    Amiga could do it, over VHS even. I remember some clever company used the advantage of Composite out (video standard) signal and made a VHS Cassette backup solution for Amiga.

    Sorry, I just can't recall the name... Of course, those days, a 20MB HD would be enough or even more than enough for everyone. Excluding animation artists and TV stations of course :-)

    Don't compare the chips designed for home with the chips designed with workstations. P4/AMD etc.

    They can act great as a beowulf machine but doesn't fit a single machine a 3d gfx artist just wanting to make his/her model drawn.

    So... Don't compare 64bit SGI architechture with 32 bit PC, home PC one.

    Itanium? I hope one day someone will compare an Itanium with Wildcat II arch... Now that will be great

    IMHO the thing you found is awesome and shouldn't be just on Slashdot messages. I mean, a spyware company run by a CC fraud guy!.. What worse it can be?!?

    IMHO Mozilla teams @netscape.com e-mail adressed guys should SUE AOL for releasing Netscape 6.0.

    Check many people who bashes Netscape 6, mostly they are 6.0 or 6.01 victims.

    It was a PR disaster for Netscape, agreed, 6.2.1 isn't "that" buggy and thinks seem to improve.

    Totally... Delete mshtml.dll (don't! oh, you can't already) and see which programs die...

    Realone player aka Realplayer 9 (they didn't bother to hide right click menu even), ICQ 200x (ads support), Winamp 2.xx minibrowser (on 3, it features mozilla rendering IF mozilla is present on system, e.g. no gecko.dll included). Not speaking about the system will be broken, AOL apps will go bye bye too. Oh, yea, "don't fix a working thing" rule, what about Realone player? Its completely different, they COULD use gecko.dll!

    As a end user, who thinks Mozilla Netscape builds aren't "that bad", I question myself like "Hm, they don't use it themselves already, why should I bother?"

    Can't they be compressed using PCM? I heard CD uses PCM compression which is non lossy but huge compared to mp3.

    I don't get one thing. The self called security specialist Steve Gibson has effected many newbies not to install Realplayer, because umm... It has GUID _support_(by default, OFF)You will hardly believe what you read after this story http://grc.com/media.htm

    As I now see, Wmedia player comes with GUID enabled by default? Which sort of a non-techie end user would "touch something which is already working" (e.g. listening to his/her radio w/o any problems)?

    My point is, besides Grc being pointless and evilly conspires Realplayer for unknown/I don't care reason, he uses this argument to call people to switch to Windows Media, which, hardly you will find a native Linux/BSD version. So, here is your answer, GUID is importmant...

    Oh, btw, people seems to miss the point that GUID is used by broadcasting companies which broadcast, not by those application vendors.

    First of all I wonder how people get shocked about those companies making evil things...

    Second is, I sure wonder how Gnucleus ( http://www.gnucleus.com ) which is a full open source program works perfectly on win32 platform isn't mentioned on messages.

    The coder guy(s) say now it has even multi-source downloading, just like fasttrack.

    There is also another problem, as those programs are closed source, how come they won't have _native_ spying? e.g. Morpheus sending current URL of IE easily from urlmon.dll to that dutch company? I mean, anyone checked it yet?

    It is creative's decision.

    Maybe you aren't fallowing that much but companies like C-Media,Philips and more are e.g. changing to 6.1 format, providing 24bit (allthough card can't produce) S/PDIF outputs for $25! The cheapo card I have from C-Media (Zoltrix brand) has real cool specs.

    I used AWE64 before, gave up both the card itself and Creative brand when I saw they offically say "it is an old card, not supported" and "upgrade to live(!)"

    Creative does what it does in every 2 years. I don't want to guess evilly but if it fallows AWE64 abandoning policy, you will see Live drivers rarely updated than never updated at all, basing them to a generic driver. (Talking about non Open Source systems/drivers of course).

    I learned a lesson. If I get real impressed by a Creative product, I remember my AWE64 nightmare on win2k than look for similar/better specs of "so called" no name, Taiwan brands.

    For whatever purpose (I don't believe it has a legal background) an American goverment agency codes a backdoor and Antivirus companies offically declare they won't detect that one.

    I want to know if it has a legal background and also how it will affect whole Internet? E.g. when that trojan "accidentally" installs to a top non-usa goverments top secret machine?

    I have been to http://www.avp.ru , they seem totally neutral for now even though you "feel" they try to mean "we will detect it, it is just another virus for us and we aren't a USA company"

    I can't believe we don't see thousands of feedbacks on this issue... An offical trojan? Seems everyone forgot there are other countries exist on the Net rather than USA...

