  1. Don't always rely on the internet. on How Do You Find Programming Superstars? · · Score: 2, Funny

Word of mouth is an incredible tool. If someone is well known in the industry and truly a superstar, people will know who they are. If you want someone like that, you need to realize you'll have to pay for them. I haven't personally "looked for a job" in a long time. I have found a niche for myself, so people look for me.

At my last two places of employment (previous was contract and I am now full time), I was found by someone who knew my reputation. By contrast, I had a recruiter call me who had gotten my name from another recruiter friend of his. He called me and told me how they were in desperate need of a senior person who would set standards, mentor teams, etc. I had a great time laughing at him when he told me that they were offering a solid 40K less than what I was making at the time.

I have several Vista machines. My primary home desktop is running Windows Vista Ultimate and it's smooth as silk:
    Pentium D 840+
    4GB ECC PC6400 DDR2
    Radeon HD 3870

Granted this is an excessive amount of hardware for most users (I'm a gamer), it is what I am used to and it runs great. Another Vista box I have is my Vista development box at work running Windows Vista Business. It's a Dell Optiplex 755:
    Core 2 Duo E6750
    4GB PC6400 DDR2
    Radeon X1300

Again, this system runs smooth as silk. If Vista is running sluggish, throw more RAM at it. It's cheap as dirt and it will really help Vista's performance.

Turn off UAC, enable the the run box on the start menu, set your page file to static min and max size, turn off any unnecessary services, and your system will be singing. The same was true when XP came out. The OS was more than most peoples' hardware could handle. It's the nature of Windows. I am surprised so many people are crying about it. Last time I checked it was status quo.

I have a 5, 3, and 11 month old. The 11 month old of course does not have the manual dexterity to play games yet, but my other two children enjoy it very much. They only play age-appropriate games. For instance, my 5yo plays Sonic games, puzzle games, Cars (the movie), Dora games, etc. My 3yo mostly plays games on his V-Smile (a learning system for kids), but there are a couple of games on Xbox Live Arcade that he plays as well.

I have been a gamer most of my life, I couldn't see it NOT being a part of my children's lives. I consider myself a pretty responsible parent when it comes to gaming. I don't even play M-Rated games in front of my children. When they are mature enough to understand what is going on, I will let them play those games. I can't stand playing M-Rated games against 12 year olds on Xbox Live. Even if they are mature enough to understand the game's content (which I highly doubt they are), it just bothers me.
