Human Occupied Landfill is definately a more interesting read - but I always found myself more interested in actually playing Paranoia. That game rules.
I didn't actually compare the movies at all. You are welcome to choose your poison. This isn't about the content - it's about the business model.
Peter Jackson and New Line, regardless of the movie's content, are treating those who choose to purchase the films with respect. George Lucas is not.
Since you brought up the content and the genre defining aspects of films, I have to make a side comment:
Star Wars may have come out in 1977, but we aren't talking about/that/ star wars. We are talking about the one that came out in the 90's. You can't buy the '77 one anymore even if you wanted to. So I guess the star wars that defined the genre is dead. Now all we can see is the one that fell victim to the cliches of the genre it helped spawn.
1) In LOTR, they told everyone up front was the plan was so the informed consumer could choose... instead of feeling ripped off.
2) In LOTR, they made sure that there was no overlap in the special features between the theatrical cut and the extended cut.
3) In LOTR, the extra features on the extended cut, plus 45 minutes of NEW footage justify the second purchase - instead of only offering a version that was modified (for the worse) for sale initially, and then relenting and offering the original at a later date.
In other words, with LOTR the extended cuts are actually GOOD, and are put out there for fans, while leaving the original theatrical cut available for everyone. In the Star Wars case, no one can get the original version they know and love, and are stuck with the extended/special versions, DESPITE the fans.
Peter Jackson and New Line are treating fans like people worth of respect, and offering them as much of the LOTR magic as they can soak up. George Lucas is treating Star Wars fans the way a school bully treats kids in cartoons - turning them upside down and shaking money out of their pockets, all the while trying to dampen whatever Star Wars magic is left with a thick blanket of corporate greed.
I know. But after running through the hour+ long setup download, i told it to make the daily call. Two hours later, it was still on the line. At this point it was 11pm, So rather than sleep over, i decided to leave it there. Call me crazy if you must.;)
I have a tivo and am cellular only. I took it to a friend's house, left it overnight to update, and brought it home. I have hooked up a usb->ethernet adapter, and run it through a router to my broadband connection. The latest tivo software (downloaded while it was hooked up overnight at my friends) supports usb ethernet natively.
It works perfectly, with the only hassle being that initial setup.
Do the rules exclude building a key turning engine too? I could see it becoming the kind of thing where you set it up, each player hits their button, and then walks away.
I wonder if there is any strategy to the turning as far as easing off and coming back, etc... or if it's just twist as hard as you can.
Umm... doesn't the article say you are stuck in your cursed apartment in 4? That would probably make it hard to explore. Then again, maybe they will cheat and let you escape.... or not. I wonder how they would make it shocking or scary if they had to keep you locked in... maybe you find secret doors or something.
I played the recent ps2 2.5D Contra - they went back to the 2d formula, but used a 3d engine to draw it... and it RULES. It's really really difficult, but a ton of fun. Hopefully the new one will be more of the same.
I guess I will find out when I go home and get away from works draconian web filter - it's like they think I goof off on the web when I should be working or something... jeez.
I had this problem sometimes. The first time I overslept for work, I felt like a tool and worked out a solution.
Set an alarm clock next to your bed. Any ordinary one will do. Use the buzzer setting, and set it for 15 minutes earlier than you need.
Set ANOTHER clock on the far side of your room, with the volume max and the buzzer setting, and set it for 5 minutes earlier than you need.
I sleep through the first, but it makes my brain flinch. The second wakes me up from my already semi-woken state. YMMV.
Also, from a sleep schedule point of view - stop going to bed when you get sleepy. Figure out your morning wake up time, and go to bed 9-10 hours earlier than that at the latest... whether you feel sleepy or not. Eventually you will get used to the schedule, and things will get better. It's about practice.;)
"OMG ITS PETER JACKSON. HE MADE MY CHILDHOOD DREAMS COME TRUE! AIIIEEEEE!"
Isn't that enough?
Sure, the movie isn't typical oscar fare (read: pretentious) and instead focuses on telling one of the greatest stories of our time as well as it can - and it succeeds beyond almost everyone's expectations. That seems like it's oscar worthy to me.
BeOS had audio routing via the media kit years and years ago. The best interface to it was a program called Cortex, which would show every audio recieving and producing item on the system, and let you connect them how you like. You could also mix in VST plugins for effects and such.
jack is cool, but it is absolutely not new, unique, or innovative in its goals. it's implementation may or may not be another story.
I wasn't talking about the securemac article. I was talking about how filevault nuked my entire keychain quite securely. Part joke, Part discussion on the merits of the 10.3.1 update. If I had forseen the confusion with the SecureMac article, I would have elaborated a bit more.
From my limited experience with FileVault, it securely deletes files... The problem is that it does it to files you need, when you don't ask it to. Or at least it did to me, when it nuked my entire keychain and nearly required a reinstall to repair. I have since turned it off.
It is said that this update fixes bugs with Filevault, and I have installed it, but i am still/very/ hesitant to reenable filevault.
Besides, It would be better to enable it by folder (any folder) instead of simply the home dir. I would love to just encrypt my documents dir and leave my music available. That would make more sense, and probably speed things up as well.
I have these spots on my powerbook's display. Started out as three small points and are now rather large spots. They are only extremely noticable when displaying white backgrounds and such, but are there always.
Thankfully, I also have extended apple care. I am gonna wait until I hear that they are 100% fixed before I send it in. I don't want to be waiting 2-3 weeks for a replacement, etc. That would be a real big problem. Hopefully they will get the delays down and the success ratio up, and then I can get a new screen that is pristine.:)
This adds a whole new level to the Monty Python Knights who say NI! sketch. I am not entirely sure what that level is, but I am sure that it's there somewhere.
"There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again." [video available here]
actually, no.. i've never heard of that. I also didnt realize that rotten was contagious. that makes sense in hindsight. Thanks for the knowledge. Now I will go off and feel dumb.
"It only takes on[sic] rotten apple to ruin a whole basket."
That doesn't make sense. If someone gave me a basket of apples and one was rotten, that doesn't mean the rest of them aren't perfectly tasty delicious apples. Just rinse them off. I mean, "rotten" isn't contagious is it?
Who codes the obscure kernel drivers? Who codes memory management routines? who painstakingly codes the network stack? Who codes the print queue?
There are lots of tasks that have to be done to build a complete operating system - many people view many of them as shit jobs and don't want to think about them. They aren't as cool as vector rendered windows, instant messenger apps, etc. But happily there is someone out there who doesn't look at them that way and enjoys coding them...
note: i don't think all the examples I gave are shit jobs - I just tried to list various areas that may be intimidating or boring to some and stimulating to others. Hell, i think obscure kernel coding is as cool as it gets, and have now succesfully talked myself into thinking my metaphor/example was shite. crap.
It isnt much for/how/ it works or how it's implemented or how you code it, etc. But it sure makes for a nice description of what it is... enough to make me salivate anyway. My apologies if I was overly harsh previously.
Hey wow.. that link is to a page i've already read which basically says "Hey, there's something New called NSController but it's NDAd so theres no documentation. Can anyone share?" There is also some info at the new cocoabb that has the same basic "NDAd sorry" info. In fact, cocoabb got me to google for it, hence me having already read that page.
Thanks for the attempted (and failed) mockery. Next time try reading your links before you stake your credibility on them.
Anyone out there have a link to some real, fleshed out information?
Apparently there are new classes in Panther called NSController that are funky and cool coding goodness... but they are all NDAd or something, so I can't find any info on them yet. Wonder when they will post that documentation. Hmm.

I always forget about Creep... which is a shame, cause thats a great song.
