You missed the real "killer app" on the iPhone; the micro-payment application delivery system. Er yeah it runs on iTunes which kinda blows, but you can use it directly from your phone without iTunes so personally I never notice that problem.
I discovered the true power of this a while back in the following way: - While stuck on the M4 motorway heading home to London (England) I was wondering why *this time* I had to wait 2 hours to drive 5 miles, so I went onto the App store, downloaded and paid £3 for a traffic info application, which then showed me the live CCTV pictures of the motorway in front of me!
Could I do anything with that information? Well no, it's London traffic so of course not, but did it make me feel informed to be able to see miles ahead of me on the road while waiting patiently? YES.
This is just one example of a simple but very helpful application that takes advantage of all those location aware features that this platform provides.
Can you do this with a Nokia / LG / Sony? Yes, minus the search / purchase / install bit (oh and perhaps minus the *insert useful app bit*). Could it be done with just a web browser, yes probably if you can stand browsing standard web pages on a 3 inch screen, and assuming said pages dont need flash, java, etc..

Now have just completed moving all my personal domains to Google Apps.
I had never even had a gmail account before (always using IMAP / SquirrelMail via h2hosting.com most recently), but after testing out the Google Apps Gmail I was instantly sold.
Highlights: - The BEST IMAP implementation I have seen in 8 years! Beats imapd, cyrus, Exchange IMAP anyday! - 6 GB free, but I'm just about to upgrade to 25GB for peanuts. - The gmail interface is slick! So much so that I have now actually given up on using an IMAP client 90% of the time!
Martin.
PS. I don't work for Google - I actually work for one of their competitors!
I wouldn't read into the article title so negatively "uncommon" when talking about stars is a pretty big number.
Also if you read the linked PDF with the paper, the graph shows what kind of numbers they are talking about, about 6 out of 100 simulations resulted in solar system like configurations.
On the up side for your second point, Office 2007 is helping out the competition here! The required training for typical users moving to 2007 has proven to be extremely high, unlike almost all previous Office versions.
Yes, Thank you Apple! Finnally someone has done what the consumers have been screaming for for years! So many nay-sayers look at the iPod Video and say it is some gimmick, but what they dont realise is exactly this pandoras box being opened!
The day when I can download my latest episodes of SG1 or my girlfriends O.C for $1.99 rather than wait 6-9months for it to come on TV in the UK is the day that I stop using eMule!
Thank you Apple you found the only way to stop priacy.
I really can't understand the general naivety in many of these posts here, I really thought in this crowd there would be a higher level of understanding of such complex issues. Sorry I also don't mean to troll..
Haven't you ever watched Discovery channel? National Geographic? If you watch *any* show on the climate or weather systems or natural disasters and the one message they tell above all is the interaction of weather systems anywhere has major effects everywhere! When the temperature rises in the arctic it effects the weather everywhere!
If for example you live in Central Australia and you think that the slight rise in temperature and the increased rainfall you will see is a good thing, then spare a moment for the hundreds of millions in Europe who might see far less rainfall. The same for you Texans who might enjoy in improved conditions at the expense of their northern neighbours!
Whatever happens, the answer to your question is that you will definately notice, but fortunately for you and me, we can easily adapt. Just spare a thought for the other 5 billion humans out there.
I always found the "Singularity" concept facinating, see: http://www.singinst.org/ for some info. But basically it states that we will soon reach a point in advancement, be it through AI or genetic engineering or whatever, that good old natural "humans" will become not just inferior but obsolete.
The problem with that for you 'human' loving beings? Well simply that some things don't change so easily, given half a reason (say land / air / water / energy shortages) what reason would these new superhumans have to NOT walk all over those primitive humans. How much consideration do you give to the feelings of an ant?
The "collateral damage" of black lists is far worse than positive effect it ever has, I have recently come to the conclusion that black listing is in general worse than spam itself! Blacklisting single hosts for open relay is fine, actually I support and use host only black lists. But in my opinion these kinds of blanket black lists are dispicable!
Just a quick look at the kind of things that are black listed should make anyone cringe, I'm not talking about the topic at hand, heck small countries have no hope of surviving if big counrties like Australia, or the UK have significant portions of their Internet blatently blacklisted!
