Some of the issues with the above quoted article: 1) teachers don't get OT Fire fighters and others do. 2) That figure shows the number because teachers get more time off - they don't make the schedule, schools do, look at yearly average salaries, they aren't terribly overpaid. the 43200/52/40 gives a little over $20 an hour, not exorbitant.
The whole trouble I've had with outsourcing since the factory jobs in the 80's has been this. The US exports it's technology to a 3rd world country, which dumbs the tasks down enough that 2 people at 1/10 the wage of an american worker can do the same job as the american worker. Then people say well up American productivity. We do but the corporations just export the tech so it ups everyone's productivity, it's a no-win for the american worker. (exchange american in the above with European, or Japanese, for a more world centric point of view).
This is the same game the wealthy have played in real life for thousands (at least) of years. This puts the same type of game available to the not wealthy (or born to the right parents). There is no solution, it is a condition of humanity. It makes us US.
Indeed. Ever notice that the US terror level has NEVER gone below the midpoint since its inception? Any bets on to when it may?

What do lawyers have to do with patents? Isn't the test supposed to be with someone in the field that the patent applies to? Lawyers just add cost to almost everything we touch, don't encouragethem.
Because the ego (or ID) of the human species wouldn't let us accept not going on as a species. That's why we continued to this pointas a species, it's in our genes to continue on.
Oblivion jumps into the game and quests much better than Morrowind did. At least for me, it grabbed my attention much better and puts you in the game, wanting to play. One thing to remember there are hundreds (thousands?) of side and mini quests int he game, the main story doesnt stretch all the game can do.
One problem with your theory, we export our technology too. Any gains we make are tempoarary because they have a limitless supply of people. Now, if we kept out tech advantage, then your reasoning might hold up.
Foreign-based companies may own and operate in America more and more, but more and more the wealth of America is invested in foreign-based companies because that is where the growth is. So who owns who?
Well, in the case of these ports, a foreign governamet owns the company, the UAE, not a company based in a foriegn country. So, i'd say, they own us... pwned
Ever go by a cop at 70mph in a 65mph zone and not get pulled over? Judges, cops, DA's ignore laws all the time. They shouldn't be prosecuting this person.
a day late...
When we (Regan) responded to trerrorism by attacking Libya it stopped all terroroism? A measured response is good, even Regan and didn't create an atmosphere of fear and distrust within the US by responding to terrorists abroad. That's my biggest problem now, I agree with responding and stopping terrorism, using fear and paranoi within the US to respond is very bad.
First, let's get this clear.. We are NOT at war. Period, end of sentence. There has always been people that want to cause damage to the US government. Are we at war with Oklohoma because an American bombed a US Government building? Did we start wars because the WTC was bombed in 1992 (maybe 93, sue me if it's wrong). Did the US President at the time use it as an excuse to start a fear campaign across the US and drag us into further conflicts? Or perhaps he said we were at "war" with the terrrorists and used it as an excuse to erode our civil Liberties? No, he didn't, are you sure? The people that can be labelled as traitors are the ones that are will to use the constitution to wipe their asses with, like our current regime.
To answer your last point, there is a special court, perhaps you've heard of it by now, the FISA court. It is especially designed to handle survelance requests in a completely secure manner, even to the point of getting warrants after the fact of survelance. Our country is built on freedom, if we dont have it, the great promise our country once had, slowly goes into nothingness, we become a historical footnote of failed ideals. I love my country, the United States of America, I don't want people like you to destroy it.
For the 10,000 responses that say well if it was hotter at 800AD then we must be okay. umm, the article says "we could measue back about 1200 years ago, they arent claiming it was hotter at 800AD just that they couldn't measure it.
And the rest of you... Most of you said in earlier articles 150 years of data wasnt enough, sooo here is 1200 years, apparently that's not enough. Let's go with the theory that the coooler temperatures of the last 1200 years (even the ice age)have been good for the spread of humanity. Since we dont know if hotter temps will be, it makes sense for us to want them cooler.
SO we get more facts, but less reasoning. That isnt a good trade off, we need both. Perhaps schools should be all year around now, to learn he hard photsynthesis stuff.
"Perhaps life is more complex nowadays? I don't think a person living 100 years ago needed to learn even a tenth of what people need to learn today just to get by"
They had to know things like, oh if i don't farm and put food away fo rthe winter I will starve. Or maybe, if i get lost i will probably die, so i need to know the lay of the land if i go somewhere. Not important stuff, much less complicated than todays how do i hook up the TV. Mapquest isn't working, what other map sites are there for our paved roads to everywhere, I hope I dont need AAA.
It's very ignorant to say we need to know more now, we need to kow much less now than we used to.
Would a police state allow organizations like the ACLU to exist?
The answer is YES! Let ineffectual orginizations (that most americans think are terrible for defending civil liberties) file lawsuits and make noise, the powers that be can ignore it, while continueing to run their police state opertions.
I disagree strongly with this. It takes the one genius to really push humanity, the million really smart guys that come after can figure out all the uses of the ideas that the one world shattering genius put forth. I am not of those genius's by any stretch, but think it's folly to say 100 of Einstein's peers or even a thousand could have come up with the notions he did, but they sure helped him work out the details, and did the supporting work necessary for the proof.
I, for one, don't care if they want to. This is about my country, my democracy (I know not a true democaracy, blah blah blah). If they want to sell products that ensure no cheating in elections, people need to KNOW, not assume, KNOW, that it is a system beyond reproach. It's about my democracy not some stupid companies profits.
besides the speaking part, would the average person from 2500 BC have much of a different life in 1200 AD?? That 3700 years apart. The last two hundred years have been exceptional in humanities history, it's not logical to think that technological and societal progression will continue on the same curve as they have been for the last 200 years.

The real reason for Gonzales and Rove resigning is....
So Bush can PARDON them while he is still in office. This gives enough time for any major charges to be brought before the end of Bush's presidency.

Of course it is, the right to be secure in papers and possessions, doesnt say unless that information is gathered by a commercial enterprise.

Any recommendations where one can still live free and unobserved in a non-nanny state?"
Well, there's alway Luna. Set up a nice colony, far enough away and hard enough to get a lot of troops to that you could live in freedom.
