The only solution to worms and viruses is to require a minimum IQ inorder to be able to use the internet. If we can get the stupid people that actually open spam and fall for phishing scemes they will no longer work and the rest of the world will no longer be made to suffer.
It is a great way to get more people interested into becoming an astronaut
I don't think the problem stems from a lack of interest, rather it is a problem of possibilities. Ask any child in elementary school if they would like to be an astronaut. I am certain that 99% would say yes. Ask any college student if they would like to be an astronaut and 99% would say yes. Ask those same college students if they are willing do sell their souls first to the Airforce and then play the gambling game of never getting picked and less then 1% would say yes.
The problem is not that people are not interested, the problem is it too hard to get involved with the space program, only the best of the best of the military get to be astronauts. Another problem is that people do not see how space directly benifits their lives, nor is there a way for people to make it a part of their lives. Sure space camps would be great but all space camp would be in the end is an overprice camp for the rich and famous. I have already listed a few problems but there is a greater problem. That problem is government control.
Space NEEDS to be privatised. The average citezen should have a shot at space not just the military elite.
Funnily enough, the specifications for the laptop say that it can get very hot and to avoid burns and irritation the MacBook and MacBook Pro should be used on a desk or another surface. But if you primarily use it on a desk does that make it a desktop?
You're right his project may fail in the sense that his laptops never get used on the wide scale that he is planning. But I disagree that the project is going to be a failure. The wide spread media he has recieved has publicly seeded the idea of computers in 3rd world countries. If his implementation fails it is only a matter of time before someone else comes in and completes it. With the open source community growing every day there is certainly the required software, and with hardware prices falling every day the hardware will not be an issue.
So if he fails it will be a failure on the political or buisness side of things, and an idea that stands to benefit so much of the world someone will eventually pick up the bricks and finish the project. So in that sense the project cannot and will not fail.
That it why email, along with everyother conversation form known to man, are frequently misunderstood. I mean how many times have you said something and someone took offense because they thought you meant it some other way. ALL COMMUNICATION IS MIS UNDERSTOOD! Infact you are probably mis-understanding this very post!
Wires running through water. Electricity runs through wires. Wires get hot. Wires heat water. Water turns to steam. This is definately vapor ware.;-)
My history with VIM
on
Vim 7 Released
·
· Score: 4, Interesting
I was a TA for a basic CS class for over a year. Upon first exposure the VIM (the editor that our system admins installed) many students got really frustrated. Most of them didn't understand how as they scrolled up on down with the mouse that random pieces of text got inserted all over their programs causing a tons of errors.
I too was pretty annoyed with VIM at first as that it is set up in such a way that it expects you to be a power user. I haven't downloaded the latest version but will do so shortly. But I would like to see a version of VIM that the everyday joe shmoe could use. Less clunky font, easier to set preferencess, and a way to turn of all those linux short cuts that we non-linux people are plagued with.
I think there is a definate need for a more userfriendly version of VIM
I would speculate that more people download Windows updates then almost any other piece of software (mostly because they are unaware mostly because this feature comes standard and enabled in Win XP). So why would microsoft want to divulge the security holes it is patching so openly? If I was looking to break into someone elses system the first place I would go is to microsoft.com check to see what security holes it has just patched and then see if my neighboor has patched yet.
It would be way to easy for people to learn about the problems that microsoft has riddled the world with.
What would we lose if we regionalized the internet? What would we lose? We would lose the internet. The internet is more the one country. The internet is more the the websites that make it up. The internet is the idea of free un-restricted access to the world, un-restrictred access to other peoples and their ideas. The truth is that most people don't read websites from other countries nor do they communicate with people who speak other langauges, there are however people who do. The internet is not about region is about connecting people from different regions of the world. The more people that take part the more connections that exist. The more connections that exist the more the internet grows. I will firmly say that any act that will regionalize or compartmentalize the internet will only destroy the things about the internet that have made it so amazing and powerful in the lives of the citezens of this world. How great is it to be able to read a blog or a news site from indonesia or australia? How great is it to exchange political and philosophical ideas with people who have never been within 1000 miles of the United States? I can't imagine anything that could be more detrimental to the real identity of what the internet is.
