  1. Re:Why pay for what you already have? on CD Ripping Services Compared · · Score: 1

This makes it easier. Also, you can rip all of your CDs to lossless (which can be a lot harder to find on P2P networks and takes longer to download.)

This seems like a really great idea for a holiday gift for a friend or relative with lots of older CDs or stuff that may be harder to find on P2P. Just get them like a 100-CD gift certificate and they are shipped back DVDs or even an external hard drive with all of their music, album covers, and correctly labeled songs. An MP3 jukebox would be a great way to rekindle interest in CDs that are currently sitting on shelves collecting dust, and would make a cool gift for anyone who likes music.

    - Question: "My wireless Commodore64 controller interferes with my neighbour's newly bought lawnmower vehicle, can he sue me for every time his brakes fail?"

Every raid the FBI makes raises the bar a little bit. Eventually could this cause some other spammers to rethink their choice of lifestyle? Or alternatively, cause more spammers to move offshore, with the risk of having your entire netblock effectively shut off to mail servers?

Cracking down on spammers by the FBI is great. If they do business in the USA, it becomes a question of when, not if they will be shut down and in jail. We can handle the filtering and education part of the War on Spam, and the FBI can handle theirs.

On the contrary, I believe the absence of software patents is a good thing. It insures that any GPL'ed code will be completely free of any patent BS, making adoption by corporations more likely, since they don't have to worry about frivolous lawsuits from what should already be Free software. End users should know exactly what they are getting when software is unter the GPL.

Haha, so the real answer was: the SMS was typed in quicker, but the network latency of sending an SMS message made it arrive 12 seconds too late :)

    Anyways, here's the breakdown:
Morse message: 948 units of time / 50 elements per word (PARIS) = ~19 words / 1.5 minutes: 12.67 wpm.

    SMS message: ~23 words / 1.8 minutes: 12.78 wpm.

(Special thanks to KEdit find/replace and wc)

The SMS slang version is only saves 15% from the original message, which is also interesting.

Therefore, the whole test is bogus - they take the same amount of time. (actually, I bet the ops sent the code at ~40wpm, but it took a while to write it down onto paper. A better test would have been to have the sms receiver convert back into proper english :-)

But, yeah, morse code is awesome anyways. Another LOL from TFA: "I send about three messages a day," she said. "I used to send lots more but I ran out of credit." :) Remember, kids, with Morse Code there is no "credit"!

How would that statement sound in the mind of a PHB? "Linux = doomed software companies" is a particularly nasty association when making a platform decision (even though going with Linux was probably the right solution, rather than continuing with NetWare.)

I don't know if they can pull out of the slump, but we should support Novell any way we can, as it stands as one of the largest allies Linux (and the OSS community) has today. To see Novell's downfall will definitely weaken Linux's corporate desktop offering.
