I've been looking into going back to school and have gotten a more in-depth look at the academic textbook market and I can conclude it is all a big racket. The price of textbooks is already outrageous as it is -- I don't doubt that they would love to DRM all of them and have students give them back afterwards. Even after looking into the used textbook market, I couldn't find a way to save very much and the price they'll give you for a used but still in very good condition book is almost insulting.
You would think we would want to make education more accessible and affordable for everyone, but between textbooks, student loans and other like scams it is a sad state of affairs.
I don't think I have ever witnessed so many examples of mental illness being presented by commenters in this article in one place. This is a truly extraordinary thread when it comes to showing how many truly mentally ill people post to Slashdot.
You are correct. My TiVo Series 4 is provided by my cable company and it searches across all sources of video whether it be broadcast, Netflix, Amazon, my cable company's own on-demand service, etc. I search for, say, a movie and it tells me it is available on Netflix but not Amazon, and lists prices (if applicable) and you choose the source you would prefer to watch from.
As far as the preferential searching goes, I have never seen that, but it's nice being presented with a list of sources where that specific movie is available from and the relative pricing (e.g. rent on Amazon or from cable-co on-demand, or 'free' on Netflix with subscription)
Seriously, there are 2-3 wireless networks around my apartment that are named something similar to this, probably by some people who still think this is surprising to others and/or funny.
I stopped using PayPal years ago. I had someone claim that they never received a laptop I sold to them via eBay, even though all parties had my UPS tracking information that shows exactly when it was delivered and the guys actual signature showing he signed for it!
Since then, I've sworn off PayPal and will relegate myself to missing out on little things. I've gotten by just fine without it. The sad thing is that most people will not care until something like what happened to me eventually happens to them.
There is a DMG within the download that you can restore to a DVD or flash drive and it works fine, yes. The recovery partition boots a minimal version of OS X in which you can restore Lion but you have to log in to your Apple account and download it which makes the recovery partition a lot less useful.
I have and use both and they both work perfectly for me with no issues. The only downside is that the Wii does not offer HD streams but that can also be a good thing depending on if you have a bandwidth cap. As far as I know, the Xbox 360 version of Netflix will not let you turn HD streams off if they are available.
Personally, I think this would be a pretty stupid move for Apple.
If something like this ever were to happen, count me out -- I would no longer buy any Apple laptops or desktops.
Wow, thanks for the tip -- I was waiting to install it as I didn't really have time lately to hack and play around with it but it installed and works great on my CDMA HTC Desire!
Where I live, I basically have two options for Internet service providers. The one I do not subscribe to is too slow to stream reliably, and costs about $110/mo. Their service is, however, uncapped.
Now, the ISP I do subscribe to has wildly varying bundles and tiers. When I signed up, I wanted unlimited transfers but the only way to to that is to bundle your cable Internet service with cable television. I pay $83/mo for cable television that I don't even use. Seriously, the DVR that came with the service has been sitting unplugged in my entertainment center for four months. My cable Internet service is $65/mo and I was extremely happy with it.
Up until about 5 months ago or so, a new transfer cap was imposed on ALL of their plans. I have the highest tier of service (22Mbps) and I am limited to a monthly transfer of 125GB. The only reason I bundled was because if you didn't the plans were hideously capped (we're talking like 3GB/mo).
The cable company, I'm sure, LOVES all of my free money. I stream our entertainment daily but I would like nothing more than to see some competition here so I can ditch my cable provider once and for all...
I use a Novatel MiFi device to provide Internet access to my iPad on the go. For $20/mo. I get unlimited data (within my state) and I have the ability to attach up to four more devices. I had rather go this route than tether my smartphone (tethering drains my battery pretty fast). The MiFi is tiny and fits in my iPad case, which is a huge plus. I would love 3G embedded into my device, but major carrier plans are ridiculously priced and limited at the moment (I'm looking at you, AT&T). If their pricing/cap structure ever changed, then I would consider a 3G-model tablet.
No kidding. Usually I want to see the source, so I have to read the comments and hope some helpful kindhearted soul took the time to find it and post it as a comment. (This almost always happens, however.)

That happened to me too during an upgrade. I went ahead and just factory restored the phone and added in my Exchange account again and it worked. Pretty annoying.
Samsung Knox is a step in that direction.

I wish I had modpoints for you two.
First came SlashBI, now comes Slashshot!
Yeah, you're right. I HATE having fun.
With 10,000 BTC stolen I'd be heading on over to Silk Road very quickly!
and I doubt the newer models are any better.
/facepalm
And this is why I no longer own a Playstation 3.
That's what I did. I sent them an e-mail to have mine cancelled now and have the funds in my wallet refunded.
Alone in the Dark for Xbox 360 does this. It has DVD-esque chapters and you can review what happened in the previous chapter before starting the next.

Then buy one from a local hardware store?

I enjoy stories about stupid crap that fails (e.g. Sony) so the Bitcoin stories are great.

Yeah, can you provide a link with more documentation explaining this handoff?
