yes we are here. Yes. I've been around since before the time of ID numbers and ads on Slashdot sonny and when linux was just a whisper on the internet.
I'm done being upset by reading anything here. The more people get on here, the more it seems to mimic the "unwashed masses" the "enlightened" community here so frowns upon. So please carry on.
People need to realize that the science and math fields have a history of misogyny (I don't blame them, it has been a All Boys Club for a long time) and these kind of remarks bring salt to a wound that hasn't quite healed. So how did you learn your resistor color codes?
That's because you're your own Project Manager, QA, and Development all rolled into one. Fine I'll bite that you do a well enough job on your -own- hours doing whatever you need to do to get them done. Large projects don't work that way. You have -teams- that are segregated into different sections of the project. The only person who has a sense of the overall picture is really the project manager. When you're working at a small section of the project day and night without rest, you will make mistakes that won't show up until the pieces come together. That's where the real cost shows up - when QA gets in and everyone returns to find and fix the mistakes. Your project is only as strong as your weakest link, and he's the guy in team section "C" which is understaffed so he constantly makes mistakes after mistakes which WILL bring down other people's work. No one likes their work then. Everyone on Slashdot must be private entrepreneurs, because no one seems to grasp how corporate management works in the "Real World". I frankly don't understand how EA keeps their PMs with such turnovers and attrition rates of the developers. I suspect a lot of politics of the "blame game" gets played in that kind of environment as well (where all faults are funneled down to the developement section) which is probably why people leave. It's not fun when you work so hard, it's especially not fun if you're unappreciated for it. That's usually the straw that breaks the back.
There's no reason why my vote (CA resident) should ever be worth less than anyone else's in the country, just because I live in a certain region of the nation. I am a citizen am I not? Yet, when I vote dem, I know at a certain point, it doesn't make a iota of difference, whereas every vote in OH counts.
How can you ever justify that?
I also feel for those voting Rep in CA. I'm sure it's something both of us can agree on. The electoral system must go. It was an elitist system to prevent mob mentality from choosing the wrong, stupid candidate during the early years of this nation. We've just shown we can do that perfectly well with the electoral college system anyway. Jokes aside, all people are generally more informed and educated from the time of the Founding Fathers. It's time we get rid of this archaic system and do what a true democrazy does - 1 vote, 1 count, per 1 citizen.
Oh and you represent those in the "red states" I had no idea everyone there was so well-educated with multiple degrees, and versed in politics. My deepest apologies for assuming that the people who elected this buffoon back into office were actually midwestern, naive, ignorant, but extremist Christian folks!
People diss "liberals" and California, but a state that holds the 5th largest economy in the world doesn't just get there by farming, k? Maybe you should give some credit to educated "liberals" that what and whom we are voting for may be due to some very valid reasons?
And what makes you think rampantly exploiting our natural resources (which is pretty much all this country has to offer anyway...raw material..we're not too far down from Russia are we?" is such a good idea?
I'm tired of people bickering without opening their ears. this country used to have dialogue. I remember when I first voted (Clinton/Dole) I thought they both were -great- intelligent people. Even if either of them became president, I had faith.
I'm a Christian by the way, even though people think liberal Christian is an oxymoron, which is a symptom of a huge problem in this country: pigeonholing people into neat little "left" and "right" boxes. I don't believe in a Holy War, as the conservatives are touting this battle in Iraq, I believe in fiscal frugality in my home AND in my country, which this adminstration has failed to provide. I don't believe in abortion, but I believe the gov'mint should get their damn noses out of personal lives, including what I believe in, whom I marry, and what I do in my bedroom. My parents will be on Social Security soon, and you think I won't get personal when their benefits dwindle to nothing? Everyone has their personal reasons pal, not just yours. Who do you think supports labor unions and work compensation, and work safety more? You think the Grand Old Party? And finger-pointing at liberals and laughing is all good and fun (yes I do pot, have greasy hair, bum on the street, and name all our kids Windmist uh huh, ok), but when we point at you to laugh, suddenly feathers just ruffle and "that's not right". Give me a fucking break.