    Latest DirectX (DX 8) comes with bunch of PNG's, I don't know their purpose.

    "Windows Update" uses dozens of PNGs.

    I and many people use/prefer it with maximum compression to send/receive screenshots, bug report screenshots.

    It isn't a "dead born" format, believe me.

    Yea, it is "unbeliavable" but a sims executable for Linux already exist.

    What happened to it is Loki Games. Loki didn't accept the "price" of license and since no other game companies like Loki on Linux, it was canceled.

    As a licensed owner of the game, it made me mad for sure. Months of watching newsgroups for a "light" for Wine compatability of the game, it of course shocked me.

    Sounds unbeliavable?

    Don Hopkins did it, a sims executable for linux natively exist and now Mandrake and Transgaming tries to run it via (ok, not emulator) Wine.

    It sounds tragi-comic to me, am I alone?

    I knew Mozillazine is close to Netscape corp but not that much. Thanks for englighting me. That was the thing I tried to mean, Mozillazine knew the story but didn't release. I said "uncovered", not that they found a thing cosmically secret but somehow didn't get reported on "main", "semi offical" "fan" site.

    BTW, congrats on patch maker as I have a chance now.

    What is that? Open source way of requesting cencor?

    As I know, Mozillaquest was always critical about Mozilla project. Agree or not, for myself I agree some of them.

    This time, about yesterday when I checked that site, I saw the article... err.. I clicked like "Heh, now how he will flame them?" way of thinking. It was a positive one, real surprising.

    Here I open another RFE for Slashdot readers:

    a) Not to come as gang to Slashdot (count comment posters about "cencoring mozillaquest" via not linking them

    b) Check some Mozillazine comments. About actual Netscape developers (Corp. Ones) speaking about mailing "The Register guy" writing about Mozilla chief wrangler left article which mozillaquest uncovered first! They said publicly, so no problem to repeat here: "I will tell that guy about Mozillaquest" and check how Mozillaquest link WAS REPLACED with Mozillazine which cencored that story for 10 days!

    People, just because of Mozilla, I can loose all my respect for opensource. Not just killing my browser, PLEASE don't kill people's faith in Open Source way of understanding free speech!

    Stop it... Please!

    It nearly "surprised" me first time I saw, but when I change "thumb buttons job" to "internet back command" it sure works perfect on Mozilla/Netscape 6.x. (mouseman+, Mouseware 9.29)

    I once asked them (on 9.20 or something, now it is 9.29) why they didn't support at least internet back command, their tech support got it wrong and talked about they couldn't find a way to make webwheel (another logitech thing) work in Mozilla... That time it surprised me since whole Mozilla source is open.

    The purpose of article isn't how Java is slow, or whether gtk-gnutella is updated or not, or windows run Java better than Linux (heard OS/2)

    The purpose why this is real big news sits right at http://www.download.com . A program which is downloaded 250.000 times a week goes opensource!

    Limewire also makes a great job for you, anti C# guys! When its downloaded, it downloads latest JAVA VM to that clueless end users machine!

    I can't believe how clueless feedbacks this big news for opensource gets!

    Err, sorry, you're living on another planet. Pretty well everybody running Linux is using either Netscape or Mozilla, increasingly Mozilla. Mozilla usage is obviously increasing rapidly.

    I guess some people are dreaming... The "usage" he mentions isn't Linux people, its the usage based on whole web audience...

    Let me give you an example... Sometimes _real_ interesting personal homepages with counters gets mentioned on Slashdot stories. As they are _totally_ personal, they have counters too. Next time when such thing happens, you will have a chance to see IE has a huge majority on Slashdot too.

    Mozilla is gaining popularity? Amongst geeks? yes (include me,since there are 10-20 builds I tried), speaking about majority of web audience? No.

    If Mozilla fans forgets to be blinded by fanaticism, it will be good for Mozilla project too..

    Let me try to be informative...

    First of all, MS in Turkey, shows mozilla as an example of failure of opensource... I know this from one to one contacts with my friends...

    Hmm this too... They did everything to make people away... Like insulting people that they are end users, they don't have a clue...

    To be straight, they made everything to make end users away from their project (or geek project I say)

    I as a turkish was insulted too much on irc.mozilla.org for instance, they asked me if there are any people in Turkey who installed mozilla... Just to bash... :-(

    But same time, my friends at Turkish goverment science division were working on turkish version of mozilla...

    Mozilla will never make it just because it isn't democratic enough to take critism...
