Its done... check http://www.esafe.com , it was free for months (years?) but after dotcom thing, they switched to 1 month try version. It checks everything constantly. Especially startup folders.
IMHO, in these evil days, if Norton,AVP,F-prot doesn't add proactive security stuff, they will be doomed.
Why we must buy faster CPU instead of them fixing bugs that causes sluggish performance especially on UI?
Well, "Go and buy a faster CPU" isn't a good reply. The good reply is, "report bugzilla where most slowness happen" (like opening new window performance Bugzilla Bug 49141 New window performance), vote for that bug at least. If you use mozilla, you must help them. Its why they are giving it to end user.
Oh, when they ship the commercial brother, Netscape 6.x, you can feedback too. More feedback they get on spesific things, more they work on it.
I am just a end user but IMHO, most "slowness" can be caused because of memory leaks, floods. Especially if it slows down after certain time of usage. I lived it. I saw my machine (win2k pro) going to HELL because of a memory leak on Norton Speeddisk (fixed now).
Oh and no, I am not replacing my P3-500 (with SSE:-) to run a program faster. If I use it, I would spare my 3-5 mins at least to vote on the problem bugs which causes slowishness...
Use crossover, put those files (I know they did it easy of course) etc. etc. to EMULATE windows.
I understand everything but I don't get the idea why Slashdot readers _hates_ Real that much, the only company RESPECTED their systems and coded a native app, great or not. Oh, BTW about Spyware thing... I decided to lose whole respect to those "customer privacy" advocates and go on my own privacy policy.
About why the Quicktime isn't on Linux, maybe Apple engineers read Slashdot too?:-)
Besides jokes, there could be many theroies. Let me say one, Apple wants people to go Mac when they are sick of Windows and OSX? Linux kinda breaks that thing... Its just a theory though.
I am amazed I see "open source quicktime" posts. Whats that? Er, what will Sorenson 3 codec (Quicktime codec as well as Holywood's choice) owner company do? Like CEO will work at Pizza Hut? It can be another theory.
Oh BTW, Quicktime Client for windows sux big time. I like the codec, I like the picture quality, I see those excellent low buffering times here... But Apple... should hire a Windows based coding company for the program.:-)
But let me say... Stay with the program respects your choice of OS. Lets all kill Realsoftware. What happens if some day "windows media version 12" ships and MS codes it so evil so no Codeweawer plugin would work?
IMHO, I would resist using Software/OS/WebSites rejects to work natively. Well, too fanatical maybe:-)
The point of all, why doesn't Apple/MS do some rocket science to make their media player workable on my/your system and I, CUSTOMER have to do it?
I am an Opera user. It comes with Sun Java virtual machine to run Java apps.
One word. Its a mess. It even makes me sad that this great coded browser gets messed up with Java.
I am in a point that, I even change my regional settings to USA to run certain embedded apps on Opera. Won't be giving names but the applets not running well aren't coded by MS or any MS junkie companies.
Java 1.3.02 from Sun is designed for XP. Its the first Java plugin to be able to run under IE!.. Now count how many years it took for Sun to make it runnable. MS conspired them? Or they didn't bother to check ActiveX docs how to make it runnable?
While I guess many Yahoo users here, check what happens on Yahoo Chat, when you decide to use "non evil" companies (Sun) Java in IE 6? It doesn't simply work.
Try Yahoo chat on Opera... What happens? Logs on, cannot run.
They didn't bother to work with Yahoo or its chat software provider to make it work with chat.
Oh, support... Lets come to that point. The only support mentioned is java- feedback@sun.com or something! Yea, they invite ALL XP/Win2k/9x users to use their own "good", "innocent" virtual machine... For support? e- mail them:-) Geezus... Can't wait it from a crappy shareware developer even.
I was in some degree of madness that I even gone and registered to IBM Developers connection to get IBM JDK (NOT JRE, development kit it is, 70 MB!), well it didn't simply work.
Another funny fact. Sun uses Installshield 4.x to install Java! Even Installshield corp says "don't use it while distrobuting new apps, its not very compatible with Windows 2000 architecture" (add XP there)... One of the reasons its not running good. Imagine an installer that if you have 10GB+ of free space, it gets confused and asks you to free space!
You can'T imagine how much I want to laugh over this lawsuit sametime I get so mad/ angry when I remember the NIGHTMARE with Sun Java. uh, oh... I still have problems.
Any "ms hating", "open source loving" developers out there. Either learn how to code for MS NT based systems, make your app friendly with them (they run ms kernel, you code in MS visual C, HELLO?) or don't release it at all.
I have read that anonymous comment too, when Kazaa was bought.