I can't believe no one can see what they're doing...
they're out of their natural resources. Hacking is the only way they can get $$$ now. You just see. When they get upgraded to Black Lotus, nukes are going to start flying.../obscure
ok what I read Scientific American and I consider it doable for the masses. What the heck is New Scientist?
And you find the Drudge Report to be credible? why not quote the Enquirer as well? around the same rank aren't they?
Lord knows, I never understand how people think it's so legitimate because it's on the 'net and linkable. Ohhh..I hyperlinked it. Now it's a respectable reference! Blogs too!
Those are pretty weak references pal. Might as well link to the heritage foundation while at it eh?
I didn't think I was an addict. I now think otherwise. It's true I -can- go for weeks, months without a cup of coffee. But I do start craving it, especially after a meal for that "after meal, nice dark cup of coffee to top it off"
My friend stopped smoking and she said it's not that it's hard to stop, it's hard to keep yourself from going back. Everytime she's around people who smoke, or had a delicious fulfilling meal, she craves a smoke.
I can deal with it. Thankfully (or unthankfully) I get very nauseus with too much caffeine. I suppose I OD easily as well, so I drink one or two cup a day at most.
Amen. Yup that's how it's usually been. The reactions really are anger or attraction. I've been a gamer (I'm a female as well) for a long time and when guys find out your sex (I won't advertise, but if they ask I won't lie) they get competitive, determined to kill you at every turn, or start talking to you in that different "tone" (sort of like the virtual version of "How YOU doin'")
Frankly, most of the guys are gents. But that awkwardness is there and I can't say I like it much, even sometimes among my clan buds. Before voice comm, it didn't matter, it was easier to go incognito. After all, it's really just about the game. After the popular usage of comms though, it's harder to avoid these "social" effects. I'm sure it's much more obvious in LAN parties and gaming competitions.
Easy solution: guys get used to have girls in their midst. All these issues become totally moot.
"Sources say the band has expressed concerns about undercutting album sales. "
Yeah, longing for the days when people were forced to purchase an album for the sake of hearing perhaps one or two of their songs. This makes me ill, in their eyes, it's simply 12% of $20 is > 12% of $1.00 IMO. Oh yes it's undercutting the worthless "album" sales because the albums these days are such crap. If they truly believed their songs to be worth every penny, they wouldn't have such fear about losing album sales.
You assume too much. I don't know how much you pay for your internet access but it's not terribly expensive to get a monthly connection, perhaps not unlimited, but certainly enough to shop or browse for awhile. It is a luxury, yes, but in this age, it's a luxury that's getting fairly commonplace, kind of like automobiles.
Since this affects where I live (SoCal) I'd like mention that I, as well as others here in LA, pay 8.25% sales tax on EVERYTHING we buy, including food, drugs, etc. It's one of the highest around and certainly, if that internet shipping charge is cheaper than the tax that would be placed on the purchase (which is one reason why I buy a lot from online) it doesn't take much reasoning power (regardless of your income) to see that buying online (and waiting a week) may be worth it.
And if you're really rich, I wouldn't think you would care much about sales tax of your purchases. really, wouldn't instant gratification be worth the local purchase anyway? the people who actually benefited IMO are those who did pinch and shop carefully but this will take away even that small incentive of online shopping.
When I first got Chimera referred from an enthusiastic email, I was sorely disappointed. The latest version didn't lure me back either, I ended up dumping it as well. It didn't run any faster than Mozilla nor IE. I hate IE but it was the only thing that would run speedily on my 500mhz ibook, but I chose to bear Mozilla's slow loading because overall it's a better browser.
Now I'm using Safari and cannot believe the speed the pages load. I always thought it was because of my slow processor or because the notebook was so outdated but it doesn't seem to be the case. Kudos to the Safari team, there's finally an alternative that is actually fast and good.
Those of you who are saying "oh this is bad because it legitimizes DMCA yadda yadda, seem to be missing a crucial point - that an INNOCENT man has been set free thanks to the legal system and the jury (and judge) with enough sense to see the absurdity of the charge in the first place.
I don't know a lot about the law but how can this possibly be a bad thing? Getting the DMCA taken out should be everyone's responsibility, and this guy shouldn't have been sacrified in a prolonged legal battle just because it would have benefited the "Cause" Get a grip and some empathy.