Every facet and site on the internet should be free and open to all. WITHOUT EXCEPTION. Stop the coporate take over release the internet from the bondage of men trying to make money. Allow the people of the world to unite freely without borders or regions. Allow us to have the internet in its purest and true form.
Just go buy a TiVo or get a DVR free with direct TV. Most of us are already paying for satalite or cable service so the Direct TV costs are not going to change your monthly expenses. Also with the real commercial thing it is a simple set up process that any computer illiterate person can set up. There is no complicated (or expensive) software to install and set up and has a sweet remote to go with it, and it doesn't run on windows!!!. Yes it is from corperate america and no it doesn't run on open source but you can by 10 for the price it takes to build your own.
The only reason that the optic nerve is considered part of your brain is because it grows out from your brain during development. There are in totaly 10 cranial nerves but the Optic nerve is the only nerve that is actually part of your brain. The others are considered the peripheral nervous system (including the auditory nerve).
"The findings gave neuroscientists enormous insight into the inner workings of the brain"
Funny this is the exact way that the functions of the brain where mapped out. When cancer patients went in for surgery local anesthetic was given (the brain has no pain receptors, only the skin, skull, and the membranes around the brain). The doctors after surgery would stimulate different areas of the brain with extremely low voltages and observe the response in the patient. Sometimes the patient would smell a rose, other times muscles would twitch, and sometimes the patient would fall asleep. There is a study from the 50's that linked aggression to a certain region in the brain. When a cat had its lateral hypothalamus stimulated it became ferocious and would attack anything in sight. On the other hand when the Ventral Hypothalamus was stimulated the cat would recoil in fear when it saw even a baby mouse.
Now it is true that we are learning more and more about the brain and its region specific functions everyday. But take it from me this is more of a publicity stunt then someone trying to do real science.
Actually there by definition there is only one nerve in the brain the optic nerve. The optic nerve is a Sensory Nerve because it carries sense information from the eyes to the brain for processing.
What normally would be called a nerve in the brain is called a Tract. So really (optic nerve aside) there are no nerves in the brain.
Now instead of having a laser pointer showing up during your favorite movie, teenage kids are going to be able to project the latest 'pic' they took with their cell phone! Movies are ruined forever!
Sorry boys,
But I have been studying Neuroscience for the last 3 years. Every lecture we have had on sleep, particullary REM, has taught that when you are sleeping your neurons will all re-fire in an organized manner. This is when your memories are "consolidated" from semi-long term to long term memories. This is why if you have had a particularly stressful day you can "re-live" that day in your dreams. However it has long been shown that "place cells" or neurons that store spatial location will fire in the direct same sequence in which they fired when the test subject was presented with a spatial puzzle. You can read about this in the book Neuroscience by Kandal.
I am currently studying Neuroscience and we spent a great deal of time examining the neurons that are used for light perception in the eye. Because of the circuts of neurons in your retina the peripheral vision is actually more sensative to movement and light variations then your central vision. The center of you eye is used for picking up fine detail in slow moving objects and color. This is why a star appears brighter when you see it from the corner of your eye. This is also why moving objects get picked up by your eye easier in your peripheral vision.
The only solution to worms and viruses is to require a minimum IQ inorder to be able to use the internet. If we can get the stupid people that actually open spam and fall for phishing scemes they will no longer work and the rest of the world will no longer be made to suffer.
I say ban the stupid people!
Finally equipment good enought to catch the UFO's in action!!!

Negroponte's project will fail for many reasons
You're right his project may fail in the sense that his laptops never get used on the wide scale that he is planning. But I disagree that the project is going to be a failure. I really don't think so because new macs ship with a trial version of MS Office (atleast the educationally priced mac i purchased did)
The article forgot to mention that google want to index these conversations as part of their quest to make all information searchable.
At least apple has raised their sights on who they want to drag into a legal battle.

With all the hot air that congress puts out why don't we just collect the hydrogen out of the capitol building?
Come on, all university publications are completely ligit... especially that cold fusion one too.

Wow! Now thanks to science you can buy a three legged epileptic color-blind mouse, but you still can't get Apple to make a two button mouse.

Sorry I made a mistake, The book title is "Principles of Neural Science" by Kandal, I have too many textbooks sitting around....
