of religion.
A simple google search (try this one for instance) will prove you wrong. Hell, some of the founding fathers were actually incredibly against religion in general, citing a slew of negative impacts religion has had on societies all throughout history.
I hate being "lumped up" into other people's belief systems. "Oh you're American? Guess you're Christian then."
As a musician in a local metal band (shameless plug), I completely and wholeheartedly disagree with your post.
Local acts that do not intend on being "studio musicians" have two things on their mind: 1) Get exposure 2) Sell merchandise/cds/tickets Of course, both of those feed into each other for the ultimate goal of getting signed.
Exposure allows us to pack clubs and sell shirts and cds so that we can continue to pack clubs and sell more shirts and cds, create our new albums (recording music cost THE BAND money people!!), etc.
I, and I'm sure I speak for everyone in my band, would be absolutely ecstatic if the radio stations in my area, or really anywhere, would start playing our tunes on air for absolutely no payment to us.
Now, of course, I'm not saying we finish a tune and immediately start thinking of "now what kind of merchandise can we shovel down the throats of our fans?", we're not Gene Simmons [that guy turned being a "sellout" into a freaking art form], but making money off of ticket sales and merchandise to keep the band going far outweighs trying to make money off of extorting money from internet radio companies.
I think most artists agree that they'd rather have broadcasters pay nothing to play their music, as that only makes it more difficult for them to expose and promote good artists.
In terms of usability and ease of use from a programmer's perspective, the two libraries are practically identical. It is fairly trivial to create an abstraction layer that provides common functionality between the two libraries.
However, from my experiences and (limited) knowledge of both libraries, DirectX does have more features and does develop at a quicker pace than OpenGL. DirectX is owned and developed by one single proprietary entity with greed as incentive for a quick development pace (negative tone unintentional), whereas OpenGL is an open standard with an organization body to oversee it's development, which tends to be slower (read: more calculating and cautious about what they add/keep out of the library).
That being said, OpenGL doesn't aim specifically at games (which is DirectX's primary intention), but aims to be a general Graphics Library. It's used for other things besides games, such as medical software.
The performance of the libraries depends on a huge number of different variables; OS, graphics card/driver, aptitude of the programmers to utilize the specifics of each libraries' strenghts, etc.
This proof relegates god to the role of the die. That's interesting. In my teenage years I came up with a simple theory that most phrases containing the word 'God' can be changed to have the exact same meaning by replacing the word 'God' with the phrase 'the randomness of life' (using a little grammatical liberty).
For instance: "Thank God the storm didn't knock that tree down on my car!" "Thank the randomness of life the storm didn't knock that tree down on my car!"
Sometimes it doesn't "sound" right, such as in "God has a plan", but usually these phrases are nonsensical bull to begin with.
I could be wrong here, but speaking as a UI designer (among other things), doesn't intuitive actually mean "I looked at it for the first time and could figure it out easily"?
the reason that so many companies choose the Windows development? It just works
Wrong-o! The reason why companies choose windows development is because that's what everyone else is running. Period. It has nothing to do with whether it "just works" or not, it has to do with who uses what, and as a professional linux user/developer it pains me terribly to admit that pretty much everyone uses windows.
I would prefer my child to learn facts about war from a good history book, not from a video game.
I disagree to the extent where I really don't see the difference. If a game has accurate facts in it, then there's no harm, in fact there's quite a lot of good from kids learning from video games.
I am a bit of a WWII buff and I initially learned a lot about some of the battles from battlefield 1942 and other WWII shooters which were later expounded upon by books and tv like the history channel. Thanks to Aces High II I can actually list a ton of vehicles and planes from WWII, their weaknesses and strengths, etc.
There's nothing wrong with learning from games, they actually make it fun to learn.
Seriously, games actually have been proven to have a lot of positive effects on kids and adults alike. Everything from hand-eye coordination to better problem solving skills. Not only that, but it has a great social aspect as well. You learn to play with other people, against other people, how to win and loose with grace, etc.
Not to mention, who wants to be the only kid on the block without an XBOX 360 or Wii?
But Oracle is bad and wrong and supporting Oracle is therefore bad and wrong.
Being evil is wrong. And bad. There should be a new, stronger word for being evil. Like badwrong, or badong. Yes, being evil is badong. From this moment, I will stand for the opposite of being evil: gnodab.
But seriously;
Red Hat fanatics are bar none the worst fanboys in my ever-so-humble opinion.
Please. What a bunch of self-serving bullshit, straight from the mouth of an ubuntu fanboy. The worst fanboy fanatics I've found aren't the ones for a distribution, but the ones against one; for instance, the anti-redhad crowd.
Interestingly, I find debian people to be the biggest anti-anything-but-my-distribution people around. Personally I'm sick and fucking tired of the whole thing. Debian/Ubuntu kicks ass. Fedora kicks ass. I've used both for a long time. They're different. Shut up and deal with it. Oh, and keep your unsubstantiated fanboy opinions to your damned selves.
Being a fanatic about anything is badong. That goes for politics, religion (hell especially religion), technology, etc.
Why can't we all just chill the hell out and let people enjoy what they enjoy without having to badmouth anything we don't like?
There's just so much crap in your post, I... can't help but refute it! God Help Me.
But Red Hat users, which I stopped being around 6.1, are clinging desperately to a distribution that doesn't care about them unless they have shitpiles of money. That goes for Fedora, too.
Wholly Way-To-Speak-Out-Of-Your-Ass batman! You obviously have NO idea how Fedora/RedHat works these days!
How could a distribution built primarily buy a community not care about anyone without money? That doesn't make sense at all! Fedora is built by people like you and me, well, maybe not you, and then RedHat takes it and sells it in a more enterprise oriented way. RedHat has shown time and time again how much they care about the community and technology. Please dude, take your crap and shovel it somewhere else.

"Done."
"This is a real pain to do!"
"Fixed."
Etc.

Just my 2 cents.
I've fiddled with both.
In terms of usability and ease of use from a programmer's perspective, the two libraries are practically identical. It is fairly trivial to create an abstraction layer that provides common functionality between the two libraries.

I agree with the parent. The reason why ubuntu won't sell out is because it was started and is being maintained by a billionaire.
I'll bite.
Because I don't want windows.

There's a gui to upgrade the distro version???
It seems that ubuntu is the first distro to really "just get it" when it comes to the desktop!
All hail the New Hope for Linux on the Desktop!

I don't seem to have exact change... Do you have change for $103.262210?