For example, their respective largest ISP's Telstra and BT are both blacklisted! apparently they are "only" dynamic ip black lists, of course what many "intelligent" people in charge of these black lists dont realise is that these ISP's allocate their STATIC IP's DYNAMICALLY. So who cares? Well 45% (figure made up based on Telstra's market capitalisation) of Australian small businesses or some equally significant number of Brittish small companies have endless problems that they cannot afford to deal with!
It is a daily issue for myself as an engineer for a large outsourcer in London, I used to be able to say email is a reliable system, your message is generally either delivered or you get a NDR. Today you just dont know..
There is no double standard, the point is quite simple, Open Source doesn't follow the same "rules" that was what the original poster was leading to. Ahh yes WindowsMessanger has become one of my pet-hates! Unfortunatly now that I have moved overseas I have to go back to using an IM (I used ICQ years ago but realised it is the devil incarnate) so since too many of my friends use Messanger I chose it, also since this is not my computer, and it was already here.
What I hate, is I have NO CONTROL over it! I hate Messanger (or ICQ or whatever) telling the world whenever I am online, I rather it off at all times except for the 30 odd minutes of every week I go on to see who's around. But no Messanger fights to be online always, ever since I was stupid enough to click that 'remember password' box now whenever outlook is open it will be there! Even when set to 'not login messanger' in outlook, if say my modem re-connects i will find messanger online waiting before I know it! Argh?!$!"!%^$
I used to have a great simple solution to fix Messanger, just delete the msmsgs.exe program and suprisingly nothing complains! Outlook works fine and you never have to see it popup again! (With no regsrv or regedit needed!)
That's a good idea in theory but doesnt help with RealOne. I always use MediaPlayerClassic but just having RealOne installed means you get frequent 'friendly reminders' from Real MessageCenter.
That's why I agree RealOne IS SPYWARE, and I too avoid real media files at all costs now!
PS. I believe the Message Center "feature" is forced on you even in the non-free version.:( Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
The whole concept here is a joke! US citizen jailed for aiding Taliban, whats next:
Haliburton execs jailed for secret talks with the Taliban. Yeah RIGHT!
Hipocracy at it's best, but who cares right, just another anti-American behind bars hey? Another day I thank god I am not as 'free' as all you Americans...
At the beginning of the 90's many new theories like Superstring theory were thought to be on the verge of a break through, Hawkings was not alone to think this and other questions would be answered very soon.
It's perhaps not so wrong anyway, there are after all many "theories" about what this mass may be made up of, just not many can be easily proved / disproved. Hence this experiment and/. topic!
The situation here quite the opposite to what you suggest, our understanding of gravity has proved that our understanding of the universe is missing something. Not the other way around as you suggest.
So either e!=mc^2 or we just don't quite know everything about everything out there.. I'd guess the latter.
I could not agree more! Damn it if what it takes to make sci-fi in general more appealling is to turn it into some junk like friends, no thank you!
I believe people like you and I are the majority though amoung sci-fi fans, sure every high school geek would love to see Tupol's butt but these show's are not meant for kids..
Bring on the Intelligent scripts, complex plots, interesting themes. That is why we are here!
Blah.. I love listening to Trekkies whine about Voyager and Enterprise, many of those same people probably will claim Babylon5 was a master stroke in quality acting and inteligent scripts!
Boo too you!
IMO, Enterprise has much potential, it has so far been very good (with only a few exception) and looks like it is only getting better!
The claims that Enterprise is going downhill showed clearly by the level of interest (ratings) is a joke, it is very clear that today's tv viewers and execs don't care much for scifi, hence the canning of the very good series Farscape, and even Futurama! That's a sad fact that us sci-fi lovers always have to deal with, of course it is only made worse by all the whiners who bitch and moan constantly!
ps. I also enjoyed Voyager, sure it was occasionally lame, but THIS IS SCI-FI! It's meant to be lame god-namnit!:)
HD noise is always going to be a bit of a problem, my solution that I plan to use on my setup box is a CF Card IDE reader, with a 1GB CF card!
No moving parts no noise, a little low on capacity but more than enough to hold the OS and the important things.. Most of the data will stream from my pc/server!