According to the commentary and the biography of Tolkien in the extended DVDs, Tolkien absolutely HATED his works to be represented allegorical. That was one thing he was very adamant about and he wanted the works to stand as they are. For instance, it mentions how some people used the Ring as an allegory for nuclear weapons during that era and Sauron as Hitler, etc. which got the author pretty riled.
The closest intention Tolkien had was of producing an original English myth, since as a professor he knew that a lot of the English legends and folklores were actually bastardizations of the imports from other countries (like the idea of King Arthur). So yeah it would definitely seem Anglo since he inteded it to be very Anglo-centric material. Just as a ancient Chinese myth would be China-centric. But you can't say they are maliciously racist.
BTW, I couldn't read that article - the link didn't work for me.
OMG I LOVE YOU! Well...ok maybe not you but the site anyway!:) I have been starved of music for the last couple of years boycotting record companies but not quite satisfied with the indie fares. This site is terrific! The music is actually GOOD! I just got 2 cds from them and this is going to be my one of my favorite sites! Thanks a lot for the heads up.

I completely agree with you. I own both paying subscription to GS and IGN and the booth babes pics were just an embarrassment. It's bad nuff E3 even had them in the first place, but to pander the pictures on the front page for the rest of the horny male teens, well...but, wait, it's about the games right? Sure..it's about the games. And articles in PlayBoy are good too.
I've been playing games for 15 years now, and I have to say, the industry has become a lot more sexified (is that a word?). Before it was just a lot of side scrollers and a boy or a girl could be good at that finger-twitching. Now it's just "take your Sims and go to the corner, m'kay?" while the guys drool over polygonal boobs bouncing on the screen.
Oh but there're the excuses. Let's see, "the industry is geared toward men" "more men can afford to get games so they buy more" "more men are programmers so they program what they want" "women don't like games!" "women don't understand games" "women think it's a waste of time (maybe pouring $$ down an industry that consistently abases women is a waste)"
It's funny how some guys can recite them with religious fervor and believe in them like a zealot. That's the only way to believe the industry is right as it is now.
I've actually heard of a woman who suffered an anuerysm while riding a coaster and died. She had no previous illness/weak heart but I guess her brain couldn't take it. A while back there was an article that described how the headache you get after you get off could be triggered by the mild aneuryms in your brain. I'm not sure if this affects a lot of people but I DO get headaches so I tend to stay away from them. I don't know how this relates to the legalization though. I'm assuming it's the same for skydivers, bungee jumpers, etc. I guess coasters are becoming more "extreme":)
Definitely. It's hard to believe, but there was a time when NVidia cards were the butt of the jokes when it came to graphics cards. 3dfx was king. (EVERYONE owned some kind of a voodoo card) Then they pulled ALL support, put their stuff only on that piss-poor STB boards and suddenly it was forgotten. NVidia earned their top dog spot with good cards, but it helped that the biggest opponent killed their own golden goose.
When I call the DSL tech people, it's usually the LAST RESORT, only after figuring that most likely, it's not my problem. Nonetheless, it's still MY responsibility to make it somewhat easier for the other person on the line to figure out.
Which is why #1: I always boot to Windows. They support ONLY Windows and even if I have the modem directly connected to the router to the linux firewall, then used by a Mac, I make it so that the modem is connected to Windows. Why? Because they don't support anything else and to ask for anything else (*nix) is just a waste of their time and mine.
#2: I'm courteous. I've just spent 3 hours re-checking my lines and trying different configurations. Nothing. No ping, because the line is dead from their side. That still doesn't give me the right to start acting like an ass to the tech guy, who's probably heard "Why can't I connect?!!!" screamed at him the last 5 hours. I found that most of the time, if I'm polite, and calmly explain the problems they are usually polite and helpful in return. One guy spent over 1 hour resolving my situation. Yes, it was their fault (they'd screwed up) but it doesn't hurt to say "Thanks for the help" once awhile.
I've found doing these two things (really just forms of common courtesy) works almost all the time.
How is it wasting money to read a website? Do you not buy magazines to get information? But you don't consider that "wasting" money? Just because the same information is in a format which is much more accessible and on-time than regular print, doesn't make it suddenly worth $0.00.
