Why don't they just put into the license, plain and clear, a phrase like " The company Microsoft (or whatever it is in legalize) can not use or interact with software that is covered under this license unless it is by its customers using their OS.." etc. If everyone knows they wrote some parts of it to go against the actions of one company, why try and do it so vaguely. After reading the GPLv3 it is very clear some parts of it are politically motivated. I don't even agree with it on some points, but it's not my license, so they should just put in it what they want just like they already have. Right now everything I do I issue no copyright on and am happy if someone else wishes to use anything I may have thought up.
I installed my legal copy of windows XP Pro SP1 so many times, because of problems and a lot of testing out experimental software I actually got redirected to a webpage last time I authorized my windows copy telling me that I had RUN OUT OF INSTALLS left on my license! I had to get another LEGAL copy from the MSDNAA network through my school! If they are counting just authorized copies or installs then I have over 20-30 myself and thats from only 2 CDs!!! And I was thinking about re-install soon just so I can condense all my hard drives to larger ones and to fix a couple more problems and make room for a few more linux installs hah....
When movies get an X or NC-17 rating that doesn't prevent them from being sold in adult stores or in back-rooms of rental places. Why not just allow a game to get an 'AO' rating, then put them in adult retail stores or etc. and let the rating do what it is supposed to and allow the sale of the game to the proper audience just like porn... I don't mind being carded for buying an 'R' rated movie or even an 'X', so I wouldn't mind being carded to buy an 'AO' game, because I'm an adult and like to buy what I choose. And what's gonna happen to my Manhunt 2 pre-order sigh... It's easier for kids to obtain cigarettes and alcohol and porn than it is for them to get video game's that are less violent than some PG-13 movies, not to mention look a whole lot worse, because they are completely digital and done in real-time, and any blood or gore is super fake, movies at least get time to pre-render everything so those nasty scenes from movies like SAW actually look real. If they made a SAW video game and put in half the twistedness it would get an AO rating, but... you get the point.
If it's running Linux then you can probably get the same apps it's running and install them on your Linux machine. And if your already running Linux you probably don't need a firewall for windows anyway...
This is why I enjoy being a Math Tutor. I don't have to deal with all the bureaucratic crap. When a student enters into my teaching domain, they get a good lesson, that I create on the spot, that no administrator or city leader, who hasn't been to school in 30 plus years, can see or do anything about. Whenever my students ask when they will use anything "in real life" that I'm teaching them, I can easily give them real world examples without worrying about being PC or getting fired. I even enjoy reminding my students that if they keep complaining that "the work is stupid or pointless," that they will soon be working in a nice fast food joint where math is being replaced by pictures on the cash registers.
Teachers are not teachers anymore, they are babysitters. And it's true with the way the grading system is working in some places. Students can't even fail anymore. Just today one of my students looked at me in disbelief after I told him "They should of failed you last grade if you kept missing this type of algebraic question." If we keep passing kids regardless of the amount of knowledge we have then we are slowly killing off our society. Survival of the fittest does not apply to the human race and we are ultimately dooming ourselves to a stupider future.
When my Gamecube's video card malfunctioned, Nintendo paid for the shipping of my Gamecube to them and shipped me a new Gamecube back, for free, after declaring the old one to be unfixable. The entire process took only about 4 days. Nintendo Customer Support is top notch. Who cares if they save on shipping if you're not paying for it, and they send you a brand new console free of charge.
I normally have only one program open per desktop. I find that the easiest way to use any program with the most efficiency. One desktop for firefox (2 tabs is enough), One desktop for a music player, one for gaim so I can talk to other humans. One desktop for a terminal so I can talk to my computer. Then one more for a file manager so I can talk to my files. A quick button press or mouse wheel changes between them and everything gets a full screen.
Beta releases are normally for people who enjoy software that's new but are O.K with some bugs so they can help improve the program, but therein lies the problem, only users who want to use betas actually do. By releasing a final version and getting over 2 million downloads, that's just that many more people finding bugs and with Firefoxe's error reporting software that's that many more fixed bugs later on. The whole point of open source software is so that it can be fixed by the community and if we leave it up to the handful of developers those bugs we are seeing now will always be there.
I upgraded from Socket A to Socket AM2 this summer with 4x4 in mind, but now they say it's only being supported on socket 1207. I bought a nice 150$ 3800X2 planning on saving up and getting another one with this new 4x4 I have been hearing about for a while. They keep saying things are future proof, yet they go and change the socket type and then make it so you can only buy the top-end cpus for it to work. Where is the AMD of socket 939 when they had everything from the low-end to the high end totally covered. 4x4 just looks like they are taking their server/workstation tactics and trying to apply it to gamers.
This is a flame bit but not for the normal reasons. The plaintiff doesn't like people saying bad things about her well lets see her try to sue me.
Dear Ms. Scheff,
You are an asshole that no one likes or cares about personally. You have made the stupidest choice in your entire life and our about as liked by me as I like someone raping me in the ass like you have to free speech. The Internet is for saying whatever I choose to say as long as I am right. The constitution protects the rights of people in America and if I speak out against someone on the Internet its as if I was talking aloud.
Just to re-iterate I hate you with all my heart and hope the swiftest of deaths upon you and filth that destroy our rights!!!
And she dare sued a victim of katrina what a bitch. I'm about a 30 minute drive from weston FL and I'd love to give her a visit and use my right of free speech to tell this bitch just that.
P.S. my validation word for slashdot is atrocity, even the servers know shes a bitch. Come and sue me! P.S.S you are a crook fraud and anything else the woman said you were because you just proved it in court congrats. a fraud takes someones money wrongly and you have done so so this is fact and you can't sue me.
Please e-mail this lady all your opinions she deserves it.
There's little reason for anyone to still be running SP1; SP2 contained a range of improvements to XP's security.
Windows Update can't complete the install of updates required to install/download sp2...
But all is ok, I found this site http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html which will allow me to download all 50+ updates manually. But it really dosen't matter now that I use Gentoo.
WinXP Pro with bad sound and video card drivers. 150$ Gentoo with great working ALSA and working video card drivers. 0$ Knowing that you can't play Oblivion any more. Priceless
I myself own over 50 classic NES titles and about 20 SNES and N64 titles and a couple Gamecube games as well as some Sega Genisis games. Shouldn't there be at least a discount for those of us who already purchased these games at retail prices years ago? I know of at least 20 games for the NES I want to play again without having to fix my NES, but at around 100$ to do so it would be cheaper to re-build my old consoles. I'm more than happy paying for the bandwidth as some of those n64 games are huge, but another 5-10$ for a 30-50$ game?? just to play it again on the same TV? I love the idea and will most likely pay for everything again just feels so wrong. On another note it is legal for me to play my legally bought games on an emulator for free on my TV with upsampling and better graphics.
Ashida: Umm, from the point of view of the designer, I would like to say that I hope you use Wii in its upright position, with the stand! This article makes me want to buy a Wii even more now after reading about everyones hardwork.
Will consoles have native support for VGA or DVI outputs so we can all use our nice computer monitors that support well pass 1080p/60? Is there a reason that TVs and consoles go together better? Isn't a TV just a specialized monitor? with possibly different inputs? and maybe a tuner?