Thanks for reminding. Its just easy to understand now... And gave a lesson to me, like... You must read even "anonymous cowards" on this crappy World.:-)
1)RIAA connected firm buys Kazaa 2)Kazaa kicks morpheus from their network 3)Kazaa shuts down speaking about financial reasons??? (Well not happened -yet-)
What Morpheus did was clever. They knew all the story so, they made a quick move to gnutella.
I don't agree with everyone on that, Morpheus was speaking about moving to gnutella platform 1-2 months before even. I mean, its not a quick hack but seems they didn't wait such conspiracy would happen.
I was subscribed to a Korean shop network mail list accidentally. Someone did it I assume. One who did it knew I wouldn't get rid of it simply and subscribed me to it.
Now I get legal (non spam) mails to my Yahoo mailbox everyday. As I check, I figure its simply Korean mail advertising some t-shirts etc. Mail sent to MY e-mail, the one listed on Yahoo... I block it. Than next day I get mail from same company groups another company, of course, with another mail adress...
Guys aren't spamming me. Just they stupidly made a system easy to abuse. Like no verification like "Click YES or reply to this message" verification included.
I contacted them via Spamcop, they said they now figured I don't want those mails and they are investigating who subscribed me to that. The problem is, I believe those systems as Yahoo etc. has a system that after certain people click on "block e-mail adress" while reading mail, they a) automatically add them/their IP block to spammers list b) they investigate.
I don't think in such a closed country as China there aren'T people to abuse SMTP servers as they are owned by the goverment or companies really near goverment already.
You are right win9x kernel doesn't have that feature (Because it runs on DOS?).
That is [*] Make CPU Idle calls when idle at Linux kernel configuration and I bet all the binary kernel packages are compiled that way.
Windows NT based systems have that feature too so XP should.
BTW; I don't agree not to run a distrubuted computing project just to save $10/month and I bet its because of the system turned on all the time too, not because of CPU running on high levels.
On my last flaming on the "Microsoft.NET" logo on the agent an UD employee told me there is no consiracy on that. Of course, developers know better but Intel (or UD) coded the cancer research thing in a Fortran variant and its compiler doesn't exist on Linux/BSD.
Thanks for opening the "Cancer Research" topic. Millions of UD switched to Anthrax research somehow without their knowledge. There is absolutely a "war" going on UD message boards on that thing. (can be found at http://forum.ud.com/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=foru m&f=21 ) One of the things made people mad is, the statement of UD... "Results will be shared with friendly countries" or something like that. Nobody knows on what base "friend" comes from? Mr Bush'es friendly countries? NATO members? UN members? Who? Story can be read there: http://www.theinquirer.net/12020201.htm
Er, btw offical response from UD on those flamings is EULA. Now its an easy thing to make people mad. Use the EULA word:-)
Notice the hotmail account guys who was tricked by the MSN Messanger setup talking about "We never gave our mails, not even using it but when we checked not to get it suspended , we figured there are 100 spams!"?
A guy/gal using Hotmail gets heavily advertised to use and install MSN Messanger and some does it just to have a online mail checker for hotmail.
Now the freaky part begins... http://news.com.com/2100-1001-833154.html
Yes... With a not-so-advanced 133t jscript tactics, they can harvest your mail AND the mails of others unless they use a nickname. I don't see any reason like 90% of people would change their know Hotmail adresses to nicknames.
More interestingly CNET reporter tries to say (I congratulated him for breaking that story btw) "It is not so serious". YES it is serious!
For months I was telling my friends I am not using MSN messanger because I believe spammers/harvesters found a way to get my MSN signon name and spamming me. They called me paranoid, anti-ms but recent days they admitted "We don't know how too but there must be a way and we are getting spams"
So as a foreigner, I see they do what my super-vhs video does and get money from it?
Its real interesting... Er, anyone heard fast forward? I mean, DVD's do it in a funny way but videos can do it... In fact both can.
But don'T be confused, the problem starts when you have a digital receiver which hooks to phone line as a "need" in most conditions. They send every data they have and they don't have to ask you anything... Just embed them to data you already send (with paid movie channels etc). Only EU has those rights.

eSafe, ( http://www.esafe.com ) was my cure against IE paranoia while I had to use it.
They do sort of "proactive sandbox security" so eSafe alerts you if some sort of "scum" added to IE 's special helper apps.
Even it watches startup folders and registry continueusly.
Program is kinda problematic on some machines and *sigh* no more totally free, like 1 month of nag free trial now.
Ah, they are proud that none of their customers/users was infected with ILOVEYOU virus before it was known even.
ah found the word, its "behaviour blocking".
Than why they ship it? For fun? Don't be tricked by "free" label, those guys are making tons of money.
Else, they couldn't even afford bandwidth required for enormious downloads.
First of all I am not a cheap bastard and I guess your post is a joke.
