  1. Re:Its Radio vs. Records all over again. on Will You Stream Or Download Your Mobile Music? · · Score: 1

Yeah, I'd agree there's plenty of room for both at home, work, or any fixed-connection setting, but for mobile use I'll take downloaded-and-stored over streamed-and-cached any day of the week.

With a cache of a spotify stream, for instance, will it be possible to tell how much music you have cached up in reserve? What happens when the next hour+ leg of your journey is through the countryside with bairly a 2g GSM signal, let alone a 3G signal, and your backup cache runs out?
Sod that. Plus, that's not even considering the total inefficiency of streaming the same content over and over again, why not just download it once?

To answer the article's question: I can't see myself streaming music to my portable player anytime soon. Capacity is high enough to be plenty for a trip of pretty much any length, storage is cheap, and mobile internet access is patchy at best. Whilst on the move, I'll take my locally stored, decent bit-rate, painstakingly tagged audio, cheers.

    Stream to find.
Once found, buy, download, store, archive. Then use as you wish. (You could even do it in that order, if you were so inclined)

Throw gigabytes of ram and a modern graphics card into a computer, and suddenly it becomes apparent that the processor is really not the bottleneck.

I did my whole CS degree on that rig, and not once did I ever think; 'shit, you know what I need, another core...' .

If in the original film, the 1st Terminator sent back had indeed completed it's mission and killed Sarah Connor, then that would have ensured Skynet never gets/will be created.

    • Sarah Connor dies before crushing metal motherfucker #1.
    • Chip never gets found.

Basically, you vote for the party you want to represent you, and they choose from their ranks someone to do just that. And since labour was voted in, we get a labour prime minister for the duration of the term.

Secondly, the alternative at the moment is infinitely worse, in the shape of a vapid, bandwagon jumping Eatonian and his gang of old boy chronies. Privatisation of things that shouldnâ(TM)t be privatised (read NHS), taxation policies designed to keep rich people rich, and loose regulation for companies are all things this country really doesnâ(TM)t need, and would be instigated in a heartbeat.

I've tried to switch a number of times in that last 2 to 3 years, whilst i still have the time and inclination to learn, but each time i've had to return to windows pretty much full time, and run linux in a nice tidy little virtual box VM, beacuse half (almost literally) the stuff I (and many others) use with my computer just doesnt function. Dont get me wrong, if i only wanted to web browse, edit, listen to music and watch video, then it would almost certainly have replaced windows on my machines, but thats not all people do on their computers...

I'm not talking about exotic, out-of-this-world-mega-hardware, i just mean things like mobile phones, any mouse purchased post 2004 with more than 3 buttons, TV cards, sound cards, printers, and dual head graphics. The state of affairs is still such that I (yes, I know it may be different for others...) cant sync tasks or transfer music to my phone, print a map or watch TV using my hardware. Nevermind getting things to output on 2 monitors, which was just a whole host of unpleasentness. All of which makes switching impossible, for me and I'm sure many others.

Sure, you can try one of the myriad work arounds and fixes on forums, but they rarely if ever work properly. So, whilst the software is important, I'm convinced that it's availability of native drivers for common consumer hardware that is more important than the current version of photoshop...

Until linux drivers are as common as mac drivers, i.e. available in the box, or alongside the other 2 on the drivers download page, people just wont be confident enough to switch. Or at least people like me. And im a feckin CS student for christ sake. Sadly, claims that your hardware will 'just work' are way, way off...

It's utterly selfish because it's only based on what you think would keep you from getting addicted and not even what is capable of getting you addicted. Not quite sure I understand this sentence. It quite clearly was/is capable of getting him and others addicted, and of course its based on what he thinks would help him, what else was he gonna suggest? Basically, as far as I can tell, warning lables on addictive shit is a good idea. Be it gambling/wow, whatever. People dropping their lives, cash, home, jobs, family or anything else for that matter on this stuff is good for neither them nor society in general, and any reduction of it is fine by me.

Even on arguably the most obvious point, the UI, there have been massive improvements, such as the context sensitive stuff, thumbnails in directories (not seen in 95/98), useful tooltips etc etc.

Next, they 2000/XP (not sure about vista) handles things like DLL's, which, if I understand it correctly are now managed dynamically, with each application using its own. As opposed to back in the 'good' old days, where applications would and could fuck about with DLL's breaking both the OS and Apps on occasions.

Then, you have the big one, hardware management. Things like USB drives, CD drives, cameras, printers, whatever, were sometimes nightmarish to set up.

Basically, my point is, in my opinion ease of use of computers has improved beyond measure, and the RAM and CPU cycle cost is more than worth it.

I just feel the need to vent and complain about how every decent action film has to be subjected to this kind of crap.

There are so many films I have to pretend don't exist just to stay sane.

    The usual list here:

Aliens: should've stopped at 2. From the highly shit crash landing on a prison planet, all the way up to that mother alien having her head sucked out of the window, Alien 3 and 4 sucked arse. Properly shambolic films. An alien film needs suspense, or marines with pulse rifles, i'll take either, i'm not fussy.
    Robocop: should've stopped at 1.
AvP: Complete train wreck of a film.
The matrix: Now, they really could've done without fucking up that film, it was great, but now somehow, it just seems a bit shit thanks to the vast turds that were numbers 2 and 3 completely ruining everything.
Star-wars, obviously the main offender in this category with those 3 abortions.

The one I thought had got away with it, and made a decent stab at number 3 was Terminator. Sure the 'terminatrix' was a bit shit, but there had obviously been a bit of time and effort put into the script, showing how an anonymous mess of a human being got to be in charge of the resistance, finishing quite well.

Assuming this story is true, and eventually comes to fruition, I'm going to hope against the odds that it's not a shameless cluster-fuck off a film, cashing in on the good work done previously by others.

Also, what happened to really fucking good action films, eh? Reading down the 'news' part of TFA's publishing site, I see Indian Jones, Star Wars and Terminator mentioned in the headlines. When did the film producing monkeys lose the ability to make decent films, instead of re-hashing good stuff from decades ago?

Something like Die Hard, or Aliens, films that weren't complete wank? I'm struggling, and the only half decent stuff I can come up with is the Bourne series, which are great, and as previously mentioned, the Matrix.

Oh, for the record, comic book movies aren't the answer, you can take spider man 3 and shove it up your arse for all I care.

Maybe the 'Printed Word' industry saw what would happen if the turned their content electrical.

Instead of going to a bookshop, and reading a few pages or the back cover blurbs of a number of books, people would end up simply downloading a copy onto a PDA/ebook reader or their computers, and end up, at best, buying only a small percentage of those books.

I know this is what happens with films, use the pre-release torrents, find out if the film/tv show is worth watching, and if so, add it to your collection of legit, paid for entertainment.

The actual 'owning' of a physical book/DVD, whatever, will never be replaced, but with free, easily obtainable copies of stuff all over the place, weeding out the crap is a lot easier.
