personally, I'd rather not see excess money spent on Micro$$oft Vi$ta. (notice my emphasis on $$$?). The DOT doesn't need Office 2007 Plus Ultra Deluxe to print worksheets. Nor is there really any advantage buying new computers to run Vista Aero, just to be "up to date".
They've definitely moved away from the electronic-component store to a much more consumer electronics store. I still go there to get basic soldering supplies, fuses and the occasional coax connector and to their credit they carry a few basic components, but few and far between. However, it seems the only way to get most electronic components from them is through their website. I've switched to a local electronic supply company for most of the electronic components I need.
Some of the papers being described can be found PDF on web page of Kathrin Bringmann (one of the two authors):http://www.math.wisc.edu/~bringman/. While it doesn't include the very latest, it includes some from last year on the topic.
The internet is essentially one giant stadium, and computers are the toilets in this stadium. When all the toilets go flush! at the same time, the sewage pipes inside the stadium walls cant handle it, and so they burst.
There already exists a distributed, open source engine which has been around a while, which is called Majestic 12. It uses a client-based search engine, which crawls the web for hundreds of millions of URLS, and then sends the data back to central servers. The servers than compile the data and use user-based searching algorithms to perform the search. While the algorithms are still very much in alpha, it is still a very noteworthy project. Also, its URL base is currently around 30-35 Billion URLs.
will have its great people and bad apples. I haven't lost hope in Google in terms of being a fairly morally-conscious company, but I do realize in such a massive company there'll be people (like the Gootube staff member who deleted this dudes vids) who don't match the same level of morality (in this case, for freedom of speech).
While there is Google playing up to China, and other such "evil" things, Google in my book is much better than Yahoo or other companies in terms of policy. This situation it was one lowly Gootube staff reviewer, not a company-wide policy that messed up. Yahoo made it policy to hunt down and hand over dissenter idenities to China.
While this may be one sided of me, I find the proprietization that Dell has dealt with is annoying not just to me, but to many independent computer repair people when things break (and especially when computers with recently-expired warranties break, ohhh lawrdy!)
While yes, proprietary hardware is a shrewd business tactic, and it brings in more revenue stream, it is quite contrary to the hardware industry standard. It is one of the sole reasons I stay clear from dell hardware, and I am probably not the only techie to do so because of proprietization of the hardware.
is the agreement they were forced to sign. If you RTFA:
The three companies have agreed to only advertise through companies that provide to consumers full disclosure of the name of the applicable adware program and any bundled software, brand each advertisement with a prominent and easily identifiable brand name or icon and fully describe the adware and obtain consumer consent to both download and run the adware.
Advertising companies must make it practicable for consumers to remove the adware from their computers, obtain consent to continue serving ads to legacy users and require their affiliates to meet all of these same requirements.
The agreements also require Priceline, Travelocity, and Cingular to engage in due diligence with respect to selecting and utilizing adware providers. Prior to contracting with a company to deliver their ads, and quarterly thereafter, the companies must investigate how their online ads are delivered.
The companies must immediately cease using adware programs that violate the settlement agreements or their own adware policies.

Oh, I hope they're not nearly as murderous as their cousin, Killer Tomatoes
The paper being described in TFA can be found Here. Also, there are almost a dozen different citations of the paper on Google Scholar

A year ago one of the Slashdot editors addressed Roland's submissions. Quite the Haterade, dude.

it is the solereason I steer clear of dell hardware if I can help it.

I figure this would be more of a downgrade in size, rather than an upgrade. Same trippy thing happening with processors, too!
they only had a few submissions. I guess news spreads quickly beyond Slashdot. :)