I *read* so my next investment of $50-60 game is most likely worth it. That's the cost of knowledge I get and I'd be happy to pay $2/month to get it. Just because anything's on the internet doesn't mean it's worthless. Instead of buying that next glitz-fest, hyped up but completely worthless game, just invest it in for buying a year's worth of information. That is certainly a better "waste" of $$$.
I think you've hit it in the target. There're probably tons of people who love books and read by authors rather than just the books themselves (like me:) ) I borrowed tons of book from the library when I was a kid, which led to purchases from the bookstore when the author came out with new material, or if I wanted to have a copy of my own. Even now, I habitually browse bookstores or if not possible, the bookstore websites for books I can buy.
So what if prominently placed USED signs make people purchase used books more than the new ones. If it increases book purchases overall (and those books were NEW before it became USED), I think everyone really wins in the end.
People needs to stop thinking so much about the short-term effect and the profit margin of NOW. Getting more people to read at all is a GOOD thing, and allows the authors to have an audience to write for.
This is a little OT, but I think the real crime is in the school textbooks + monopolizing campus bookstores. Really, paying 20% for a once used textbook to sell back for 95% of the new price is robbery exploiting kids who have little money anyway. Why don't people complain about that?
You have got to be kidding me? So if we bring in our own cds to work to play over the stereo at our workplace, that is considered illegal? Wow, I work in a lab and we have stacks of personal cds that we pop into the stereo for everyone to hear. Or if not, we have the radio on. I had no idea we were breaking the law everytime we did that
IMO, that is the silliest thing I've heard. No doubt we're not the only ones who do that. Can (will) the RIAA go after every single workplace to sue? This is turning very ridiculous
So they have so little money but ENOUGH to buy out a very popular franchise from another company (one that they pretty much blatantly ripped off for their widely praised FFT).
I've been a fan of Square games for a loong time, but I get the sense they're developing more and more giant-corp mentality like Disney. Maybe it's a vision of things to come. I never believe a second that Square is doing this just because of their "financial" crisis.
I know someone who carries his ibook in a backpack too, and even though his is newer than mine, it's already gotten some scratches and wear on the outside. (However, the ibook works perfectly, a testament to its durability)
So are these SleevCases small enough to fit into a backpack? And how much of a hassel is it using them like straps, velcros, and the size. I'm looking at a couple of pictures on the site now and they seem like the perfect sol'n but I want to hear from someone who actually uses them.
Damn Fritz Hollings! If he was even a little _less_ evil, I would get this game.
I own nearly all Square games that made it across the Pacific but this is one I won't picking up because all I'll see when I'm playing it will be "you've done it..you're one of us...Disney 0wns j00 now.."
Gawd, couldn't anyone just tell me (or lie!) it sucks as much as Evermore?:-)

There're probably tons of people who love books and read by authors rather than just the books themselves (like me :) ) I borrowed tons of book from the library when I was a kid, which led to purchases from the bookstore when the author came out with new material, or if I wanted to have a copy of my own.
So they have so little money but ENOUGH to buy out a very popular franchise from another company
(one that they pretty much blatantly ripped off for their widely praised FFT).
I've been a fan of Square games for a loong time, but I get the sense they're developing more and more giant-corp mentality like Disney. Maybe it's a vision of things to come. I never believe a second that Square is doing this just because of their "financial" crisis.
OT question:
I know someone who carries his ibook in a backpack too, and even though his is newer than mine, it's already gotten some scratches and wear on the outside. (However, the ibook works perfectly, a testament to its durability)
So are these SleevCases small enough to fit into a backpack? And how much of a hassel is it using them like straps, velcros, and the size. I'm looking at a couple of pictures on the site now and they seem like the perfect sol'n but I want to hear from someone who actually uses them.
Damn Fritz Hollings! If he was even a little _less_ evil, I would get this game.
:-)
I own nearly all Square games that made it across the Pacific but this is one I won't picking up because all I'll see when I'm playing it will be "you've done it..you're one of us...Disney 0wns j00 now.."
Gawd, couldn't anyone just tell me (or lie!) it sucks as much as Evermore?
