With all the attacks lately, it seems like the grid has been down more than it's been up. I want to know how Linden Labs were able to keep everything together *today* when they haven't been able to the last week or so. I know this assumes that there WOULD have been an attack today, but...come on...has there been a day in the last week without an attack that prompts LL to take the game down for a couple hours (Bonus points if during that time they create a fix for the attack the breaks thousands upon thousands of legitimate scripted objects in-game!)?
I've known this for pretty much ever. My undergrad physics TA discussed the Hapner-Zepowitz curve, which implies that the quanternary Chi particle has an energy that is not, in fact, zero. In fact, it is non-zero.
Really!! I knew they were phasing it out, just not NOW. Guess as a non-land-owning freeaccounter I didn't pay much attention. Man, what's the club industry going to do?
On the other hand, I cheer the end of camping chairs.
There has to be a better way to do plants than three or more intersecting rectangles overlaid with a tree-shaped texture, I just have no idea what it is. Done well they look basically alright, but with poorly-done textures they look awful, with white halos and things. Prim plants would be rediculous. Would have to be something in a distant update. Or just let people make Linden trees as objects rather than grown on land you own (thinking, for example, of the recent gardening competition I was in on land parceled out for the contest but with no ownership. Had to use transparency overlay trees).
I know what you mean about 'mechanical', but it extends to more than just plants! I think flexi-prims will help a little. The problem for me is textures. Some of them look too...'real'. Not real real, but very 'I did this very, very carefully in Illustrator.' Almost too high-res (even though it is decidedly not). Makes things stand out too much and look cartoony.
Is there anything that can't be "justified" by linking it to pedophiles and terrorists? Say it'll lower the price of gasoline and people will beg for it. Pedophiles, terrorists, and gas!
Here's the best line: "And there are couple of reasons why we do it: The uh...the DoD gives us an MWR cafe, for every 1000 troops you get something like 6 to 12 computers. And that's great, except some of the grey-list sites are kind of blocked so basically you can't get porn off it, among other things."

You say 'why it will be a must-upgrade for all Windows users' as if any Windows users are going to have much of a choice once it's out for a while. Really, how long will MS let XP kick around and be supported by upgrades, and by other sofware houses, once Vista is out?
Oh please...it's not about safety! They want you to buy new stuff to help the economy. They don't want you to buy a perfectly good Foo for x Yen from some guy. They want you to buy a brand new Foo for 5x Yen from a company who will then be paying taxes on the sale. The corperations wins, the government wins. Everybody wins. Maybe the consumer doesn't win as much, but that's not important.
Now granted, Japanese consumer culture generally favors new over old...ever see an old car in Japan? Of course not...they're hidiously expensive to get recertified. Thanks, of course, to the Stimulate The Automobile Industry Act of A Few Decades Ago.
donations in Linden Dollars will be accepted, converted to US$, and transferred to The Happening's funds.
Not a bad idea, but I hope they realize the outgoing and incomming exchange rates are different between US$ and L$. If you're thinking "Ok, I'll give them $5 worth of L$ as a donation" they're only going to get about $2.50 back out of the game. If you really want to donate, better to just send them a check. It's why I can't believe anybody makes any actual money off this game. Between the disadvantageous outgoing rate and the US$50, $100, $200+ tier fee (rent for the land) per month it's amazing anybody breaks even on real-world expenses, let alone turn a profit. Maybe they don't, and just have a bunch of really nice in-game cars! Which are a total PITA to drive, bty.
Guess it depends on why you are writing. If you're writing for the sake of journaling it doesn't matter if people read your blog or not. A 'hobby' blog like this sounds like the author decided he had something to share with the world, in which case the audience, and maintaining the attention of the audience is more important on some level. How many times can they check back with no update, before they simply stop checking back? Out of sight, out of mind.
This is always my big worry with encrypted storage. I keep a few encfs encrypted volumes around with important stuff, and I'm always worried when I update a kernel, or update the software (Granted, maybe I shouldn't do that), and will I ever get my data back out. What happens, then, if I have to move the volumes to another machine and try to access them? Will they work with THEIR kernel and encfs? What about a standalone implementation of the algorithm? Will that work one implementation to the next? In theory they should for standard algorithms, but who really knows?
How about combining elements of your List of Potential Problems? A USB drive bootable to a small linux distro with a variety of data storage/viewing/creating/manipulating/transmitting /printing/converting/encrypting/decrypting software? Could have a seperate partition that can be mounted as a drive on any (Read: A windows system. Sometimes in an emergency you have to use what you have) with copies of the data protected redundantly in multiple ways? An encfs volume, a loopback encrypted volume, straight AES/3DES/Foo, rar with parity. The weakest one lowers the overall security of your data, but maybe one of them will work to get your stuff back on an arbitrary system with unknown configuration. You'll still need your keys and passphrases, a computer, USB port, and the device needs to be functional, but it might improve the odds a bit.
It's like keeping all your eggs in one basket, but the basket is divided into a number of little baskets.
I was reading in this digital forensics book (think it was Computer Forensics : Incident Response Essentials) about a consulting gig one of the authors worked on (IIRC), that was for a Big Unnamed Online Poker Outfit.
Anyway, turns out the site's random number generator wasn't as random as it ought to be. They wrote a program to take advantage of that, and could see not only everybodies hands, but all the cards that would follow.

1989 called. It wants its dire warning back. Carmen Sandiego sounds pissed.
(Don't copy that floppy!)

Her Dwell bonus for the day is going to go through the roof! It's not even her own servers in jeopardy, it's Linden that has to hold up!
Really sweet area! I'm already there!
Did you call him Mel, because that was his name?

If this whole plane is 'wireless', what is powering the tranceivers at the 'remote' parts? Little button batteries?

This must be what it feels like to be some kind of highly-specialized form of weenie. The buzzwords, children, the buzzwords!
Also, in the interest of full disclosure, what is submitter's relationship to the website, other than having the same username as the domain name?
And you're right, it's a cut and paste of the 'article' that lasted about a minute and a half on k5.

I wouldn't call it an 'upgrade', Bob.

Anybody have the coordinates for their island? I can't find it in 'find'. Site says it should be up this week for exploration. Thanks!

No, and if you are using Tor for P2P, terrible things should happen to you and ideally also your pets.
No.
And it's a right bit of cheek calling your keyboard the 'New Standard Keyboard'.

What if you really don't like the new layout of The Onion? Is that where Slashdot is headed?

Just means they are using multiple fiber optic cables.
Think 'Surgeons General'.

Oh, sure you can!
Point of order: If one runs a Freenet node, one has no way of knowing what is being stored at any given time. That's half of the point.