Only draw back is speed, they aren't the fastest things, apparantly newer readers / cards will do 5MB/sec though which sounds good enough.. A gig of ram could be easily installed to compensate for that.
History is the best indicator that we have to go by and one thing I believe can not be argued when looking at the history of the western world, is that education is directly proportional to prosperity.
Your claim that this increased intelligence is the problem flys in the face of the facts. For example, Iraq's WMD's (or more accuratly the chemical weapons they used to have) were not built and designed by smart arabs, no they were bought from (perhaps not so smart) Americans! Also the anthrax that was sent around the states after 9/11 came from not some third world chemical lab but American labs, and I am quite sure that if or when a dirty nuke is exploded in some unfortunate American city, then the radioactive material will most definatly have been obtained from some former Soviet state! It did not take a brilliant terrorist to put these together did it?
If you stop and look at the cause of the problem it is undeniable that extremism breeds from ignorance and poverty! For another historical perspective, look at the explosion of Anti-Sematism in Europe around and after the Great Depression, which as we all know gave rise to Hitler! Today the "global terrorism" we face breeds in the poverty sticken slums across the middle east, and in this case just like the Hitler case, people directly as a result of ignorance blame those who are prosperous! They blame America and Isreal!
(Yes there are many other contributing factors but I believe I summed up many of them!)
To somehow claim that terrorism or conflict is a natural state of humanity is to ignore the facts and try to deny the existence of the problem!
Bah, well unfortunatly the other 80% of the world doesnt have this option. I'd love to give my money to some poor bastards, but unfortunatly I will have to do this myself.
I remember 3 years ago when i finnally got around to replacing my old (1994) Epson LQ20 (or something). Anyway I replaced it with a Xerox salvaged from a soon to be rubbish tip! It prints 1ppm at 300dpi in HP LaserJet I mode but damn is it solid. I think this thing was made in the late 80's, apparantly Xerox doesnt even know they still exist! Never jam's and only occasionaly spits the dummy when you overload the memory, but heck when you print on average little more than 2 pages per month, it does just fine.:)
Back on topic, if you need quality today, well for my clients I only setup and recommend laser printers, oki / hp are good or brother for cheap and nasty, but the golden rule when you buy a printer is that the cost is 100% in the toner / ink cartridge, so you may pay $100 for that epson inkjet now, but after 2 years that $500 mid-range hp laser cost you a tenth of the epson's TCO!
Unfortunatly I was unable to find the article I was really thinking (it was regarding the positive economic costs of Kyoto on Australia) so I figured that Nature article was similar enough. I prefer not to think of anything like this in terms of single countries, I'm not convinced on their being an alter motive such as you described in the Kyoto negotiations, perhaps part of the motive is related to the different reduction levels agreed to, ie Europe will cut by 8% and the US only 7%?
But if you need some US based research on Kyoto, how about:
[quote]..in a statement signed by 2500 U.S. economists that includes the following passage:
"Sound economic analysis shows that there are policy options that would slow global warming without harming American living standards, and these measures may in fact improve U.S. productivity in the longer run." (source)
"The fact is Kyoto is designed to allow Europe an economic edge over the United States and provide an opportunity to paint Americans as greedy monsters."
Well that certainly shows where your comments really stem from.:) And I thought Anti-American's can be paranoid.
Kyoto is about setting global standards for the developed world, that's us the filthy rich ones! It's about tiny steps, this being the first one ideally to be followed by more significant ones in the future.
The worst thing about the anti-Kyoto crowd is their frequent use of bad economic evidence, in particular the argument that it will throw the economy into a recession! This is baseless scare-mongering, most recent evidence shows exactly the opposite!
Okay I hate defending M$ software, but when I tested RC2 I had to *manually* setup file and print services after install! Yes, everything is disabled by default!
Finally someone thinking "long term", the completle lack of foresight is what got the US into this situation in the first place! It is also what got the US into Afghanistan after 9/11 (where did the Taliban come from again?) and it is argueably what made a bunch of fanatics fly some Aeroplanes into the WTC on September 11!
America's ability to NOT think about the concequences of it's actions is why now (after all of this in Iraq) I *actuallY* fear terrorists.:(
