  1. Re:How to get into 3D? on Pixar Releases Free Version of RenderMan · · Score: 2

Don't pay money for a course -- Youtube has TONS of tutorials and learning videos people do. During a stint of unemployment, I self-taught Maya this way. I am a programmer by paycheck, but I have a large interest in the 3D rendering world. It's a lot to learn (new concepts / terminology),but it's very enjoyable IMO.

At least when I used it, Maya did not use any CUDA cores, and the GPU didn't really matter as long as it had openGL. (At one point I was doing 3D modeling on my netbook). I am not familiar with 3D printing, so I can't answer those questions.

Very interesting! I've been typing DVORAK for about 5 years now.

It took me a long time to get back up to my old QWERTY speed (about 80 WPM) -- at least two or three years, so during that time I was around 45-50 WPM in both. What sucked for me learning DVORAK was that afterwards, I had to go back and 're-familiarize' myself with QWERTY.

You can set a shortcut in Windows to switch keyboard layouts, I usually set Ctrl+Shift. I also usually set Windows to be set per-application for layout, as some applications are completely geared towards the QWERTY layout (Photoshop).

Okay - but how would bitcoin handle debt and interest? -- also, I read that a 3% inflation is a sign of a healthy economy, and someone else mentioned that deflation is harmful to an economy - so wouldn't bitcoin eventually stop being inflated because of the set # of bitcoins?

  4. I have a question on Bitcoin Mining Tests On 16 NVIDIA and AMD GPUs · · Score: 2

So as I've been reading on bitcoin for the last hour - I think I realized something that I have not heard really in the criticism of it yet.

So - a lot of people are thinking bitcoin will be REALLY huge in the future, so let's pretend it does get really huge - let's say it's the only currency that the entire world uses, for example. What would happen is... as soon as I do a single transaction with an individual, I would be able to use sophisticated software (just bear with me) to figure out their entire self-worth by looking at the database-thing, is that correct? Because you could see the entire bitcounts that have went to, and came from that address.

Wouldn't this be a single point of failure for bitcoin - because most people probably wouldn't want their entire self-worth being on display for the whole world to see.

    Any thoughts?

You know this is interesting - I recently got to my new job, lo and behold two monitors - unfortunately, both are a bit older LCDs, so even both combined don't equal the 1920x1200 rez of my one monitor at home, kinda funny I think. It is nice to have things split into two windows though.

Here's the thing - because I played the Medal of Honor beta, and after I just got into a multiplayer game and I realized I was a talliban shooting at coalition forces, I got a really sick feeling in my stomach and immediately stopped playing.
After just coming back from a deployment to Afghanistan (and one deployment to Iraq in 08), I lost a friend in afg and had several friends blown up by IEDs... I know it's just a game, and I know you might see it as 'bullshit protect the children' but really, I'm a gamer and I understand where you're coming from, but when you do a deployment for 7 months in the middle of nowhere surrounded by people who really don't like you, it's stressful, and the idea of playing a game as talliban shooting at US armed forces made me pretty sick.
I'm sure plenty of other Marines won't have a problem with this game - all my friends are huge gamers playing COD and whatnot, but I do think a few others would have problems with this.

  8. I'm a skeptic of 3D on 3D Displays May Be Hazardous To Young Children · · Score: 1

I don't have much experience with this new-fangled 3D stuff... but I went to watch Shrek 3-D the other weekend... and I walked out half-way through the movie to go play DDR at the arcade. I'm a big PC gamer, and I did think about going for Nvision with my new comp, good thing I waited for more positive reports about it. I'm not sure what was wrong with Shrek 3D, it probably didn't help I couldn't stand the movie, but I was totally non-impressed with the 3D effect. My eyes aren't that good and I wasn't wearing my glasses, probably could have had an affect on the experience, but whatever it was, it wasn't entertaining enough to keep me sitting down long enough to watch the whole thing. I'm thinking 3D might be more entertaining with PC games... you know, content that is actually interesting, but I'm definitely waiting... probably a long time.
