Well, it looks bad when you use words like "researchers" and "Side effects". But the fact of the matter is that just about everything will either kill or harm you if you take a high enough dose of it.
Coffe(my source of caffine) is no worse than salt, steak, snickers, mcdonald's burgers and so on. It is all about eating and drinking sensible - coffe is no exception.
Maybe I am getting old, but who needs movies while on-the-move? Watching a movie takes up pretty much take all of you attention, so you can't really do the same things with the Portable Media Center as you do with an ipod(or similar device).
I use my 'pod mostly when I am out of the house, doing boring everyday stuff like shopping, riding my bike to work and working out. I can't really do any of those things watching a movie - not without looking like an idiot and running a great risk of getting injured, anyways;)
Now add to that, that the Portable Media Center is both bloody expensive and ugly as well as bulky and we have a pretty useless device. In time, perhaps, they will get it right, but right now the things looks to me as a useless gadget.
I find it highly unlikely that Linux will ever become warez. Should SCO claims carry any merrit, the code in question would be removed instantly - which is exactly what SCO doesn't want. They want to be able to milk every linux user from now until hell freezes over.
It isn't going to happen of course. Linux is nothing without it's community, and who would contribute anything to SCO?
Sorry, a UN managed internet would simply give certain 3rd world countries (and some European) a new means to bash or otherwise attempt to restrict prospering Western countries. It would advance anti-Jewish attitudes, probably going as far as to restrict Israel! China would be given free reign to threaten Tiawan and run ramshackle over tibet. Can you imagine what these nations would want to classify as SPAM?
This is insightful? I know a lot of people don't like the UN or Europe for that matter. But this is getting ridiculous.
"Sometimes, though, cell phones are absolutely necessary - my wife is pregnant, right? What happens if I'm at a movie [...]"
That's OK. You just refund the money for the ticket + the time wasted and we are fine... After all, that is a small price to pay to attend the birth of your child.
Or you could choose not to go see the movie in the first place
Well, yes. But while it may make sense, to view elements as components in a organic system. It does not make the elements organic. Humans are humans, and computerprograms are computerprograms.
More general, while insight undoubtly can be gained from applying biological models to non-biological phenomena, in does not change the the properties of the elements in the model. Understanding an object does not change it, but it can bring change in how the object is perceived.
As you can see, I am afraid my perspective remains more or less the same:)
hmm... I guess we are not going to agree:) I think the crux of the matter is definition. You define the problem as:
"a self-replicating organic pest that uses human weakness to infest a technical infrastructure. So long as there are people, there will be viruses."
Whereas I would describe it as
"a self-replicating program written by a malicious programmer to infest a technical infrastructure. So long as there are people/computers, there will be (computer)viruses."
I do this because I do not see virus(and other malicious programs) as organic. Mostly because of the biological characteristics it does not display. Ability to adapt, ability to evolve and so forth. If/when we begin to develop sentient programs, your defintion will probably look better. But my guess is, that if we really do manage to develop true machine intelligence, we will have other and more pressing problems to attend to.
Anyways, it was nice reading a different perspective...
But it is not an ecology you are describing, it is human behavior. Which most certainly can be regulated - indeed the fact, that human nature can be regulated is the basis of cilivilization.
The fact of the matter is, that "parasitical code" or rather destructive code, is no more than an extension of the aspect of human nature that is destructive.
If the internet truely were a natural system, virus and the like would never cease to exist - billions of years of evoultion must have taught us that much.
I am not sure I agree. "parasitical code" as you call it, is not a natural phenomena on a network. Set up a million computers and tie them together, and no virus will spontaneously be created, nor adapt to countermeasures. If you want to put "parasitical code" on said network, you need a creator. A person willing to commit a crime, for his own gain/amusement/whatever motivates the fucker. So it basically a social problem. If we passed a law stating that writing a virus, would be punishable by death to you, your family and possibly your pets, the problem would be drastically reduced - the problem is, that most civilized countries don't really enjoy killing their own citizens.
"Of course, I'd like him to, just to crush SCO. But I'm not even sure that Linus has that kind of cash. Last I heard, Linux had given him lots of opportunities and a steady paycheck, but no millionaire-level fortune."
Should it come to that, I don't think that money would be an issue. I mean, who wouldn't donate to see Darl and his SCOundrels crushed?
I always find it fascinating, when the universe demonstrates just how small and insignificant we really are... that, and watching aurora is a great way of getting kids interested in astronomy.
It is today actually. The holidays are not counted in the 30 days, so it is more "30 workdays to produce evidence".

Dear Rebel Alliance
Why don't you like me anymore?
Love

Seems fair... It was the only redeeming quality in the movie.
So it is official now. The current administration is run by eight year olds...
amen brother. That particular complaint were solved *long* ago, it getting the same rpm-whining over and over again, does get tiresome.
Finally I can find that elusive gene for intimate knowlegde of d&d ver 3.5...
Now all I need is the gene for big breasts, blond hair and low standards, and I might end up with the perfect wife after all.
"human rights of people who don't enjoy the freedoms you do"
That would sound a lot better if the US didn't lock up foreign citizens(including children) for years without being charged or tried.
yes, I am talking about Guantanmo.
farking funny... Only it doesn't say that anywhere... shitty ac
It was a simple typo, the agreement is a "20 cent contingency" not "20-per-cent contingency".
or, at least that what I heard:)
You can download the helix player. It is quite stable, and wonderfully free of crap.
I have. And criticism of israel is not anti-semitism.
I asked for proof, any proof, of the the U.N. being anti-semitic, and neither you or the parent have shown any.
And now, you ask me to prove your point!. Well, someone isn't interrested in "intelligent discussion" on that we can agree.
EOD
No, so this is were you give me proof that the UN is anti-semitic.

I don't think your eye is very secure either... It could easily be scooped out with a spoon:(
