    hmmm... after further investigation it appears to not be sun's fault...

    The traceroute stops at Alternet - that's from my Demon ISDN & my ethernet connected box in telehouse.

    Must be a trans-atlantic thing or something...

    Just in case this is not a troll (not very likely IMHO):

    That's the whole point of Stable, it stays mostly the same, because it is Stable.

    If you want cutting edge, then get unstable where your ten a week sounds (even more) bloody stupid with the amount of package updates unstable gets in a week!

    If you want a good working system with (pretty much) whatever kernel you want, get Testing - most of the time this is far more up to date than Redhat.

    1) A "novice" user shouldn't be installing programs.
    That is a task for someone who is at least moderatly competent. In the same way as is changing the oil or spark plugs in your car.

    Also apt-get is much easier than install shield!

    2) My Mother does not have apache on her linux laptop. She has a set of tools which do almost everything she needs to do and not a lot else.
    I know this as I set it up to have only those things.
    PS. I do not use RedHat for precisely those reasons.

    or use webmin or linuxconf if you must.
    Although I do get your point and it annoys me too.

    4) You wouldn't beleive how many people have only saved their files to floppy, "because it's a letter, not a document".
    Yes someone actually said that to me.

    also it's not /home/foo , it's /home/OooH_that's_my_name! which is a subtle difference but an important one.

    just my take on it.

    You seriously think that the interface to this relational database file system would be simpler than a hierachical (sp?) filesystem?

    And then to find them again you'd use the very same "Hit Control-F and look for it" dialog with a few extras.

    In that case, download the 2.88 image and burn to a bootable CD. Boot from it.

    I Prefer to do it this way as it's much quicker too. Add the base.tgz + drivers and you can get a base system up and running in no time at all.

    That's how I installed on my laptop without a floppy drive.

    If they took the disk out of my laptop I would be pretty pissed, bye bye warranty.

    This bloody Sony takes about half an hour just to stick a RAM upgrade in it. (Including a very dodgy piece of plastic which I wouldn't want to pull on many times.)

    I don't even know where abouts the drive is in the casing.

    Not to mention, why the hell would you transfer illegal porn/software/etc. on a laptop? surely you would just email it?

    Anyway if they want my pr0n they will have to decrypt the pgpdisk volume first.

    Just a thought... why don't the planes lock the doors to the cabin during flight.

    That way no-one can actually take over the flying of the plane.

    If none of the crew, including the pilot, can physically open the door then a hijacker would have a difficult time making the pilot fly into a building.

    Simple - much more than changing every airport in the world.

    Have you used Debian lately?

    In KDE 2.2 there is something called package manager, (or similar) it's as pointy and clicky as you could ever want.

    There is also always Gnome-apt if you are a Gnome person.

    I will believe you if you can tell me how I can pick up my email, write a response, and have a quick peek at slashdot from the middle of a field, or the back of a car, with a pad of paper? There just isn't an irda port on an a4 pad. If you only want to take notes with the thing then get something with a keyboard, I went all the way through secondary(high) school and the 2 years of Uni i did with a Psion 3a. (My handwriting is so bad that there was no point in bothering with anything else.) Now I have a palm and it's great, lusting after a ipaq, but can't really justify it.

    Make buying anything from an unsolicited email illegal.

    We've tried making sending the stuff illegal - that didn't work at all.
    This way there is no way that spam could work.

    If major newspapers and television news showed stories on how the bill was passed making buying anything from spam illegal, then even someone elses AOL using grandmother would know that they shouldn't respond.

    That way the 1% who respond becomes 0% and eventually the fscking spammers die of starvation.

    Yes it's for windows (and not free) - but showshifter looks to be very much like the software you need.

    It does the Tivo thing too...

    I'm currently trying to scrape together a box to do the same - but I'm trying to find an off the shelf case that's small enough. Looks like I might have to make my own though.

    Staroffice is free - to anyone - business or not.

    He is not breaking the law and will not go to prison.

    Not to mention that in my opinon Staroffice is far better than MS Office.

    There was a quote flying about a while ago "Linux is only free if you don't value your time."
    (I'm sorry I don't remember who said it.)

    This has to be the greatest point, a relatively clueless person could set up a NT server to do file and print sharing (I know I've seen it done) in an hour or less, and this server could do a reasonable job.

    The fact that a Linux/*BSD box could do a much better job is really beside the point for many people - because they would have to learn how to use a UNIX system or hire someone who does, that's your difference in cost nullified.

    There are a lot of arguments against "point and click" server management, but if we want Linux to replace NT then I think that it's needed.

    I'm not sure if this is really relevant - but (once you've got linux/***bsd running on old hardware it seems to make sense to run them as Xterms.

    I've been involved in a project where we are using a number of low end pentium's without much ram as Xterms to a more powerful machine with a bucketload of ram running StarOffice and displaying on each of these old machines.

    It seems to work well at the moment, we are still in the testing stage, but it looks like the management of the machines will be much easier than the current Windows systems elsewhere in the school.

    As an aside, does anyone know of the best way of cloning the disks to other machines - they are all identical except for the size of the disks - will DD work? or will the disk geometry screw it up?
    (I don't mind taking all the disks out and putting them in one machine one at a time if that's the easiest.)

    There is loads of programs for the Palm which allow you to take notes in image format, you just really need one of those. I use one called Handwrite3 which lets me take notes quicker than I can grafiti.

    But what you really need is a bigger screen, Imagine a palmOS based webpad with an A5 or A4 sized screen, Perfect.

    Has anyone actually used Mosix?

    What's the difference between a beowolf cluster and a Mosix one?

    To me Mosix looks better suited to those of us who have more workstations than they can use at once, as software doesn't have to be written specially to use it.

    How about using the machines as that?