To get my first computer going I would have to first unlock the door and find the power "wires" and touch one of them to the PSU. Then i'd have to manually spin the main 120mm with my finger to get it spinning. (I just wish I didn't do it at night, that was one bad cut) Then I'd put on the headphones to try and save my hearing from the 60db beast so I could use it. Then I'd have to jiggle the RAM while the computer was on to get windows to detect the second stick, after that the wire for the fan would fall out and id have to try and push it back into the molex connector. By that time I'm sure I had done something to windows and would need to reformat. Ahh I miss that old thing.
While playing Fable your sent out to do quest by these doors called demon doors and they were quest that were more than just go kill X or find me z, some of them made you think or do something very unusual. One required you to eat a bunch until you were fat. One quest required you to umm well get friendly with at least 10 ladies. I think that fable has had some of the best quest of any rpg so far because the quest were very funny and unique.
There really aren't to many types of stories out there, so even if the plot may have the same general themes, it's how well that theme is played out and the adventure of getting to the point where you destroy whatever the evil at the end is. The same generic label can be applied to an fps where all you do is shoot people, but the thing that makes half life better than unreal tournament is the plot. So that's why i agree with the above parent and that's why I will get the game, to the second parent thread.

I've Always hated running up to a locked door in a game and it means, oh no you can't go this way please follow the linear game play. Even in games like gta that are supposed to be open ended, you can not simply open a wooden door because it was locked. I think opening doors this way should be included into every new game. It opens a whole new level of game play and options. Like shooting down a big metaphorical door with a shotgun.

It's a good thing that developers keep developing for older hardware and game consoles as it allows for optimizations that can be passed onto newer hardware for visuals that could not of been achieved before. If software developers were to keep relying on the hardware to improve to get better visuals, then people would have to spend 1000s each year just to see a game that looks moderately better. While playing SOTC I was amazed at the way they did the lighting and how the landscape was so vast and looks so real. It is a real treat to read how they actually achieved such awesome graphics.

People never think of the effects of what they do before they do it. If the stockholders sue the company that pays them money then they loose that money that they sue for. Then when Take Two goes out of business because of all these stupid lawsuits the stockholders loose more money from all the big games there releasing like Oblivion and the next blockbuster gta game that everyone knows will make them even more money because everyone loves gta.
As stated by my favorite comedian Carlos Mancia, the reason some Muslims get violent over things is because they don't have enough humor in there society. When i see a cartoon making fun of fat people i don't get offended because I am fat, I laugh. If i see a cartoon trying to display a political message or a satire of something I try and figure out what it means. Getting offended by something just shows that one has not taken the time to see what the message is behind it and responding to it in a reasonable manner, like laughing at it.
